How many people make a rock band too big?

I mean, jeeze, even the most incredible live cover band in their minds, Firefall, did a version of it:

I can honestly say I have never heard any of those covers, only the original by Spirit.

However, I really kinda dug Healy's version.

I remember the song but then again I was 33 when that video was done.

And there were really only 4 guys in the band.

Randy California - Guitar, Vocals Mark Andes - Bass, Vocals Ed Cassidy - Percussion, Drums Jay Ferguson - Guitar, Vocals

I think that video was from a show where a bunch of other musicians joined them as is often done.

The New Pornographers have 8 members. That seems like a lot. Arcade Fire has a shit ton!! At least 8 I believe? Wonder how they split their income?

^^ Arcade Fire came to mind immediately but I think they have 6 core members and then live, round things out with more musicians that typically aren’t in the studio.

The same Jay Ferguson that did Thunder Island?
