What Are You Listening To?

I'm starting to realize every single Quincy Jones album has the exact same songs as all the others, just with different arrangements and guest artists/rappers. :|

This is some fucking good shit here!!!

Imagine if you will: The Beatles and Oasis... or Hanson and the Jonas Brothers... or, dare to dream, Vanilla Ice and Eminem. In each and every case a spectacular duo of musical giants paired together on a single album. Well, that's exactly what you get with NKOTBSB.

Two monsters of the Boy Band genre, the "New Kids on the Block" and the "Backstreet Boys", have come together. Finally!!! Now, don't jizz your pants just yet, because there are unfortunately only a couple of newly recorded songs. So the album, to be released May 23rd, is mostly just old repackaged hit songs from the individual bands. That said... the new songs sung by the recently merged band, even if too few, are absolutely fantastic! Granted, I've only heard the 30-second samples off iTunes. But I could still tell, you know?

Anyway, I can't hardly wait until NKOTBSB brings their tour to my town. An intense pop-and-lock routine to a pre-recorded dance track? With all nine singers each trying to lip sync together in perfect time?? Plus an entire audience of middle-aged ladies singing along whilst their tits and back-fat jiggles??? It's gonna be awesome! Totally.

P.S. - April 29th is the new April 1st. May 23rd, however, is not.

Someone needs to photoshop the title to say "YGBMFKM" (You Got To Be Mother Fucking Kidding Me).

It kinda pisses me off that there is some great music to be discovered out there (past and present) yet the studios continue to crank out these kinds of horse turds for us to munch on. WTF?! :angry-banghead:

What do you mean? Separately, these two vocal groups sold gazillions of merchandise. But together? The NKOTBSB will prove to be even more fruitful.

I hate to be a jerk, but you obviously haven't seen this video:
It's totally kickass!!!

Kaz, sometimes I worry about you.

Oooooh, a 9-way crotch grab move! Wow.

You have to keep in mind, "Hanson" is his favorite group!

...and there is nothing wrong with that!

Their only goal is to make money, and someone's buying this stuff.

I actually do like Hanson as they sing, play, and write their own material (some of which is just good old classic rock music).

But I'm just kidding around with NKOTBSB, of course. I mean, heck, you can't just "like" that kind of music. Nope, you've gotta "love" it! And, yes, the 9-way crotch grab move is impressive! If NKOTBSB were just lowly talents like Elvis or Jim Morrison (or even the Monkees) they'd have all been arrested for lewd conduct. As it is, they are above the law. And deservedly so, I might add.

Everybody loves this stuff, even Evan Dando. The "New Kids" maybe weren't the first to record this particular song, but the Lemonheads version is pretty much a spot-on copy of the New Kids' arrangement. Check out the 2:40 mark where Dando's singing mimics all the various members of NKOTB.

I was surprised at the large amount of 9-man-unison singing in that clip, both groups could at least vocalize.

My all-time favorite vocal group, however:

Got to see them live a couple years ago, amazing.

You know... it wouldn't be selling if it wasn't good, right?

For instance, it's a bit like a flashy movie with a bad storyline. People won't pay to watch such a polished turd. I mean, really, if they did then "Avatar" would've become the highest grossing movie of all time.

Ahh, yes... "Take 6" is pretty good. If I recall correctly they were inspired to form a group after seeing "5ive" in this music video:

Huh, I didn't know 5ive had been around that long.

The first time I saw Take 6 was on, I believe, the Grammy Awards. They took the stage right after the Manhattan Transfer, which I thought was kind of unfair; but within 20 seconds my jaw was on the floor and I've been a fan ever since. :handgestures-thumbup: :handgestures-thumbup: :handgestures-thumbup:

Low Spark of High Heeled Boys -- CD

Traffic

1971/1990 Island Records

Amazon.com

Despite not even charting in the band's native England, this album became a platinum-selling American hit on the basis of three enduring FM radio staples--the expansive, jazzy impressionism of the near-12 minute title track, and the more straightforward funk of the R&B charmers "Light Up or Leave Me Alone" and "Rock & Roll Stew." Those disparate tracks perfectly underscore Traffic's rich musical appeal and its restless, sometimes problematic creative and interpersonal relationships. With now thrice-departed Dave Mason out of the mix and percussionists Jim Gordon and Reebop Kwaku Baah participating in the studio for the first time, the band's innate musicality truly takes wing. Winwood's familiar vocal phrasings nearly take a backseat to his fluid, dramatic guitar work on "Rock & Roll Stew Roll" and "Many a Mile to Freedom," while the Tull-ish, folk-madrigal sensibilities of "Hidden Treasure" and "Rainmaker" are further punctuated by Chris Wood's deft flute and woodwind flourishes. Compared with the more organic John Barleycorn album, the contrast is all the more remarkable. While many contemporary bands were experimenting with various attempts at fusion, few achieved this collection's rock-jazz-folk-R&B range or level of often subtle sophistication. Digitally remastered, this edition also contains the six-minute-plus U.S. single version of "Rock & Roll Stew, Parts 1 & 2" as a bonus track. --Jerry McCulley

