For some reason local dealers here prefer the 600 over the 650. I also took out the foam covering the diaphragms and it made it sound more open.

See, that is exactly the problem - people are fucking deaf anymore. I specifically got the HD650 cans because they were on sale AND I know I like a more neutral, flatter sound which adds as little flavor to the original material as possible. I don't hate the HD600, but it is brighter and more "harsh" which creates the artificial impression of having "more detail", but in fact it is just accentuating the same content which is already in the recording and the engineers didn't necessarily want accentuated.
