Favorite patriotic song

With today being July 4th, I thought this would be appropriate: What is your favorite patriotic song? Mine is this one:

I'm normally not a country music fan, but this song can make the hair on the back of my neck stand up, especially when done by Lee Greenwood. Years ago, they had the BassMasters Classic three years in a row in Richmond Virginia ('88, '89, '90). We, along with another couple, went all three years. They had live entertainment before the final weigh-in on the last day, each year. Two of those three years (1st & 3rd yrs.), Lee Greenwood was the entertainment, and he sang this song. The Coliseum (or whatever bldg. it was), which was SRO, went wild with applause and appreciation. We're talking many thousands of people. You've heard of an audience raising the roof? You could also see many handkerchiefs being used. He brought tears to people's eyes both times he sang it. It's a pretty powerful song.
Enjoy your 4th! :flags-usa:

I agree with 100% on your song choice but I happen to like the studio version better than that particular live performance.

Also, Mox, I moved this to the music section thinking it's more appropriate and would likely see more traffic.

That particular live version wasn't my favorite either, but the live versions I saw in Richmond were fantastic. I searched you tube to see if either of those were there, but didn't find them. The second year there, they had BJ Thomas. He was ok, but didn't have the impact on the audience that Lee Greenwood had.

I like that song but it is over played and has lost appeal to me.

Nothing says patriotic like Sousa and my fav is:

Love the piccolo at the 2 minute mark.

For me I always like the National Anthem nothing more patriotic than this.

This non US citizen kills it wish would just sing it and not Diva it up.

Having grown up in a French-Canadian (actually Franco-Ontarian) school system, a "patriotic" song that resonates with me is Gilles Vigneault's "Mon Pays" - although in later years I came to associate it (perhaps wrongly) with the Quebec seperatist movement - of which I hold nothing but ill feelings.

During Canada's Centennial Year (1967) two very "patriotic" songs ended up leaving an indellible impression on me: "Ca-na-da" by Bobby Gimby, and "A Place to Stand, A Place to Grow" by Dolores Claman, The latter was written prior to the Centennial and is Ontario's unofficial anthem.

Which brings me to the question posed in the subject line of this thread: favourite patriotic song. Hands-down, bar-none, it is "The Hockey Theme" also written by Dolores Claman. Makes me shiver every time I hear it!

Would love to hear if my fellow Canucks agree - or not.

I could simply look this up, but I'll just ask instead:

Is that the song they play at the beginning of Hockey Night In Canada? If so, didn't they try to spruce it up or otherwise change it a few years back and there was a huge uproar to go back to the original song? Kind of like those of us in the USA and our attachment to Hank Williams, Jr and his song for Monday Night Football?

It is - and that is a good comparison (although "The Hockey Theme" has been around much much longer.)

However "Hockey Night in Canada" is "owned" by CBC (a public radio and television network). A few years back CBC lost the right to use "The Hockey Theme." The song plays instead on a rival's hockey broadcast. CBC launched a nation-wide competition for a replacement song for HNIC and to be brutally honest, the winner can't hold a candle to the original.

Me too. Every time I hear it, I just want to jam a hot poker in my ears.

Anyone remember during the 9/11 Memorial service when they played the Battle Hymn of the Republic at the end of the service? I balled like a little boy, especially with the Hallelujahs at the end.

The National Anthem is still probably my favorite as long as it's not Diva-ed up by some American Idol wannabe. I just like it sung traditionally. I like it when they get an opera singer to do it.