"Hidden Treasure" – 4:16
"The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" – 11:35
"Light Up or Leave Me Alone" (Jim Capaldi) – 4:55
"Rock & Roll Stew" (Ric Grech, Jim Gordon) – 4:29
"Many a Mile to Freedom" (Steve Winwood, Anna Capaldi[1]) – 7:26

Greatest Hits I & II -- 2 CD Set

Queen

1992 Hollywood Records

Amazon.com essential recording

Queen brought a whole new meaning to the phrase over the top. While rock & roll flamboyance stretched back at least as far as Little Richard, Freddie Mercury continued to camp it up, taking little seriously and smirking at the music's growing pretensions while partaking in them no small bit. Many of the band's singles hold up extremely well, later tracks such as "Hammer to Fall" as much as prime-era numbers such as "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Killer Queen," and "You're My Best Friend." The quartet's canny sense of melody and sophisticated vocal harmonies--not to mention Mercury's raised eyebrow--have traveled well through the years. --Rickey Wright

Temptation -- CD

Shelby Lynne

1995 Morgan Creek Records

Swing it, Shelby!, August 1, 2001
By Just_Karen (Portland, Oregon)
(VINE VOICE)

If you came late to Shelby, and you're looking for more of the harsh, changeable, sublime stuff you found on "I am Shelby Lynne," you owe it to yourself to check out Shelby in an earlier incarnation. I have them all, but this is my favorite. It's also nothing like her most recent work. This CD features a full-on swing orchestra with steel guitars and fiddles, and Shelby's great big alto booming out over impeccable instrumentation. Get it while you can, because if you love her voice, you'll never hear it featured more beautifully than in these arrangements.

"Temptation" (Shelby Lynne, Brent Maher, Jamie O'Hara) – 3:04
"Feelin' Kind of Lonely Tonight" (Maher, O'Hara) – 3:00
"Tell Me I'm Crazy" (Rory Michael Bourke, Mike Reid) – 3:44
"Little Unlucky at Love" (Maher, O'Hara) – 3:01

Greatest Hits -- CD

Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band

1994 Capitol Records

Amazon.com

Bob Seger has racked up a lot of worthy tracks over the years, but it took until 1994 for a greatest hits package to appear. Voilà. The bad news: We're missing an awful lot of songs here. Night Moves is Seger's crit-pick album, and a great place to start if you don't have any Seger at all. Next in the rankings is Stranger in Town. Otherwise, his highs are pretty scattered, which would make any best-of package a worthy investment. But if you want to get comprehensive, "Rock & Roll Never Forgets," "Fire Down Below," "Horizontal Bop," "Her Strut," "Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight," and "Katmandu" aren't on this CD--and you'll have to go to the original albums to secure them. --Gavin McNett

All tracks written by Bob Seger except where noted.

"Roll Me Away" (from The Distance) – 4:36
"Night Moves" (from Night Moves) – 5:25

Hard Bargain -- Deluxe Edition CD/DVD

Emmylou Harris

2011 Nonesuch Records

Hard Bargain is Emmylou's finest work., April 26, 2011
By Robert G Yokoyama (Mililani, Hawaii) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hard Bargain (Audio CD)

"Hard Bargain" is an album that features eleven new songs. Emmylou has never sounded better. Her voice conveys warmth, joy and empathy on these tracks. "Hard Bargain" is about having the strength to move on in life despite feeling weary. I like the banjo playing on this song. "New Orleans" is an up tempo song about the resilience of the city of New Orleans. "Big Black Dog" is an enjoyable song about finding homes for homeless dogs. "Nobody" is a song about feeling comfortable about being single. This song is also about having hope that love is right around the corner. "My Name is Emmett Till" is a song about a black teenager who was killed in 1955 for talking to a white woman. Emmylou is a great story teller. This song proves it. Emmett Till death started the civil rights movement and the call for peace. Emmylou conveys this in the song. Her vocals are very moving on this song. "The Road" is a song about Emmylou's singing partner Gram Parsons who died in 1973. This tune is about the special relationship they had with each other. "Ship on His Arm" is the best love song on this album. This song is very pretty. It is the first song that contains a reference to a tattoo in it. "Six White Cadillacs" is a song that puts me in a good mood. I love the spirited tone of this song. "Darlin' Kate" is a beautiful song about saying farewell to a loved one. The musical arrangements of this song are so beautiful. "Goodnight Old World" is a song that gives me a sense of peace. "Home Sweet Home" is a song that makes me appreciate my home. Emmylou caresses every note on this song perfectly. This song is very pleasant. "Cross Yourself" has a spiritual tone that I really like. "Lonely Girl" is a lovely tune. Emmylou's voice makes me feel a sense of empathy for all the lonely girls in the world. This is a very enjoyable album from Emmylou Harris.
