Sarah Jarosz

And my new most treasured album art, still my favorite of Sarah's three albums, I think!

Yet another artist I've just "discovered" through The Annex.

Thanks Paul.

Jeff

ps. Regards to the family as well!

Once again, just awesome that you and your family got to share a great concert and meet and greet!

Thanks for sharing the :text-coolphotos:! The signed CD cover had to have been the icing on the cake for you!

Off to see Sarah again tonight, same venue. This time I'll see if I can sneak in my Fuji - nice to have a camera that doesn't "look" like a fancy camera (e.g. big 'ole honkin' lens).

Really, REALLY good show last night! Same trio as before - Sarah on vocals, guitars and mandolin; Nathaniel Smith on cello; Alex Hargreaves on violin. They've been on tour together for a year or so now, and you can tell. I thought they were much tighter, playing together and interacting, and really having fun.

This venue is a sit-down dinner type place, with 12-seat tables aligned around the stage. We got there early so we got the best seats in the house - front and center, 3' from the stage. We we so close I could barely get all three of the performers in one picture, even with my wide(ish)-angle lens (pics coming)! I could even interact with them a bit in breaks between songs without standing up and shouting. :) Good sound system, too.

Apparently it was an interesting day for them too - their plane was late, and they arrived at the venue after we had already sat down to eat; doors opened at 6pm - show usually starts around 7:30, and for whatever reason there was no opening band, even though I thought there was one on the schedule, dunno what happened... but they didn't even have that buffer of time. They came in and did their sound check in their street clothes, looking a little harried, with the whole (sold out) crowd watching.

But they came out at 7:30 and played for a little over an hour and a half, mostly as a full trio but with a few solo spots by Sarah and one (very cool) duet with Sarah on vocals only and Nate on cello doing Dylan's Simple Twist of Fate. By this time they seemed relaxed and happy, and chatted more with the audience than last time, I think. It was a really good performance; Sarah's got one of the best folk/americana voices around. And these guys are YOUNG - early 20's, Sarah just finished college a year ago, and already has three albums. Wow. Really top-notch musicians, IMHO, and they have a long promising career ahead of them, I believe.

After the show, they came out to hang with the crowd, sign autographs, etc. So we got to talk to each of them. They actually remembered me and my family from last year! That was cool. Guess they don't get a lot of families with young kids at shows like these - my girls were the only sub-teens in the crowd, as far as I saw. They loved it! And tickets at this venue are generally reasonable - $25; you pay for a meal too so the total cost is more, but the food is GOOD and so is the beer selection :D so it's really a good deal overall.

So we had a really good time, despite traffic in both directions (Friday afternoon in DC, and an Orioles game had just let out when we got back to Baltimore). I took a bunch of pictures, haven't even looked at them to see how they came out, but I'll post some soon after going through them.

I'll put in a plug - if you haven't heard any of Sarah's albums, and are at all interested in acoustic bluegrass/folk/Americana, this is great stuff. Sarah's also a terrific songwriter, really interesting music. The albums are mixes of her own songs with various covers. You can preview them here on her site:

A few highlights:

The venue, we were ~#10 in line for seats; tickets are general admission, you're seated in the order you come in.

Note that all these pictures were taken from my seat at the table, with a 23mm lens. My Fuji was set on full auto, and these are un-retouched JPGs straight out of the camera (except the one of Sarah and my family, which I brightened a little as lighting was terrible).

Sarah with Elton... pretty cool. Sorry, I don't know who the other fellow is.
