Female Singers / Lead Vocalists / Musical artists

I've made no secret of the fact that for at least the last five years (at least) my musical focus (if I have one) has been on female artists (composers, vocalists, instrumentalists, performers, etc.) I could list hundreds and hundreds of them that have either come to my attention, caught my attention, or have always held my attention.

So I'm starting this thread with a request that it be pinned by the mods, and that folks add their own female favourites - especially new artists that we might not yet have heard of.

While I'm particularly susceptible to the female voice as that most beautiful instrument, the first paragraph shows that this is broader than that.

My next post will put one up that I just came across.

I know I'm likely at least a year late to this "discovery" but I heard Elle King for the first time today while I was swimming laps at my local pool. Even over that poor PA, with the noise of swimmers, and splashers, and everything else, her amazing voice cut through the din.

The song was 2014's "Ex's & Oh's" and after sampling a number of her other songs online, I can say that this is no one hit wonder!

Take Adele, and Amy Winehouse, and Serena Ryder, and ... you get my drift ... roll them all together and you get Elle King.

Just ordered a copy of her studio album Love Stuff.

My first response to this. She's a terrific singer, but even more a great song writer. Seen her live a couple of times.

All excellent folks!

For those who missed it in my CityFolk thread below, I has been recently blown away by new-on-the-scene Canadian duo Scarlet Jane. I have both of their albums (Stranger, and the eponymous Scarlet Jane). The former falls into the country/folk category while the latter moves them ever slightly towards pop. Regardless, this duo's beautiful vocal harmonization will leave you much more than impressed.

Given that they've yet to break out, and are Canadian, this will be a new discovery to my American friends. I urge you to check them out. Here's a sample.

I remember when I bought her CD back in 1995 off of the Canadian airplay of "Let It Rain" I thought, wow what a voice. She will go places. Sadly not so. I wonder how you heard her seeing as she is Canadian?

Our music collection is HUGE, Mike. Primarily because of Zing. He brings so much to my listening ear.

We have been fans of Amanda since the mid 90's as well. She is a powerhouse and I agree, for whatever reason she did not "go places."

A site search did not turn up any references to Irish musician Gemma Hayes so perhaps she will be new to most of you.

She's been around over ten years, but has only very recently come to my attention. My listening knowledge is limited to her most recent Bones + Longing (2104), but I intend to correct that by searching our her numerous previous albums and EPs.

Her voice has a wonderful melodic ethereal quality to it, and her songs (at least on Bones + Longing) are smooth pop/light rock/folk numbers. It's probably not a surprise that I detect a hint of both Enya and Sinead in some of her songs, but it's just a hint.
