Not so good news out of Canada - Gord Downie terminal cancer

I knew there was a reason why I have always admired Eddie Vedder!! First it was his work for Neil Young's Bridge School and now this. A class act!!

Finally got around to watching the DVD Jeff kindly sent me of this concert. Enjoyed it! Now I admit, I'm totally unfamiliar with this band, so I don't have 30 years' perspective on them, nor do I (obviously) have the Canadian connection. So I'm completely unfit to offer much of an opinion here. But I liked their music, and I thought their instrumentalists - especially the bassist, who for whatever reason struck me particularly - were excellent. SQ was quite good, given that this was Jeff's home-grown burn of a live broadcast. No problem there. And Downie is ... how to say ... quite a character! Granted I couldn't understand nearly a word that he was singing. But y'all know I rarely pay much attention to lyrics anyway ;) so (to me only) no big deal there.

Anyway, thanks Jeff, I appreciate the "cultural exchange" here!

You are most welcome Paul.

You taught me that American bourbon is good (sometimes) for drinking, and not just cleaning used paint brushes; and you've now experienced The Hip.

Jeff

ps. The thing about that concert, taken in isolation, is that the gorilla is always in the room. It's evident in Gord's singing, nay screaming in frustration. I cannot ever recall such a concert performance where the lead, the centre, the frontman knows that it will be his last performance, as does everyone else, because he is dying. Pretty powerful stuff.

I am hoping that a legal release of this comes out which I can watch. I have loved this band since the early days when they were compared to REM in the press.

Jeff - If you recall, Warren Zevon was the only guest on Dave Letterman for his last performance after being diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. It was one of the most emotional television experiences of my life.

Flint, I did not know that. I just saw some YouTube clips of that show. Very moving.

Watching now! I am also unfamiliar with them. Enjoying it so far.

Thanks for the disc Mr. Mack wood!
