PS3 firmware update killed my Madcatz gamepad, I think...

Did this happen to anyone else?

Apparently, Firmware update 3.50 from back in Sept 2010 had something in it that was supposed to kill off any counterfeit accessories. But some legally licensed older Madcatz gamepads went dead, too. I didn't notice it on mine until now because I've got more gamepads than I need already, and I usually just use the Sixaxix that came with the PS3 anyway.

It's unfortunate, yet kind of cool in a way, because the controller sure looked like it was working and connecting with the USB dongle, but just not pairing with the PS3. Went to the internet and sure enough, my suspicions were confirmed!

"Providing the product is within warranty, Mad Catz will be happy to offer a suitable replacement.

That sounds good but...

The MC pads affected are:

* 2008 Wireless PS3 GamePad (Only the one released prior to 2008)
* 2008 Wired PS3 GamePad (Only the version released prior to 2008)
* PS3 Wireless MicroCon (Discontinued)

So, what are the odds that MC provides a 3 year warranty and/or you've got your paperwork to prove it?

I hear ya! That's easy for them to say since hardly anybody will be taking advantage of their offer, I'm guessing.

Looks like some products Madcatz currently sells have a 5-year warranty, but heck if I know if that's what my gamepad had. I must've had this thing for a few years or more by now? And like you surmised... their website indicates a receipt is needed for all warranty claims. Plus, you are supposed to ship it to them at your own expense. Not hardly worth it in my case seeing as how I bought it at Best Buy on clearance for only $10 bucks.

Besides, most of these 3rd-party controllers don't seem to be quite as good as genuine Sony. I still prefer the Xbox controller, but I've grown to tolerate the Sony DualShock design a bit. Just wish it were perhaps a little larger on the bottom so as to have something more to grip.
