Gotta Love Jaco......What a loss at age 35! RIP

A friend of a friend stopped by a month or so ago and he is a guitar player. He's switching over to the Bass, 'cause that is what the Band needs. So I asked him if he was familiar with Jaco?

He said "who"?

I sent him home with this...... :bow-blue:

He called a couple of days later and asked if he could borrow other "Jaco" recordings? He'll be here next weekend and I have a bunch of "Jaco" CD's set aside for him and one DVD. :handgestures-thumbup:

No one is like "Jaco"! :bow-blue:

I'd never heard of Jaco, but according to Wikipedia he played on Weather Report's "Black Market", which coincidentally is the only WR album I've got. So I'll have to put that on sometime and give it a listen.

Thought the above videoclip reminded me a little bit of the Electromagnets but with fancier bass? Granted, it's sort of that same genre so why wouldn't it.

In many cases, that would discourage anyone from trying to learn bass... :D

I saw Weather Report live with Jaco. A bit after Heavy Weather came out.

Great show.

I read a review once that said he at times he almost sounded like a horn player. I'd tend to agree.

If you're a Joni Mitchell fan at all, she has a very-well-recorded concert on DVD with Pat Metheny on guitar, Jaco, the late great Michael Brecker on horns, and others. One of my favorite concert disks ever, very highly recommended! :handgestures-thumbup:

EDIT: Oh yeah, there is a concert video out now of Weather Report, the Heavy Weather lineup. I had a bootleg disk from this show from Germany, but its now available to law-abiding citizens everywhere. My nurse-then-girlfriend watched it with me, and told me what kind of drug Wayne Shorter was on by how his eyes darted around (it was a bit freaky). :?

This is a great Joni Mitchel live DVD with Jaco, Pat and Lyle. It is a must see!

The drumer has some chops for sure, but I am conflicted because I thinking the level of technique the drumer is throwing at that piece is pulling from the bassist. Or at least making the whole thing REALLY complex. I think I might have stuck with a simpler beat structure and not be so fancy.
