Woo-hoo! Got tickets to see Neko Case here in Baltimore in July (actually the day before Bat's GTG starts). She's one of my favorite female vocalists. Should be fun! It's at a smaller club/bar type setting as opposed to a large hall, and tickets weren't too expensive.

If you haven't heard of her, I highly recommend this album, her most recent:

She also sings with The New Pornographers, this is a great one too:

Small venue's are the way to go these days vs. the large arena type shows.

It's a way's off, however have a blast!!

Love me some Neko Case. Love the New Pornographers even more!!!

Have fun Pauly!!!

Although I purchased those two CDs based on your recommendation, I haven't really had a chance to give them or her a good listen...that will change though when I begin working out of the other work truck, because I have a better iPod interface in that vehicle...

Glad you were able to score tix! Have a great time !!

TONIGHT! Very excited. Wish I could take pictures, but the venue doesn't allow it. Oh well, guess it'll be good to just listen to the music without worrying about photography at the same time.

Just getting back, great concert! She's such an artist, her music is very interesting and I just love her voice, many shades and dynamics and such control. She was fun onstage, pretty much acts - and dresses - like any "normal" person, not trying to be a rock star or anything. The venue was a local music bar, a good size stage with many levels of walkways and actually many bars around in different locations. (I had one beer and decided at $7 a glass that one was enough!) No seating, just standing general admission; it was pretty packed (maybe 300-400 people total? I'm not really sure it was hard to estimate), and we ended up being in a good spot, I thought, at stage right just a few feet from the stage, which you wouldn't think would have very good sound but actually we were close to the side stage monitor, so we could hear everything quite clearly without it being overly loud. I could hear the nuance in the vocals, which was the big reason I wanted to go to this show. And I was close enough to be able to watch the performers, I was maybe 20-25' from Neko, 15' from her bassist and 10' from her backup vocalist (who was also the pre-show soloist, very good too).

So in all it was a good time, well worth it. Very different experience from my last non-classical show - Joe B. Her band was not quite as tight and polished as Joe's, but they were all very talented, and I believe the drummer and lead guitarist were members of the New Pornographers, I'll have to look it up. She also had a bassist (electric and upright), backup vocalist, and an interesting fellow with wild gray hair who played guitar/banjo/pedal steel. A good mixture, definitely not mainstream pop/rock stuff. She played a lot of music from Middle Cyclone, and a bunch of other stuff from her earlier albums and even a few from a new album she says is coming out "soon." Probably onstage for ~1.5 hours, maybe a little more.

I even got to interact a tiny bit with Neko; at one point kinda early on she was switching guitars and tuning and the audience was dead quiet, and she kinda jokingly said "y'know you guys can talk if you want." Well it happened again a few songs later, and I yelled out into the quiet "can we talk now?" and they laughed. My 1.5 seconds of fame.

Interesting, just found out (on wikipedia) that Neko was born just about a month after I was!

Listening now to Neko's new album, called (lengthily) "The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You."

I really like this album a lot. Very interesting music, some unusual and creative instrumental arrangements - or lack thereof, one song being a cappella. Great SQ. It's a little calmer, a bit more "heady" than her previous albums, IMHO. Shows great creativity, and willingness to do her own thing. She definitely has her own style, both vocally and in songwriting.

Highly recommended, especially if you're already a Neko fan.

Cool cover art, too.

Going to see Neko again tonight, same venue as before. Should be fun!

Dude, you really suck!!!!!!!!!

Have a blast!!

Good concert! Neko was in great form, actually a lot better than she was when we saw her last year, I think. Good mix of old and new songs. She even did the solo a capella song from her latest album, which was kind of a ballsy thing to do live, I thought. Wife and I both enjoyed it; kids wanted to go but it's in a bar/club type setting, and standing room only, not kid friendly.

That solo piece gave me goosebumps--it was really cool. Really enjoyed ourselves. Sad to say, it's probably the first date Paul and I have had in a very long time! Our kids are staying overnight at our friends' too, so no kids to worry about tonight! :D

On a related note...I see that The New Pornographers' next release, Brill Bruisers, is slated for August 29th. I assume that Neko Case was in studio for it.

Ah cool, I didn't know that, thanks! I haven't heard whether she's on this album, but I would assume so...
