The 25 best-selling rock bands of all time

Thanks, interesting list. Some surprises on there to me, like Dave Matthews band, had no idea they ranked up there in sales.

I'm now kind of curious as to what they counted, and what they didn't, when I realized KISS was not on the list; Stanley and Simmons were worth over $800M apiece!

I think a large portion of that is branded merchandise.

Motley Crew...yeesh!:gross:

They said best selling, not best bands.

I am a MC fan, I have liked them since their Too Fast For Love EP, I dig most of their studio stuff although I rarely listen too them unless they pop up on Pandora. However, live, they are one of the absolute worst bands I have ever seen and I vowed a long time ago never to pay to see them again.

It is about sales, so I'm not surprised by the list. I'm a huge Rush fan, so was surprised to see them mentioned and equally surprised The Who were left out. Dave Matthews Band had over 10 million sales by the end of the 90s, so that was no surprised either.

I'm a bit confused about the list. I counted 33 bands listed and am assuming The Beatles were the top of the list and ZZ (#33) was at the bottom. Is that right? If so, then Tom Petty is #25 out of those 33 entries.

I thought the Rolling Stones' sales would be higher.
Van Halen's numbers were pretty high too. I never knew they sold so many records.

Good to see Metallica up there with the most successful artists.

I finally looked through the list, it was interesting and somewhat surprising knowing the wealth and power of many big bands who were not included. Then I noticed that this data was solely based on US record sales. I think the list would be very different if it were based on global record sales.

The other thing that struck me were the surprising number of bands who didn't release very many records doing so well. So I looked up the acts that only had a few records released only to discover they actually had a ton more records than I realized and nearly all of them charted on the top 100 in the US. Even Nirvana, who only released three original studio albums, had 12 total albums including live records, compilations, and boxed sets.

I would still love to see a global sales chart, I imagine artists like Elton John would appear on that list.

That's what I was thinking when I saw Boston on the list. Don't Look Back and Third Stage are pretty good, but I bet they are a distant second and third in sales compared to the first album.
