Red Dirt Girl -- CD

Emmylou Harris

2000 Nonesuch Records

Amazon.com

Consider this Emmylou Harris's emancipation proclamation--an album that confirms that 1995's adventurously atmospheric Wrecking Ball wasn't an aberration, but a preview of more radical changes to come. Long the godmother of alternative-country's traditionalist wing, Harris here writes songs with Luscious Jackson's Jill Cunniff, sings a duet with Dave Matthews ("My Antonia"), and recruits Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa to provide harmonies on the album's most compelling ballad ("Tragedy"). The production by Malcolm Burn applies sonic treatments of drum machines, shimmering guitars, and echoed vocals to a song cycle by Harris that is largely original and deeply personal, filled with dream imagery and evocations of a spiritual quest. While material such as "Michaelangelo" and "Bang the Drum Slowly" suffers from an arty ponderousness, it's doubtful that Harris has ever recorded an album that means more to her than this one. --Don McLeese

All tracks written by Emmylou Harris, except where noted.

"The Pearl" – 5:02
"Michelangelo" – 5:14
"I Don't Wanna Talk About It Now" – 4:47

I don't know if Eleanor McEvoy is in touch with her feelings. She's certainly in touch with mine.

Anyone who listens even casually to the words on Eleanor's album "Yola" is sure to find an emotional connection there. Listen closely, and you may wonder if she's been tapping your phone or reading your diary. But no, I suspect the real truth is simply that Eleanor has the soul of a poet wrapped in the body of an incredibily talented singer-songwriter, and the combined package is hard to beat.

The music is simply, but elegantly arranged, backing Eleanor's compelling vocals with her own guitar and fiddle licks, co-producer Brian Connor's keyboards, Liam Bradley's percussion and backing vocals, and Eoghan O'Neill's bass.

Wow, it's taken quite a few thousand albums to inspire me to write a review of a new album... This follow-up to Bird in a House (also a brilliant album) is absolutely fantastic. I was sold on the band the moment I first heard them on their debut The Blackbear Sessions. I then saw them live in Waitsfield, VT (see title track # 5, Good Life, "went up the Mad River Valley and never looked back...") and realized that I was completely sold.
I have to admit, with a slight change of style I was ready for a let-down. Good Life was just the opposite. I've never listened to an album (well maybe Dark Side of the Moon) so many times. I left it in the truck and it made me want to drive all the time.
The album is strong throughout, with my favorites being:
#1: Storms
A ghostly ambience like the moments just before the rain starts pouring down, except with tempo and smooth melodies
#3: Mourning Flies
Another haunting melody that digs deep and hits you, paving the way for a firm quiet jam
#4: Long Way to Go
This song could have been written in 60's/70's, by Creedence Clearwater Revival. One of the catchy tune on the album, I've been whistling and mouthing this one for weeks.
#6: Said What You Mean
A purely original, not quite tear-jerking ballad. From start to finish exactly what I want to be listening to. It makes me feel a little like I'm back in middle school in that I haven't been this moved by a ballad since then.
Te rest of the tunes on the album.. they blow away some of the finest on other recent albums from related bands. If you haven't listened to any RRE shame on you.

"Storms" (Sheaffer) - 4:54
"Bread and Water" (Railroad Earth, Sheaffer) - 4:24

"In the Basement" (Sheaffer, Skehan) - 5:09
"Water Fountain Quicksand" (Skehan) - 2:55
"Goat" (Sheaffer) - 4:50
"Said What You Mean" (Sheaffer) - 6:32

Paper Airplane -- CD

Alison Krauss & Union Station

2011 Rounder Records

A truly breathtaking collection of 11 exquisite songs, Paper Airplane is Alison Krauss' 14th album and the band's follow-up to 2004's triple Grammy® winning Lonely Runs Both Ways (Rounder). It is Krauss' first release since her 2007 internationally acclaimed, multi-platinum collaboration with Robert Plant, Raising Sand, which won six Grammys including "Record Of The Year" and "Album Of The Year."

Alison Krauss and Union Station features the talents of Krauss (fiddle and lead vocals), Dan Tyminski (guitar, mandolin and lead vocals), Barry Bales (bass and harmony vocals), Ron Block (banjo, guitar and harmony vocals), and Jerry Douglas (Dobro and harmony vocals). Paper Airplane was produced by the band and recorded in Nashville with engineer Mike Shipley (Maroon 5, The Cars, Def Leppard, Joni Mitchell). As bluegrass virtuosos the members of Union Station are beyond compare, and the music they create together transcends all genres. Their work on films such as Cold Mountain and O Brother, Where Art Thou? has contributed immeasurably to a renaissance of American roots music.

