Oh
YEAH!
The Score of my Life occurred in a
Musician's Friend store, the Nord Electro II:
It had just been released about six months prior, for over $2,000. The one in the MF was used, but immaculate, not a scratch on her, and their asking price?? $700!!!! My eyes bugged out, they clearly didn't know what they had. I ran thru every knob, button, and key, everything worked, wrapped my arm around it and flagged for a salesman, kicked a couple of snot-nosed kids in the teeth who wanted to try it, and took 'er home!
Nord is a Swedish company that builds unexpected, well-made, extremely lightweight, expensive and fantastic-sounding synths (I also own their Nord Lead I). The Electro was designed to simulate electro-mechanical keyboards: the Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, the Mighty Hammond B-3, Yamaha electric Stage Piano, and the Hohner Clavinet. The first tune I learned when I got her home was the Clav part on Withers' "Use Me Up".
Here's another great Clav tune from decades ago, that again I only recently found out who did it, the master Billy Preston:
