You Are There -- CD

For her sophomore CD, Hilary Cole sings 13 covers accompanied by 11 jazz pianists: Kenny Barron, Monty Alexander, Alan Broadbent, Cedar Walton, Freddy Cole, Benny Green, Steve Kuhn, Michel Legrand, Dave Brubeck, Mike Renzi, and the late Hank Jones. The results are sophisticated and enchanting, perfectly showcasing her pitch perfect vocals and pellucid phrasing. Oh, and did I mention that she is also rather easy on the eye? :)

Dave Brubeck accompanies her twice, on "These foolish things" and "Strange meadowlark", as does Hank Jones on "If I had you" and "But beautiful". There isn't any need to go into each track, but "Everytime we say goodbye" has a simple divine piano break (Cedar Walton), while Freddy Cole also duets vocally with her on the playful "It's always you" (and sounding like Nat King Cole). She also handles the challenging Billy Strayhorn classic "Lush life" with Kenny Barron with ease.

Every song is a classic, the last Jazz CD I enjoyed as much was My One & Only Thrill by Melody Gardot.
Kole inhabits each song with inflections and emotion that belies her age. Truly beautiful romantic music.

Don't remember exactly how or why I even got this CD. But I like it. It's Jackie Allen's "Which?" album and it has pretty good fidelity. Plus, this girl's got a great voice! Musically, it's a bit jazzy with lots of piano, a little percussion, and (presumably) upright bass. And, of course, there's that fantastic voice! Or did I already mention that? ;)

Definitely recommended.

Burning The Daze -- CD

Marc Cohn

1998 Atlantic Records

Amazon.com

Sidelined by a divorce and single fatherhood, Marc Cohn returns to active duty rejuvenated, if recognizably scarred, since the marginal disappointment of his sophomore outing. Burning the Daze strikes closer to the high mark set by his '91 debut, his sultry vocals and well-crafted songs attesting to the set's careful gestation. Guitarist John Leventhal, a not-quite-secret weapon on the prior albums, is officially aboard as coproducer, an apt choice given his contributions to other recent singer-songwriters' studio work, bringing his versatility and musicianship to bear on a solid new clutch of Cohn originals. "Already Home" opens the set with a sleek midtempo groove, Memphis-cured horn riffs, and allusions to Homer and the Wizard of Oz, "Saints Preserve Us" successfully cops from the Band, and "Lost You In The Canyon" transforms a cell phone into an effective metaphor for more primal communication problems. --Sam Surtherland

All songs written by Marc Cohn, except "Already Home" written by Marc Cohn and John Leventhal; "Turn to Me" written by Marc Cohn and Kevin Salem; and "Turn on Your Radio" written by Harry Nilsson.

I can't stop listening to this disk though I've had it for a decade but haven't payed much attention. Started out to make a Mardi Gras disk for a party this year and this knocked me off my feet now that I finally really listened. Sonny Landreth produces and plays. Richard Thompson was dragged from Jazz Fest. Just a bunch of musicians that love cajun music getting together and having fun, mostly with non-traditional stuff but the playing is tight and the whole thing really smokes. Was She a Woman or a Man is surreal.

1. Wooly Bully
2. Bayou Pom Pom
3. Un Autre Soir Ennuyant (Another Lonely Night)
4. Hey, Good Lookin' (Hé 'Tite Fille)
5. Last Wednesday Night (Mercredi Soir Passé)
6. Louie, Louie
7. Woman or a Man?

9. Zydeco Boogaloo
10. Like a Real Cajun (Comme un Vrai Cajun)
11. J'Ai Passé Devant Ta Porte (I Passed by Your Door)

Twice The Speed of Life -- CD

Sugarland

2004 Mercury Nashville

Amazon.com

A surprise hit in 2004 and 2005, this Atlanta-based threesome arrived on the scene at precisely the right time--when country trios (Dixie Chicks, Rascal Flatts, and to a lesser extent, Trick Pony and SheDaisy) had proved themselves in the marketplace. Like those acts, Sugarland trade on solid and sometimes intricate harmonies and a killer lead vocalist. In this case, the full-tilt Jennifer Nettles plays Natalie Maines to Kristen Hall and Kristian Bush's Emily and Martie. And while it would be lovely to hear another member of the trio out front occasionally, Nettles, a deep-dish Southerner who knows no one-syllable words ("air" is "aye-er"), is a commanding presence. Stylistically, the group mixes it up, from the folk-rock of Hall and Bush's backgrounds to the driving pop that dominates much of contemporary country radio; thematically, the songs largely revolve around restlessness, the need to escape restrictions and find one's self, and the faith that things will work out. "Baby Girl," the hit about an itinerant musician writing home for money and emotional connectedness, is but one of several surefire winners here, which include "Something More," a mid-tempo quest for a more meaningful life, and "Tennessee," in which a radio request line rescues true love. The quieter songs ("Fly Away," "Hello") are no less well written and affecting, even as the barnburning "Down in Mississippi (Up to No Good)," about housewife ennui and riverboat gambling, falls embarrassingly flat. Does this triad have staying power? Well, just as their name implies, they're a little too sweet to equal the Chicks' gravitas, but there's no denying they've got energy to burn. --Alanna Nash

It's only 45 minutes of country music and there's also a few lows - some songs just needed more music from the musicians, and I'm pretty sure they could deliver that if asked for; use two microphones instead of just one next time for their vocals, just listen to their live performance on kcrw-morning becomes eclectic and you'll understand what I'm talking about.

But the highs of this record are, really, of a very high standard, music beautifully performed, with soul, passion and originality. Buy one and find it for yourself, they can actually reach you with their voices/music like only a much selected bunch of artists ever did! It's deliberately supposed to sound like a vintage recording but I guess they somehow managed to deliver some magic moments that can potentially put this album in the classics shelf.

I am completely blown away by how excellent the songwriting and musicianship is in this recording. Despite all the talk of Sarah's age, which is irrelevant, this woman has created a near masterpiece. If one listens closely, it's easy to hear the Radiohead influence in her melodies, which is great, and her cover of their song is pretty kick ass. It's clear that Sarah has a bright future ahead of her because she'll only get better. It'll be difficult to top herself cuz she set the bar so high, but I'll be listening closely.