Part of Alison Krauss' incontestable talent is how effortlessly she bridges the gap between roots music and country, rock and pop. A highly sought-after collaborator, Krauss has worked with some of the biggest names in popular music, including James Taylor, Phish, Dolly Parton, Yo Yo Ma & Bonnie Raitt. Since signing with Rounder Records at the age of 14 in 1985 Krauss has sold in excess of 12 million albums and garnered 26 Grammy® Awards, the most for any female and the third most of any recording artist in Grammy® history.

It will forever remain a mystery to me why this talented young lady is not signed to a label at this time. I have never been moved by a performer quite as much as I am with this Diva. She has such a warmth to her voice, such control and such a wonderful range. I have listened to this CD a hundred times at least and I never tire of it. If someone out there is reading this that can put this classy young lady back on the road to stardom I wish you would take the chance. She is absolutely a-m-a-z-i-n-g.

Perfectly Clear -- CD

Jewel

2008 Valory Records

Product Description
It comes as no surprise that Jewel, an acclaimed American singer, songwriter, actress, poet, painter, philanthropist and daughter to an Alaskan cowboy singer-songwriter, finds herself in the embrace of country music for the release of her seventh career album, Perfectly Clear.

Nashville Connections

Jewel's personal odyssey, partly chronicled on one of the best selling debut albums of all time, the twelve-time platinum Pieces of You, comes full circle with her forthcoming country album, Perfectly Clear, the debut release on newly launched Nashville-based independent label The Valory Music Co.

Jewel is set apart her whole career for not only singing, but writing all her songs, and this album is no exception. "I've been writing country songs my whole career; some of the songs on this record date back to when I was 18 years old. I've been hanging on to them until now. They were meant for a record like this one."

The record's first single "Stronger Woman" is a powerful and positive message that resonates with women of any age. Perfectly Clear is produced by Jewel and John Rich of Big and Rich fame. "Jewel is probably one of the greatest American singer-songwriters we have. It is such an honor to work with anyone of that caliber of talent," Rich says. Jewel has spent a lot of time in Nashville over the last few years, and has naturally been drawn to and accepted by the Nashville music community. "If I were discovered today, there is no doubt that I would be signed as a country artist. Songs like "You Were Meant For Me" would have been a country hit today, and not a pop hit as it was in the 90s. The genres have changed more than I feel I have," says Jewel.

"Stronger Woman" (Jewel, Marv Green) – 4:02
"I Do" (Jewel) – 4:04
"Love Is a Garden" (Jewel, Shaye Smith) – 3:48
"Rosey And Mick" (Jewel) – 3:36

"Thump Thump" (Jewel) – 3:57

"Everything Reminds Me of You" (Jewel, Joe Firstman) – 3:15
"Loved By You (Cowboy Waltz)" (Jewel) – 3:28
"Perfectly Clear" (Jewel) – 2:56

I sure wished his music was available. Peter King supposedly has about 14 albums in his discography. I know of 8 titles but I have only seen/found 6 of those 8. I now have 4 of the known 8 with a fifth one (hopefully) arriving on my doorstep soon.

I love finding rare and/or unreleased music and the challenge in trying to find them is and can be a fun journey. It can also be disappointing at times too. Pete's stuff has been the hardest for me to find.

Little Bit Of Everything -- CD

Billy Currington

This review is from: Little Bit Of Everything (Audio CD)

I love the "fun" in this CD. I bought the CD knowing only the song "People Are Crazy" after seeing Billy Currington perform it on an awards show. The songs "Swimmin' in Sunshine" and "Everything" put a bounce in my step and a smile on my face. The songs "Don't," "Walk On," and "Heal Me" have slow, thoughtful lyrics that complement the lively songs that are my favorites. "That's How Country Boys Roll" has a little Lynyrd Skynyrd flavor to it, while "I Shall Return" reminds me of Jimmy Buffett's songs. However, the sound is uniquely Billy Currington. I look forward to more music from this artist.

