So people voted to make The Monkees the next inductees in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
If they get the nod, who actually gets inducted - the producers, directors, musical directors, writers, studio musicians, writers, and stylists who were responsible for The Monkees rise to fame? Or, the four actors who were not necessarily good musicians who happened to get through the audition process and memorize their lines for the show? Sure, over time they started writing their own music and performing live, but once they started down that path their popularity dell dramatically. Today we love them because as a whole they were a big fat "F.U." to popular music, Hollywood fame, and even fandom and want to relive that era and the moods they brought us. But their biggest hits were not their own. Their performances were only marginally theirs, mostly just lead vocals, and their song choices were not theirs. What was theirs?
Really, if anyone should get inducted as the core responsibility for The Monkees songs, sound, and performances, that would be Don Kirshner, the musical director for the TV show who found the songwriters, studio musicians, engineers, and so on which made The Monkees top 10 stars on the charts. Later, when Mike Nesmith decided to bite the hand that fed him and refused to work with Don anymore (after Don famously told him to shut up and follow orders like a good monkey), Don left the show and formed the Archies, proving his belief that you don't need a talented star to make a top 10 hit.
