What's people's issues with Phil?
I think you could probably write a dissertation on that!
I was an active member of Craig Anderton's internet musician forum back in 2001, and a thread popped up titled "OMG, turn on your TV!" one day. It was the September 11th attacks. The internet got completely swamped, and I didn't really know what was going on, but knew it was serious when it took almost two hours to get back on base after lunch (in retrospect I wish I'd taken leave and watched TV the rest of the day).
Anyway, this musician's forum then exploded into different opinions, about muslims, christians, imperialism, hegemony, on and on. Some serious arguments, debates, even threats broke out; one guy posted a threat against Bush that ended up getting him a visit from the FBI! Things got so ugly that eventually a separate "Political" section was added to the forum, not unlike here at AA.
Okay, I'm still on the story here. One day one musician got tired of the political ranting, and posted a thread called "Phil Collins Sucks!" and he kiddingly complained about how Phil "sold out" Genesis with his more pop-oriented direction. Well, many people piled on to this discussion, and I think things got artificially inflated just because everyone was tired of the terrorist discussions. The electronics haters complained about Phil's use of basic drum machines on Genesis recordings; the "studio gloss" haters complained about Phil's "gated reverb" snare sound, which became as over-used in that time's pop music as the Yamaha DX-7 "rhodes" sound; and a lot of "purist" musicians hated Phil for, again, selling out and going pop (and making a buttload of money).
Anyway, Tom, that's how I thought things happened, and it changed Phil's/Genesis' legacy forever; someone really
could do a Master's dissertation on how it all happened. :ugeek:
