I grew up on this stuff, and a lot of it I learned playing my second-year "Fun for Trombones" books. Amazing how Burt B. could insert just a bar of these weirdo time signatures into a great pop song, and make it just that much better.

I'd never heard the Issac Hayes version before. Ain't too bad. Lots of additional instrumentation to enjoy. Though, pretty much any way you slice a Bacharach tune it's going to be good. But think I prefer Dionne Warwick's poppier version. At least right now, anyway.

I've definitely got to hit the Motown museum now that I live in metro Detroit. My father lives in Cleveland, so I'll probably have a chance to hit the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame as well.
 
i did not realize that song was a Bacharach tune. I actually like the Dionne version as well as Isaac's (though prefer Isaac's when I'm in the mood for a more funk and/or soul tune). I agree about the Dionne/Isaac duet being a great performance. Hard to believe that clip is 20 years old.

That is the exact reason why I prefer Isaac Hayes version better. Warwick's version is dainty and light with a happy tune but the song is not about happiness. I think Hayes' version sets the mood more appropriately to what the song is actually trying to convey. It's dark and somber like a song about lost love should be.
