The Best of Kansas -- CD

Kansas

1984/1999 Columbia Records

Good Place To Start, July 1, 2000
By Bill R. Moore (New York, USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)

This is that rare best of album that actually features the band's best of. Not sacrificing longer tracks for shorter pieces (well, Magnum Opus maybe, but...) this collection truly gives a good overview of Kansas. The radio hits are here: Carry On, The Wall, Hold On, Point of No Return, and of course, Dust In The Wind, but even they feature prog overtones. But it's the longer pieces that show the band's excellent musicianship, like Song For America, No One Together, The Pinnacle, and Closet Chronicles. All in all, a good place to start if you're just getting into Kansas.

"Carry on Wayward Son" – 5:22
"Point of Know Return" – 3:11
"Fight Fire with Fire" – 3:40
"Dust in the Wind" – 3:27
"Song for America" – 9:07
"Hold On" – 3:51
"No One Together" – 6:57
"Play the Game Tonight" – 3:26
"The Wall" – 4:47
"The Pinnacle" (Livgren) – 9:36
"The Devil Game" (Dave Hope, Walsh) – 5:04
"Closet Chronicles (Live)" (Livgren, Walsh) – 6:54

The Point Of It All -- CD

Anthony Hamilton

2008 La Face Records

2008 release. There is a tradition in classic Black music that goes back to the smooth crooning of Sam Cooke, the earthy gritty sound of Otis Redding, the lyrical beauty of Curtis Mayfield and the unfiltered intensity of Donny Hathaway. It's a combination of church-rooted hallelujah praisin' and tell-it-like-it-is storytellin'. Few contemporary artists are equipped to carry the torch with any sense of authenticity. Anthony Hamilton may be the sole-indeed, soulful-exception. Simply put, Anthony has proved to be the real deal, as audiences discovered during his countless road treks performing night-after-night before packed crowds of -as he puts it-'young thugs, white and black, mothers with babies on their knees, old school G's and kids looking for something they could feel and relate to.

My Romance marks the arrival of a bright new star in vocal jazz, and heralds the return to the art of telling a story through the simple beauty of the melody. Features Robi Botos, Kevin Breit (Norah Jones, Cassandra Wilson, k.d. Lang), Matt Brubeck (Sheryl Crow, Tom Waits, son of piano great Dave Brubeck), Guido Basso, Don Thompson, A cappella group "Cadence".

Fleetwood Mac -- CD

Fleetwood Mac

1975/1990 Warner Bros. Records

Amazon.com essential recording

With the "classic" Fleetwood Mac and departed guitarists Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer a fading memory, namesakes and rhythm section Mick Fleetwood (drums) and John McVie (bass), along with second generation survivor Christine McVie (vocals, keyboards), let go of their British blues heritage and linked with a failed Californian pop-rock duo, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. That move, born of desperation, yields this 1975 classic: unveiling a taut, well-oiled pop rock band boasting three distinctive singers and songwriters in Buckingham, Nicks, and Christine McVie; Buckingham's extraordinary arrangements and versatile acoustic and electric guitars; and the undeniable horsepower of the founding fathers' rock-solid rhythm work. Buckingham's rave-ups, Nicks's sultry rock ballads, and Christine McVie's soulful, sunny pop form the template for Rumours, which would follow two years later. --Sam Sutherland

Come On Home -- CD

Boz Scaggs

1997 Virgin Records

Bobby Bland, Jimmy Reed, T-Bone Walker . . . Boz Scaggs!, November 4, 2001

stranger2himself (Down Here) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Come on Home (Audio CD)

I grew up on Ray Charles, James Brown, soul, blues, country & gospel. I've been listening to and collecting music for 40 years, and have approx. 3,000 recordings. Simply put, this is one of the best, most soulful, powerful, bodaciously BAD records I've ever heard! There is not a weak cut here. Boz sounds like he's been holding this in for 30 years! The production & playing are flawless, but not too slick. The "live-in-the-studio" sound is preserved. There are no "highlights", every cut is astounding. With that in mind, "Love Letters" brings tears to my eyes, and, like the previous reviewer, I fall to my knees when Boz testifies "I've Got Your Love". His vocal chords should be enshrined; his heart and soul could provide electrical power to most of North America. If you like ANY kind of blues or R&B, you will surely dig this!

"It All Went Down the Drain"
"Ask Me 'Bout Nothin' (But the Blues)"
"Don't Cry No More"
"Found Love"
"Come On Home"
"Picture of a Broken Heart"
"Love Letters"
"I've Got Your Love"
"Early in the Morning"
"Your Good Thing (Is About to End)"
"T-Bone Shuffle"
"Sick and Tired"
"After Hours"
"Goodnight Louise"

Relish -- CD

Joan Osborne

1995 Mercury Records

A surprisingly great album., December 8, 1999

(TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)

This review is from: Relish (Audio CD)

I bought this album so I could own the song "One of Us." I never expected the rest of the album to be so darn good. Osborne is a deeply soulful, passionate singer, a mixture of Bonnie Raitt, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Nicks all rolled into one. The songs are mostly blues based rock and roll, and the pop hit "One of Us" actually has a more mainstream pop sound than the other tunes. But the other songs are just trememdous. "Right Hand Man" and "Let's just Get Naked" are sexy songs, and "Spider Web" is an intense dream that Osborne relates about Ray Charles. Practically all the songs are outstanding. Buy this album.

