I was blessed to play a gig with B.B. back in the 80's when he was touring universities playing with students from those schools. I wasn't originally chosen to be in his backing band for my school, but I did mentor the drummer who got the gig. On the day of the performance I was called in as the kids they chose were not in the union and the tour couldn't afford the time or money to get their cards in time. So, the regional union rep started going through the directory for my town and I was the best fit, being both a student and young. So, an entirely new band was formed, rehearsed for about two hours, then we played the gig.
it was awful. I mean, truly awful, and in front of a few thousand fans who purchased tickets to see the legendary BB King.
He was nice about it, afterwards. He saw the futility and pointlessness of it and found it hilarious. I learned more from him that day than from any other teacher before or after. I, too, now find the most difficult and broken situations funny, often laughing and joking about how stupid it all is during those moments, which comes in very handy in with all my travel and high stress jobs.
Anyway, I can claim that I once played a 90 minute show with BB King which I pray no one who attended ever discovers I was the drummer that night.
I had about a dozen photos taken with BB and a signed guitar strap, but my fuuckin' bitch of an insane ex-Wife burned them in the now infamous bonfire where all of my drumming career records, photos, awards, and keepsakes were all lost forever. I have nothing but memories now.