"Swimmin' in Sunshine" (Brett Beavers, Jim Beavers) – 4:46
"Life and Love and the Meaning Of" (Billy Currington, Tony Martin, Mark Nesler) – 3:40
"Every Reason Not to Go" (Currington, Martin, Nesler) – 4:12
"Don't" (J. Beavers, Jonathan Singleton) – 3:57
"People Are Crazy" (Bobby Braddock, Troy Jones) – 3:52
"Everything" (J. Beavers, Chris Hennessee) – 4:20
"Walk On" (Ashley Gorley, Wade Kirby, Bryant Simpson) – 3:58
"No One Has Eyes Like You" (Currington, Brett Jones) – 2:58
"That's How Country Boys Roll" (Currington, Dallas Davidson, B. Jones) – 3:44

Learn To Live -- CD

Darius Rucker

2008 Capitol Nashville

Amazon.com

As the lead singer and co-writer for Hootie & the Blowfish, Darius Rucker always eschewed overt R & B, and fixed the band’s music in roots rock. Now on this solo album, Learn to Live, he immerses himself in the typical Nashville themes of home, hearth, and spirituality, with varying results. His sturdy baritone knows how to carry these messages, and he displays an ease with country phrasing. Furthermore, he's assembled a fine passel of pickers, from mainstream guests Vince Gill, Alison Krauss and Brad Paisley, to 'grassers Aubrey Haynie and Bryan Sutton. All this works fine on the radio—the album and the single "Don't Think I Don't Think About It," which logged the number one slot on the country charts. But while Rucker pays fine homage to Buck Owens with the intro to the humorous divorce declaration "All I Want," and nurtures his inner redneck on the barroom anthem "Drinkin' and Dialin'," too many clichés weave their way into his lyrics, and the overall sound is that of amiable, cookie-cutter, country pop. Next time out, let’s hope Rucker reaches farther back into his South Carolina roots for a more authentic backwoods connection. -– Alanna Nash

Here For The Party -- CD

Gretchen Wilson

2004 EPIC Nashville

Amazon.com

Her mother was 16 when she had her, and her father moved on when she was two. By the age of 15, with a double-barrel shotgun always at the ready, she was managing a kicker bar in rural Illinois where the corn fields meet the pig farms. That gave Gretchen Wilson something to sing about, with attitude in spades. "You might think I'm trashy, a little too hardcore," she admits on the smash single "Redneck Woman," "but in my neck of the woods I'm just the girl next door." Wilson, already the toast of Nashville before this full-length debut hit the shelves, isn't just putting the trailer park back into country music--she's the antidote to Shania and Faith. Nothing here sounds manufactured or studied, and the best songs are those she wrote. If most of those spotlight the fightin' side that has made "Redneck Woman" an anthem with blue-collar babes, she lets her vulnerability show on her choice of covers, particularly Leslie Satcher's gospel-rap of "Chariot" and the marital weeper "The Bed." Whatever you think of Wilson, who packs a hint of Sammi Smith and Allison Moorer--and even Janis Joplin--into her double-fisted delivery, you won't forget her. Move over, Loretta. Make way, Tanya. Here's another good ol' honky-tonk girl. --Alanna Nash

The Baddest of... -- CD

George Thorogood and The Destroyers

By "coalblacksky@hotmail.com" (Tacoma, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Baddest of George Thorogood and the Destroyers (Audio CD)

While rough and ready rocker George Thorogood may not be original; covering the likes of Bo Diddley, "Who Do You Love" and "John Lee Hooker's drinking anthem "One Bourbon...," his reverential treatment of his latter day idols has a personality all its own. Classic Thorogood originals like "I Drink Alone" and "Bad To The Bone" blend so well with his covers, the boogie magic of "Treat Her Right," that you can't tell the difference. And if you can, it doesn't matter anyway. George and his longtime band The Delaware Destroyers are out to party like its 1959 and Chuck Berry is God. After listening to this "best of" collection, you might be inclined to agree.

Yeah, but that "Split Personality" will sure make you think twice! :shhh:

EDIT: Where are my manors?!! Thanks Dane, I was just trying to be funny. I will look into her work. After all, I picked up Jamie Paul's "Melancholy Baby" album after you recommended her, and I really like it. She sounds much older/more mature than she looks, that's for sure and can really sing. Thanks! :handgestures-thumbup:

Dennie, it wasn't me who recommended Jamie Paul. I'm not sure if I have any of her music...will have to check.

Here is my latest CD that just arrived today from New Zealand. Oddly it won't release in the US until October I think. This is without a doubt my number one all-time favorite female artist. If you've seen my Webshots albums you already know this.

Hayley Westenra - Paradiso

It will enter the CDP very soon.
