Enlightenment -- CD

Van Morrison

1990 Mercury Records

Dennie adds: THIS IS A GREAT REVIEW! :eusa-clap:

The Answer to all Life's Problems is HERE!,
January 4, 2003
By D. Hawkins
This review is from: Enlightenment (Audio CD)

Most Van the Man albums have great examples of his spiritual side, but this one might have more SPIRIT than any of them. This is sadly not one of Van's most popular (based on the sales rank here), but it offers a great recipe for how to live one's life. Starting off with "Real Real Gone," he tells us "And Sam Cooke is on the radio/And the night is filled with space/And your fingertips touch my face/And I'm real real gone." This certainly illustrates the magical power that music has over us. The title track preaches for us to "Chop that wood/Carry water" since focusing on such mundance tasks is the key to being truly ALIVE. Following these two magnificent tracks, we have "So Quiet in Here" and "Avalon of the Heart." If Heaven has a waiting room, then these two songs are on constant rotation, as there is no other place these songs could have come from. Needless to say, Van's magical voice on these two songs can bring anyone with a soul to tears. Following this, there are many other wonderful songs to choose from, from "Start All Over Again" to "Memories" to the quaint song that grows on you, "In the Days Before Rock and Roll." My words have probably failed to explain exactly how transcendent this album is, but it's certainly the most undiscovered "gem" in Van's massive catalog. I am in the process of burning a CD of all my favorite Van songs. As any true fan knows, that's a pretty daunting task narrowing the best of Van down to 80 minutes, but I'm sure some songs from this CD will make the cut. To sum this album up using Van's own words from "So Quiet in Here": "This must be what paradise is like!!!"

All songs by Morrison unless noted otherwise.

"Real Real Gone" – 3:43
"Enlightenment" – 4:04
"So Quiet in Here" – 6:09
"Avalon of the Heart" – 4:45
"See Me Through" – 6:13
"Youth of 1,000 Summers" – 3:45
"In the Days Before Rock 'N' Roll" (Durcan, Morrison) – 8:13
"Start All Over Again" – 4:10
"She's My Baby" – 5:14
"Memories" – 4:14

I was itching for some new CDs so I went to FYE tonight and bought 6 CDS.

Legend - The Best of -- CD

Bob Marley and The Wailers

1984/2002 Def Jam Records

Amazon.com essential recording

Even as greatest hits packages go, this is an utter gem. Every song is inspired, in a class of its own, whether the real version of "I Shot the Sheriff," the hymnlike "No Woman, No Cry," or the sheer joy of "Jamming." Even allowing that Marley never wrote any bad material, then Legend is still the crème de la crème, the heart and soul of the Jamaican people packed into one five-inch compact disc. He was unique, and the message of this record, more than any other, is that he died far too soon. --Chris Nickson

Great Blues from a sultry singer and amazing guitarist!

This review is from: Unconditional (Audio CD)

It's been over two years since guitarist/singer Ana Popovic released her last album, but her latest, "Unconditional," has made it well worth the wait. Recorded in New Orleans, it successfully fuses classic and contemporary blues into music with high energy and lots of passion. Her guitar playing is amazing and her vocals are as smooth as honey. Soulful and virtuoso are words that come to mind when listening to her play.

The album also features the amazing slide guitar of Sonny Landreth and the talents of Jon Cleary and David Torkanowski on hammond B3 and piano, Calvin Turner on bass and Doug Belote on drums. The title track, "Unconditional," has some unbelievable guitar work but also incorporates a beautiful piano which adds depth to the song. Jason Ricci makes a guest appearance and plays the harp, adding a unique and beautiful texture to the sound. I love the backbeat drumming on "Slideshow" that has a huge, pounding bass line and delivers with nothing short of a sonic boom.

"One Room Country Shack" showcases Popovic's talent as a musician. She simply SHREDS the guitar on this song and it will leave you breathless. "Summer Rain" is another beautiful song that really shows the depth of Popovic's talents as a vocalist. She is sultry and powerful at the same time and the guitar solo somehow sounds like falling rain. If you like your blues straight ahead with touches of soulful jazz and beautifully raw vocals, you can't go wrong here. Highly recommended!

Some of the reviews here are quite funny. Some folks don't like this album because it dares to be different. It doesn't sound like the Allman Brothers or Albert King or Howlin Wolf or B.B. King or Freddie King or any other blues legend. What these other reviewers apparently fail to understand is that the Derek Trucks Band is trying to create ORIGINAL music here. Not just make an easy buck by covering songs already done by other people. Just because DT has a side gig playing in the Allman Brother's Band doesn't mean he's trying to be Duane Allman. He's trying to be Derek Trucks and I think they succeed marvelously. I love this album.

I've seen the Derek Trucks Band perform live. In fact, I stood about 15 feet in front of him recently in a small club while he played for 2 hours. You truly cannot appreciate this young man's talent until you've seen him play live. The speed and precision with which he plays slide guitar are dizzying. And his ability to switch back and forth between playing with and without the slide in the same song is amazing. One of the best measures of a musician's true talent is how well they can perform live on stage the great sounds you hear on the album. Derek Trucks live tone is every bit as wonderful as it is on the album.

No, this is not a traditional blues rock album. It's a mixture of blues, jazz, Indian, and African rhythms combined with awesome guitar playing and I think it's absolutely terrific.

A great American roots music offering. Her voice accompanied by jaw dropping guitar solos and a fierce thumping bass made me get up and buy it after hearing it while in a local book store. From the cover you would be forgiven to think that this was just another Rockabilly album, but that is not the case. Whats included here is a mixture of Rock, Blues,R'n'B, Jazz, R'n'R, Rockabilly etc with many tracks being more a fusion of these styles then of just one particular musical genre. It is this that makes it fresh and original and not just another retro 50's album.

