Ice Drumming on Lake Baikal

It is real. I played some ice like that in Norway when I was in college as part of a performance art piece. They don't sound that good from a distance - for the video the microphones were most likely placed very close to the ice sheet. It is just another solid flat sheet, like steel or wood, vibrating. Because of how cold it is, the ice retains form whilst vibrating, but they also break if you try to play loudly.

So, yes, the audio was doctored through close mic placement and clearly they edited it together to ensure a somewhat constant beat. But the general idea is real.
