Finding the Funk, on Palladia

I debated about putting this in the "Television" thread, but its about the music.

Caught the beginning of this on Palladia, kind of a history of Funk. Really good so far; went thru the beginning with James Brown, then on to Bootsie and Larry Graham, and Sly (he hasn't aged well, couldn't understand half of what he said). I was also shocked to learn that Dayton OH was a huge geographic center for funk; I lived there from 83 to 87 and had no idea (I did audition with a band I really loved on the Oregon District, their keyboardist was incredible; it didn't take too long during the audition to realize I was in over my head, then I learn that the guy I was trying to replace was hired by... Maynard Ferguson!! ).
Just had a great bit about Bernie Worrell, played in Parliament and later the Talking Heads, numerous others. I will have to watch this again with pen in hand, start filling in the holes in my funk collection. Highly recommended. :music-rockout:

They finished up with good stories on Earth, Wind & Fire (one of my favorites) and Prince.
An interesting dichotomy: The grandfather, Mr. James Brown, always told his rhythm sections that he needed to hear "the ONE", the downbeat. By the time the torch got to Prince, he left out the One; the rhythm was carried by the twos thru fours.
This is fascinating to me, because there was one other band during funk's heyday that also mashed styles (in their case, rock and reggae/ska) and they also left out the One: the Police.
Two completely different forms of music, that both drive me at max. Wow!

Don't believe me? Just watch! :happy-smileygiantred:

Finding the Funk is the name of the show? I'm looking for it so I can record it.