All songs written by Joan Osborne, Eric Bazilian, Rob Hyman and Rick Chertoff unless otherwise indicated.

"St. Teresa" – 5:20
"Man in the Long Black Coat" (Bob Dylan) – 4:49
"Right Hand Man" (Osborne, Bazilian, Hyman, Chertoff, Don Van Vliet) – 4:57
"Pensacola" – 4:32
"Dracula Moon" – 6:32
"One of Us" (Bazilian) – 5:21
"Ladder" – 4:11
"Spider Web" (Osborne, Chertoff, Gary Lucas, Sammy Merendino, Chris Palmaro) – 5:34
"Let's Just Get Naked" (Osborne, Bazilian) – 5:08
"Help Me" (Sonny Boy Williamson II, Ralph Bass) – 5:14
"Crazy Baby" (Osborne) – 6:31
"Lumina" (Osborne, Bazilian) – 3:08

"One of Us" contains an introduction of "The Airplane Ride," a spiritual written by J. S. McConnel and sung by Nell Hampton, under license from Alan Lomax. Used by permission. Bigger, Better, Faster, More! -- CD

By PSM/Bokor (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bigger, Better, Faster, More! (Audio CD)

I finally picked up this CD for the one song, "What's Up." Without question, that song had stuck with me for years. I wasn't expecting much; I just wanted that one song. I was completely blown away. This CD is absolutely incredible!

There is not one weak song on this creation. I dare say that "What's Up" is not even the best one; I'm rather fond of "Spaceman."

I would call the sound of 4 Non Blondes that of a well-produced garage band. I couldn't picture them filling up massive stadiums, but I bet they would tare down large concert halls.

The singer's voice is unique and powerful. The lyrics are introspective and satisfying. The music, itself, just rocks. The whole combination creates a powerful experience.

It's most unfortunate that this band began and ended here with, "Bigger, Better, Faster, More."

"Train" (Linda Perry) – 3:42
"Superfly" (Perry, Katrina Sirdofsky) – 4:37
"What's Up?" (Perry) – 4:55
"Pleasantly Blue" (Perry) – 2:28
"Morphine and Chocolate" (Shaunna Hall) – 4:44
"Spaceman" (Hall, Perry) – 3:40
"Old Mr. Heffer" (Wanda Day, Hall, Christa Hillhouse, Perry, Dawn Richardson) – 2:16
"Calling All the People" (Perry) – 3:17
"Dear Mr. President" (Perry) – 4:43
"Drifting" (Perry) – 3:31
"No Place Like Home" (Day, Hall, Hillhouse, Perry) – 3:08

A very intoxicating sound...

This review is from: On How Life Is (Audio CD)

My partner purchased this CD several months ago, after it was first released. Neither one of us had heard anything about her--it was just set up at a listening station at a record store and he thought I would like it (he knows that I enjoy women who sing with lots of emotion.) The CD sat in the music rack for months before I listened to it for the first time last week. I did not see her on SNL; hear her on Rosie; nor have I ever watched any of her videos. I can honestly say that I wish I had not waited so long, because this woman is GREAT!

The beautiful thing about 'On How Life Is' is that it is truly just that--stories about life, sung by a woman with the most refreshing voice I have heard in years (and I am not one of these twenty-somethings that some reviewers here think are the only people who would find her sound refreshing...) The more I listen to her sing, the more I feel intoxicated by the sound. Unfortunately I discovered this woman after her show here in Seattle sold out, but I can only hope that she will have much future success and somehow live up to the pedestal I am placing her on.

Arkansas Traveler -- CD

Michelle Shocked

1992 Mercury Records

"Hey farmer...you been livin' here all your life? Not yet!"
, October 6, 2004
By Kenneth M. Gelwasser (Hollywood, Fl USA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Arkansas Traveler (Audio CD)

