Filling in the Collection

Gen has long had a certain penchant for certain types of jazz - big band, swing, etc. - from the '20s, '30s and '40s; and I must admit that I quite enjoy it as well. Anyhow, last year she asked me to get "some" for her.

I happened across a CD collection whose title certainly did more than just imply that it might be "it": The World's Greatest Jazz Collection.

It totals 500 CDs, broken down into the much more manageable 5 x 100 box sets for: Big Bands, Swing Time, Bebop, Classic Jazz, and Modern Jazz.

Now I don't claim that I will ever listen to all of it, or maybe even more than 25%, but so far I have found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable "sampling" of jazz. And now that I've finally got it all onto my server, hopefully Gen will as well.

And good grief, what a "swing" (har, I slay myself!) in prices; $200, $250, $400, and $1,600 for the "Swing Time"!

I acquired the entire collection in one swell foop. Cripes! Purchased individually they could run well over a grand! (Swing Time, for some reason, seems to be the priciest individual set.)

Score!!!!

One album that has been on my "get" list for ages is Skylark's Wildflower: A Golden Classics Edition.

Skylark was a Canadian band from the early '70s notable for two things: its hit called Wildflower, and that David Foster was a member of the band.

They released two albums: Skylark (1972) and 2 (1974) before disbanding. To my knowledge neither of those two albums were ever released on CD. However Wildflower: A Golden Classics Edition (1996) was - but saw only a very limited number produced and sold. I've been scouring used record store bins - without luck. The CD contains all of the first albums tracks, and two from the second one.

I'd been tracking it on Amazon.com, where used copies go for $30US and new copies from $130US, and Amazon.ca, where it's $93C and $331C respectively!

By freak chance I was going through my Amazon.ca wish list today and what do I see: a new copy for $0.50C plus $3.99C shipping! I almost broke a couple of nails working the keyboard to complete the sale before anyone else did.

I got a shipped notification a few hours later (it's coming from Illinois) and hopefully will be here within a week.

Definitely one of my better CD buying scores.

I had the very good fortune to see Canada's Stampeders twice live in concert: once at their peak at a major venue, and later, in a small hockey arena. They were then, and remain, one of my favourite Canadian rock groups.

But up until recently, all I had were a greatest hits vinyl album and CD. I've now got their entire discography.

Now I'm sure everyone has heard their biggest hit Hit The Road Jack, and perhaps Sweet City Woman and Monday Morning Choo Choo. But they have well over a hundred songs on more than ten albums, so there's lots of others to enjoy. More than just other hits like Minstrel Gypsy and Wild Eyes, they did great covers of New Orleans and I Heard It Through The Grapevine. I've been listening through most of their stuff today and, to be honest, I've not heard a dog yet.

Here's another one of their hits - in music video form.
