Pretty bummed about season two of Monarch on Apple TV+ it’s pretty awful. Story and characters all feel forced and/or random. Like they fed a bunch of Godzilla-ish key words onto AI and it spit out this storyline. Looking forward the some legit Godzilla when Minus Zero comes out in November.

We watched the first episode and it was very Kong focused. I haven’t drawn any conclusions about the season being awful or not though I found S1 pretty generic if I’m honest, so I’m not expecting too much from this. Don’t even get me started on the last couple movies, excluding “Minus One.” The series from Godzilla ‘14 to Godzilla V Kong has been like reliving going from Batman 89 to Batman & Robin.

I'll watch anything with Godzilla in it and/or pretty much any other large monsters... for example Colossal with Anne Hathaway which I really enjoyed. But this Monarch series and agreed the more recent American/Legendary movies are just not so great... also agreed especially in comparison to Minus One.

After the opening scene I fast forwarded through the rest of Monarch episode four then switched to Car Wow videos on the treadmill this morning. This season of Monarch is losing my interest rapidly.

Another teaser dropped today. Doesn't reveal a whole lot but I'm fine with that. Staking out my parking space at local IMX theater for 11/03 release.

Read some fan grumblings online over the fact that the opponent for Godzilla in Minus Zero will be King Ghidorah and not Hedorah as many had speculated. I feel quite the opposite. While Hedorah is probably my all time favorite Godzilla foe (and highly stylized associated film) the fact that Toho is going straight to King Ghidorah in this sequel is to me like an open rebuttal of the American Godzilla franchise... you think you guys can do King Ghidorah? Check this out. So in the same way that Toho (frankly) humbled the Legendary films with Minus One... they will now step right up and do it again with the same featured key villain character. It's a bold statement IMO and I am very much looking forward to it. I enjoy the Legendary films for what they are... but they have become something very different then what Toho started and has now brought back in spades.

It should be the biggest OG Toho Big G vs. Americanized Jurassic Park "Zilla" Raptor take down since Final Wars...

Yup. The only thing worse then the recent Legendary WWE style movies is the abysmal Monarch series. Both have become all but unwatchable. I will still go to the theater to see Legendary pics just for the big screen spectacle of it but content wise they are crap. And if Toho keeps making more Minus movies then I may never go back to a Legendary showing.

Minus Zero G minus one day so psyched for Tuesday night. And Thursday night. And Saturday morning. And Weds night next week. And as many more times as I can manage on the big screen if it's as good as people are saying.

Spoiler Free Initial Thoughts:

First Minus Zero IMAX viewing was great... especially since it was the early preview showing with a theater full of fellow die hard giddy Godzilla fans dressed to the nines showing off all our best vintage and new t-shirts, hoodies, tattoos, etc. My wife said she had trouble seeing which one was me in the crowd LOL. So that was fun in and of itself. The movie did not disappoint it was huge in scale and they "other" (not naming him in case anyone doesn't know already) monster was visually spectacular. The storyline and main characters were a nice continuation from the first Minus One movie. The only negative thing I can say is that the sequel maybe lacked some of the nostalgia and emotion of the first film since that one was such a long overdue/corrective return to greatness for the character and OG Toho studios after some less then authentic Hollywood monsterverse efforts. It felt like a nostalgic throwback and tribute to all of our fond childhood memories and fandom. Getting back to the roots of the genre. So seeing it happen again is amazing... just maybe has less of an impact the second time. But that's nitpicking for sure. The movie is excellent. Sound was good and properly loud right up there with recent IMAX Odyssey viewings. And bar none the best Kaiju modern CGI era monster fight on screen. A brutal fight that had the Godzilla junkie crowd gasping and roaring. And the post Hiroshima content escalated from metaphor to direct memories, flashbacks and even an unapologetic revenge fantasy sequence. This is how it became an R rated film and after seeing it this is understandable.

I am seeing it again this weekend then again with my son next week. Looking forward to catching some of the finer details I may have missed at first viewing. One of my favorite classic elements was the use of what I like to call nonsense tech. The crazy scientific and military contraptions and machines that are featured to try and solve the monster problems. This is such a classic element from the old films and it's great to see it here again featured so prominently. Big machines and glowing tubes and dials that do crazy things somewhat rooted in science but more science fiction.

Also there was a near riot at the concession stand to get the mega huge Godzilla popcorn bucket before they sold out. I got the second to last one and came close to fighting a couple in line behind me who were trying to cut the line LOL. I had to growl at them a little and hold my ground.
