Ruminations on a DIY Powered Desktop Speaker System

Remember those driver holes? Have to cut them out. I still had the hole from when I cut them in the MDF.

Another shot of the cutout. I was originally going to use a rotary tool and just score it with an exacto knife. However, the exacto knife turned out to be good for the job by itself.

Just a shot of the fully cutout hole. It's not perfect, it still needs to be tidied up.

So not to fray the edges as much as possible, I put down some painter's tape.

Here you can see I'm shaving the edges to get the veneer and MDF lined up properly.

I was originally going to just have the speaker wire go through a couple of drilled holes in the back and then caulked to keepit airtight. Changed my mind and got some binding posts. Here is the template so I would know where to drill the holes on the back.

When I got the binding posts, I didn't even think about it, but the shafts were fairly short. Here is a my proof that I'd be able to do it anyway. They come with some plastic spacers and a washer and another nut. All of that had to go unused as it was JUST long enough to get the one nut on.

So make sure the veneer wasn't just a little too much, I used one of the holes I cut out to make sure it would work.

Because my hand won't fit through that 3" hole, I used some small vice-grips to install the nut. I was SURE this was going to be a HUGE PITA. But, those fears were unfounded. Went together like a charm.

So, I know... let me rephrase, I KNOW i had some Acousta-stuf somewhere in my house. I had seen it maybe 2 weeks earlier I swear. However, when I went to go find it--> total failure. So I bought some poly-fill on Amazon so i could get it quickly.

And a picture of the fully constructed speakers to the little amp I'll be using in conjunction with my Echo Dot.
