Panasonic to Drop TV's

To bad, the GT30 I have is great. Surprised with the decrease in demand for Plasma. It has to be across the market and not a Panny issue.

It doesn't help when stores have example: 15 sets on display....12 of 'em are LCD's just lighing-up the store.
Wished I had the bucks to be ready to get a Panny VT50....55" would be fine for me

It had recently been announced that Panasonic and Sony were teaming a joint venture in OLED displays. I wonder if this news will have any effect on that project...

Most people in a flat panel purchasing position have little or no knowledge. Therefore they rely on their eyes (read bright is better) and the salesman/woman to make their choice. They walk into an outlet like Best Try, see all the panels hanging on the wall and pick the brightest one that's the least money.

That sucks. First Pioneer, now Panasonic and I'm not really happy about plasmas ending in 2015 if that's true. Two things I liked about plasma was no refresh rate or dead pixel issues like you could have with LCD.

Looks like Samsung has the market for mid/ high end plasmas.

That is until they drop out. (Cynical curmudgeon prophecy)

The article says they are dropping LCD panels. Are they going to drop Plasma as well??

- Japan's Panasonic Corp will cut production of LCD and plasma panels for televisions in 2013 as sales continue to remain below expectations, the Nikkei said.

I tend to think a new display technology is about to drop.

I think I read somewhere that Sony is developing something. The Japan folks waited too long to even begin re-tooling etc for the flat panel display market (China & Korea have been RD'ing/building/re-tooling for flat panel displays for sometime & have invested alot of bucks). These countrys are already trying to develop cheaper OLEDs & like Rope stated, may be working on the "next" tech.
I've also heard that China & Korea are getting alittle scared..........Viet Nam and/or Thailand may be the next "China" ...cheaper workforce.

This month's Home Theater had a blurb in their "This Just In..." section that Sony and Panasonic have indeed comfirmed their plans to release OLED sets very soon.
Another interesting blurb: broadcasting of 3D content appears to be shrinking, rapidly. :geek:

Picking a nit here, but does "cut" = "drop completely" or "reduce"? The way article is worded, it's really hard to tell.

Was bound to happen, as LCD sets get faster and faster response times as well as better blacks plasma will be forgotten. They are heavier, and while most know better there is still the "burn in" stigma.

Walk into any WorstBuy or the such and they will begin to tell you how LED is "top of the line" which is still an LCD set. lol.

I have a Panasonic plasma 50 inches several years old. Was thinking with the eyes starting to weaken that a 60 inch might be desirable from where I hang out in the so-called great room. Nothing imminent but perhaps I should start looking for one now.

Anyone jumped on the 3d bandwagon? I was thinking of sitting this one out and just watching the occasional 3d movie. I seem to recall somewhere that only the high-end models were worth owning. Not much on video as my old Panasonic plasma has been perfectly satisfactory to me. Nothing wrong with my ears and music is still my main pleasure.
