Looking for a mini receiver for bedroom

If you can hook up another source besides the Zune, look into something like the Squeezebox, Sonos, or similar that can play lossless files. The only downside is loading all your music onto a computer for the source to connect to and stream to the Yamaha. If the Yamaha has a USB port, than maybe you could get by with a USB hard drive for your tunes. Either way would eliminate lugging a bunch of CDs around.

thanks for the suggestion. i imagined someone would chime in with a slick solution like this. but honestly for now i'd rather carry a few CD's than rip all those CD's again. i've done it twice in the last 5-7 years: first at 192 and then again at 320. and there are about 600 of them . . .ugh. i know, i don't have to do all of them. i just don't have any more will for ripping, or even the hard drive space frankly. but i don't mean to be ungrateful, so thanks again for the suggestion. i imagine there will be a point in the next few years i actually do go though an effort like this.

and for the record, Zune does WMA. that's lossless, right?

There's WMA and then there's WMA Lossless. I'm going to guess that the Zune just does high quality "lossy" WMA (320 kbps) files. One way to find out is to rip a CD, or a track from a CD, to WMA Lossless using Windows Media Player on your computer. If the Zune plays it, then your golden. The only negative is lossless files will take up more space on your Zune than a lossy file will.

Ripping can be a tedious pain. I agree with you on that. I have about 1500 CDs and only have about 600 of them ripped. I just haven't been as diligent as I once was, but I just keep telling myself it will get done whether it's tomorrow or 10 years from now. LOL! Usually whenever I get a new CD or grab one I know hasn't been ripped to my HDD, I'll try to go ahead and do it then. A CD here and there is not going to be as fast as dedicating a large amount of time for your whole collection, but you'll be surprised how much of your collection you'll get done. Hope this helps. :music-listening:

The Zune is no longer available. The Zune software running on a Windows Phone will do WMA Lossless if you put that format on the phone's storage.

Brian,

Got to looking around Amazon and came across this. As soon as I saw it, it reminded me of your thread here. Here's the link

The line out could be used for your powered speakers and if you wanted to add a CD player, you still have the input for that. I saw where BBC and NPR was also one of the stations that's available, so maybe this could work with the speakers you want to use?

I'm looking at this for myself for an upstairs setup and/or my back porch for the summers.....

So, just to clarify: Zune does run WMA Lossless now, and I just couldn't resist the temptation so I started re-ripping all the CD's I listen to most often. Having very little will power I ended up filling the whole 80gb in no time and still have a ton more records that 'deserve' the lossless status. It's funny, when deciding which records to re-rip, I quickly changed my mindset from choosing the ones I currently listen to most, to judging which albums are worthy of the lossless format. Sure, I rarely listen to The Beatles or The Talking Heads these days, but it seems insulting to relegate them to the MP3 category with the likes of Mastodon & The Cult.

Anyway, as usual I chose not to choose and just bought a 2nd Zune 80gb on c-list. So that's like another 250 albums I get to convert to lossless - whoohoo! [face palm]

^^^

Another thing you can do, is use a dedicated external hard drive for your lossless files. Then, just "rotate" the songs you want on your Zune.
