Interesting article on A/V receivers - and preout question

Re: Interesting article on A/V receivers - and preout questi

I have an Onkyo TX-SR805 receiver paired with a Marantz MM9000 amplifier. I drive my center and surrounds off the receiver and my mains off the amp. I kept the receiver's gain controlls at zero for the mains and used the gain controls on the amp to adjust the levels. I then tuned the levels of the rest of the speakers to match the mains. Believe it or not, I got a lower noise floor from my mains by doing this than I had running everything off the receiver. I also got more headroom than I had running everything off the amp alone. When I want to listen to stereo music, I get the improved noise floor. When I want to crank up a movie, I get the additional headroom. It seems to be the best of both worlds, at least as long as I have this receiver and amp.