Back in the early '90's I became a fan of folk-rocker, Michelle Shocked after picking up a copy of the popular "Short, Sharp, Shocked". I loved that album as well as it's horn drenched successor "Captain Swing". But nothing prepared me for the release of her wonderful CD, "Arkanas Traveler". "Arkansas Traveler" is Michelle's homage to the 19th century musical form known as "Minstrel Music". Not many artists would have the guts to take on this music due to the racist manner (blackface makeup, derogatory humor) in which many of these songs were originaly presented over a century ago. But Michelle with both dignity and a really good sense of humor, tackled these classic songs of the American south, producing one of the best albums of her career. She gets plenty of help by being joined by a plethora of roots-music artists including the late Pops Staples, Taj Mahal, Gatemouth Brown, Doc Watson, Allison Krauss, Norman Blake, Hothouse Flowers, Uncle Tupelo ETC. With a group of journeymen such as these how could you go wrong? I love these tuneful classic songs, which can so easily get stuck in your brain. This happens everytime I hear her renditions of "Secret to a Long Life" or "Over the Waterfall". Sometimes I'll find myself singing these tunes for half the day, after hearing them. Other favorites include "Jump Jim Crow" (with it's Zippity Do-Dah ending), "Prodigal Daughter" & "Weaving Way". Finally there is the hilarious, spoken word routines of the song "Arkansas Traveler" ("Hey farmer... where does this road go to? Been livin' here all my life, it ain't gone no where yet!") I played these corny routines for my young nephews and it totally cracked them up into fits of laughter! For the longest time this CD was (criminally) out of print. It has now been re-released with crystal clear remastering and six bonus cuts featuring alternative takes and live renditions. I love this CD and highly recommend it!!

Rickie Lee Jones -- CD

Rickie Lee Jones

1979/1990 Warner Bros. Records

Amazon.com

The breezy melodies and jazz stylings of Rickie Lee Jones's debut album are usually found in the works of more mature pop artists. It's only the exuberance of Jones's often cackling voice that reminds you that a 23-year-old is at the controls. And Jones's "little girl lost" perspective, while hanging out in mid-1970s Los Angeles with neo-Beat songwriters-barroom troubadours Tom Waits and Chuck E. Weiss, makes for colorful storytelling. In fact, her tale about Weiss, "Chuck E.'s in Love," hit the Top 10. But there's a lot more elegant stuff here: "Last Chance Texaco" is a soaring ballad about automobiles and broken hearts, and the Sinatra-esque "After Hours" features a lonely Jones singing to a lamppost. --Bill Crandall

Songs written by Rickie Lee Jones, except where noted.

"Chuck E.'s In Love" 3:28
"On Saturday Afternoons In 1963" – 2:31

Blue -- CD

Joni Mitchell

1971/1990 Warner Bros. Records

Amazon.com essential recording

Joni Mitchell would go on from this '71 recording to make more popular, more ambitious, and more challenging albums, but she's never made a better one. Working with minimal accompaniment (Stephen Stills and James Taylor are two of the four sidemen), the Canadian thrush summoned an involving song cycle of romance found and lost. Though Blue is an uncommonly intimate representation, it's also astonishingly open and gracious. Songs such as "All I Want," "Carey," "California," and "A Case of You" work equally well as poetry and pop music. --Steve Stolder

All tracks composed and arranged by Joni Mitchell

Side A

"All I Want" – 3:32
"My Old Man" – 3:33
"Little Green" – 3:25

"California" – 3:48
"This Flight Tonight" – 2:50
"River" – 4:00
"A Case of You" – 4:20
"The Last Time I Saw Richard" – 4:13

One of my favorites. Dennie, did you catch all the puns in "Last Chance Texaco"?

:text-+1: :text-bravo: :text-lol:

A long stretch of headlights
Bends into I-9
Tiptoe into truck stops
And sleepy diesel eyes
Volcanoes rumble in the taxi
And glow in the dark
Camels in the driver's seat
A slow, easy mark

But you ran out of gas
Down the road a piece
Then the battery went dead
And now the cable won't reach...

It's your last chance
To check under the hood
Last chance
She ain't soundin' too good,
Your last chance
To trust the man with the star
You've found the last chance Texaco

Well, he tried to be Standard
He tries to be Mobil
He tried living in a world
And in a shell
There was this block-busted blonde
He loved her - free parts and labor
But she broke down and died
And threw all the rods he gave her

But this one ain't fuel-injected
Her plug's disconnected
She gets scared and she stalls
She just needs a man, that's all

It's her last chance
Her timing's all wrong
Her last chance
She can't idle this long
Her last chance
Turn her over and go
Pullin' out of the last chance texaco
The last chance

My last one for the evening...

This review is from: Time (The Revelator) (Audio CD)

In a lifetime of listening to music, in the wake of thousands and thousands of albums sat with, there are perhaps 50 that are so self-assured, so complete, and so beautifully executed that there is nothing to say other than... "don't let another day pass without listening to this." Finding records like this is the whole reason I listen to music in the first place.

Ten Mile Tide

2002 Ten Mile Tide

Ten Mile Tide is five-piece independent band from San Francisco that describes their sound as feel-good acoustic rock, foot-stomping folk, and beer-drenched bluegrass. The band was formed in 1999 by twin brothers Jason Munning (lead electric guitar, vocals) and Justin Munning (rhythm acoustic guitar, vocals) along with Justin's Stanford roomie Steve Kessler (fiddle). Jeff Clemetson (bass), and John Morales (drums) complete the lineup. In January, 2006 TMT was nominated for a Jammy for New Groove of the Year. In April of 2005, Ten Mile Tide was selected as the New Groove of the Month by Jambands . In the summer of 2004, Ten Mile Tide was selected as a finalist in Relix magazine's Jamoff Competition.
