Phil Collins suggests a possible Genesis reunion

Flint

Prodigal Son
Superstar
That is, he is considering a reunion of the 3rd version of Genesis with Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford.

I would love to see that happen! Genesis was an amazing band and didn't deserve the lack of respect their amazing talent and creativity deserved. Their popularity made them seem like toss-out pop, but the music, talent, and writing was amazing.

I would love that! You're right, Phil Collins gets nothing but derision on musician forums, but they were unique.
Didn't he come close to suicide a few years ago?

I'd like to see them get back together. Phil Collins may not get much respect but he has a VERY good catalog of work. When he was with Genesis the whole thing just worked very well.

I'd love to see what they'd do together now. I'm sure they have at least one more epic album in them.

Not even sure. As near as I can figure out, he's seen as the light rock ("yacht rock") type of guy who is past his prime.

I think you could probably write a dissertation on that!
I was an active member of Craig Anderton's internet musician forum back in 2001, and a thread popped up titled "OMG, turn on your TV!" one day. It was the September 11th attacks. The internet got completely swamped, and I didn't really know what was going on, but knew it was serious when it took almost two hours to get back on base after lunch (in retrospect I wish I'd taken leave and watched TV the rest of the day).
Anyway, this musician's forum then exploded into different opinions, about muslims, christians, imperialism, hegemony, on and on. Some serious arguments, debates, even threats broke out; one guy posted a threat against Bush that ended up getting him a visit from the FBI! Things got so ugly that eventually a separate "Political" section was added to the forum, not unlike here at AA.
Okay, I'm still on the story here. One day one musician got tired of the political ranting, and posted a thread called "Phil Collins Sucks!" and he kiddingly complained about how Phil "sold out" Genesis with his more pop-oriented direction. Well, many people piled on to this discussion, and I think things got artificially inflated just because everyone was tired of the terrorist discussions. The electronics haters complained about Phil's use of basic drum machines on Genesis recordings; the "studio gloss" haters complained about Phil's "gated reverb" snare sound, which became as over-used in that time's pop music as the Yamaha DX-7 "rhodes" sound; and a lot of "purist" musicians hated Phil for, again, selling out and going pop (and making a buttload of money).

Anyway, Tom, that's how I thought things happened, and it changed Phil's/Genesis' legacy forever; someone really could do a Master's dissertation on how it all happened. :ugeek:

I guess I don't understand why "selling out" is such a problem to so many. Is pop music such a terrible thing?

And I don't understand why an artist that produces something you don't like makes that artist a hack.

Oh well... Some people aren't happy unless they have something to be upset about.

I think it's jealousy. "How come HE got the big contract?!? My songs are better!" Human nature, especially when Your product "lost out"…

Some folks just throw a fit when a musician makes money through music, not through local distribution of pizza to the end user.

To me Genesis ceased to exist after Gabriels exit he was Genesis. Not to say that what was left after the aftermath wasnt good just they should have changed the name. Collins Rutherford Banks Hacket Band or something like that. I have read the Phil didn't want to lead up the band after Peter left. They auditioned 400 hundred singers to do the Vocals on Trick of The Tail. A chap by the name of Strickland almost got the gig but all the background and instruments had already been completed in the studio just waiting for the lead and he turned it down because he didnt like the key in which it was to be recorded. So Phil did the vocals and the rest is history. I like a lot of there albums going forward from Peter but for me just was never the same. I simply hated "No Reply At All, Follow You Follow Me, Home By The Sea and I Can't Dance."

Me, I would love to see a Collins, Banks, Rutherford, Phillips and Gabriel combo. It wouldn't last long, but one can dream, can't one?

Jeff

ps. Thanks for the thread Flint. Reminded me of a few holes in my Genesis collection - which I've just taken steps to fill.

ps. Does anybody else own the original vinyl Genesis EP Spot the Pigeon? I don't think it was ever released in the US - although the three tracks were later released on a some compilation CDs / sets. I can remember buying it in 1977 and being so disappointed with it - thinking it was a full album rather than an EP.

Bet Peter Gabriel could have pulled off that Motown sound though :teasing-neener:

Why is one terrible album in 2010, when he was already well past his prime, relevant to people hating him well before that? One bad choice doesn't invalidate all the other work does it?

Some of pop music is a terrible thing, but there's are some of it I like (just like with anything else I guess). I think with Phil's case, the sell out is just some fans, myself included, not understanding some directions he takes with his albums. I haven't seen the DVD Zing linked, but will probably dislike it for the same reasons he does. On the other hand, Phil has a deep love for the Motown Sound, so I don't think it's a sell out making that DVD. He mentioned a few times he would rather "play on an Aretha Franklin record than on a Yes or Pink Floyd album", so I don't blame in in that regard. I just prefer him more on prog than I would for soul.

Some of his pop stuff is pretty good like "Take Me Home", "The West Side", and "Another Day In Paradise". Of his solo stuff, I really prefer the first two albums the best and I love his playing on Robert Plant's "In The Mood" and Frida's "Something's Going On".

Phil is still my favorite drummer.
