Back before I went with Comcast I was going to buy a TiVo and just use OTA programming (I've since added a home network and a Roku). The monthly fee you had to pay TiVo just for the Programming Guide made me swing over to Comcast, whom I've been with for two years now.

This device was mentioned in the latest Home Theater, and sounds like just what I'm looking for. You don't have to pay a monthly fee at all, but $4.99 gets you a programming guide, streaming to 5 devices (iPads, etc) and one-button Record. You have to supply your own hard drive, but you can get a 1 TB HD for less than $100 (that's a lot of cooking shows and sitcoms!).

Its not available until later this Spring, but for what I'm paying Comcast I could get all the hardware paid for in three months. :shhh:

(ah, didn't know I could link to a picture on an https:// site, guess I can!)
