I'm not sure if it's player dependent (mine is Sony BDP-S570) but lately I've been able to skip right to the main menu by pressing "top menu" button as soon as the disc loading finishes. If I miss it by a second or two, it plays all the crap, in which case I just open the disc tray, close it and retry it. Anyone else done this?
 
I've have noticed that some discs will go to the top menu and others don't, but I never thought that I had anything to do with timing. Interesting.