Blue Country Heart -- CD

I assume any reader of this page will probably know who Jorma Kaukonen is. (Just in case, though: it's pronounced YORE-ma KOW-ko-nen, he used to play with the Jefferson Airplane, and he founded Hot Tuna with his pal and co-Airplaner, bassist Jack Casady.)

I don't think he's capable of recording bad music, so you can't go wrong with any of his stuff. But this CD is probably the best one he's released in two, maybe three decades.

The plot: Jorma's settin' around Fur Peace Ranch here in Ohio, playin' some old-timey country blooze with some friends. (Actually, the CD was recorded in Nashville. But there are lots of photos from the ranch, and the music has that nice front-porch-jam-among-friends feel.) The outcome: a laid-back hippie hoedown.

Still not sold? All right -- the friends Jorma is jamming with are Jerry Douglas (resophonic guitar), Sam Bush (mandolin and backing vocals), and Byron House (bass), and Bela Fleck sits in with his banjo on two of the tunes. _Any one_ of these folks would be sufficient to guarantee a maximally cool CD. But _all five together_ . . . oh, my. I'm just glad I lived to see the day, that's all.

(On the off-chance that you haven't heard of these people, search for their names at your earliest convenience and prepare to hear some of the best music you've ever heard. Also check New Grass Revival and Strength in Numbers, both of which feature some of the same personnel. While you're at it, look for David Grisman, Tony Rice, and any of the various acoustic releases by Jerry Garcia and his friends -- not only the Dead but also Almost Acoustic and Old & In The Way.)

Anyway, they just don't come any cooler than Jorma; on the Coolness Meter, he registers somewhere around Willie Nelson and J.J. Cale. He's very good at this acoustic stuff and he's been doing it for a long time. Put this baby on your CD player and set yerself down on the porch.

Breakfast In America -- CD

Supertramp

1979/1990 A&M Records
Amazon.com

After a shaky start followed by several critically acclaimed releases, the English group Supertramp hit the commercial jackpot in 1979 with Breakfast in America. The album combined the band's FM radio, AOR-rock style with an almost carnival-like nature. Breakfast gave the band major hits with "The Logical Song," "Goodbye Stranger," and "Take the Long Way Home." The plinking piano and dramatic clarinet runs of "The Logical Song" imparted a comic, yet bittersweet tone to the release as a whole. In another example of the band's devotion to alternative ways to carry their melody lines, "Goodbye Stranger" rings with some of the purest whistling ever recorded. There's also a healthy dose of cynicism running through the 10 tracks with "Just Another Nervous Wreck." --Steve Gdula

This Sarah Jarosz album (Song Up in Her Head) is rapidly becoming one of my very favorites. Certainly in the top 5 albums that I've been listening to lately, and moving up in my (relatively) short list of all-time favorites. I highly recommend this one. I can listen to it over and over, which is unusual as normally I hate repetition - partly why I have a large collection. And now even my kids are asking for it!

I believe that some people should go back to the times where this type of music was on top. Everyone loved to listen to the type of music. Well, I do. Majority of the old listeners would not mind listening to their old time favorites. I'm 24 and I still listen to them. They will always be apart of my music collection. Now I don't care what they say about the new music that replaced the beats to this soothing sound, it'll take the place of Motowns finest. Thank you for the time you have given me. Thank you.

Disco got such a bad rap after its demise, and who would be surprised? Most of the mainstream hits were cheesy imitations of the Real Thing: Leo Sayer's "You Make Me Feel Like Dancin'," Rick Dees' "Disco Duck" and so forth. Chic, however, delivered the Real Deal, offering serious grooves and memorable basslines that would be sampled by every other rapper. This hits collection is flat-out perfect. Not only do we get the hits, but they're in their full-length, 12-inch versions. That's very important for a group that was a hit in the club scene. What's to dislike about "Good Times," "I Want Your Love," or "Dance Dance Dance?" Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers were geniuses, and Tony Thompson is one of the most overlooked drummers out there. Rock conniseurs may shake their heads in contempt, but old school dance lovers will know that Chic was one of the baddest groups around. It's time to recognize!

Greatest Hits -- CD

The Lovin' Spoonful

2000 Buddha Records

The Lovin' Spoonful was one of the very first bands to take part in the folk-rock boom of the mid-1960s, creating something of an East Coast equivalent to the Byrds' seminal L.A. jangle. The original group's lineup was regrettably short-lived, all their classic material getting released on Buddha records, so the label's definitive GREATEST HITS collection presented none of the usual cross-licensing difficulties.
All the highlights of the Spoonful's '60s discography are here--the airy, transcendent pop of the jubilant "Do You Believe in Magic" and the almost Association-like "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice," the tougher rock sound of "Summer in the City," the romantic ballad "Darling Be Home Soon," and more. The rootsier side of the ensemble can be heard as well, on the likes of "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind" and "Jug Band Music." Led by John Sebastian's mellifluous voice and graceful songwriting and Zal Yanovsky's chiming guitar, the Spoonful turned out some of the most memorable singles of the '60s, and they're all right here.

God Willin & The Creek Don't Rise -- CD

Ray LaMontagne

2010 RCA Records

Grammy nominated and critically acclaimed, Ray LaMontagne returns with his anticipated fourth studio album, God Willin' & The Creek Don't Rise. Entirely self produced (for the first time) the album was recorded in two weeks at LaMontagne's home in the woods of western Massachusetts. The newly restored historic home served as a homemade recording studio for Ray and his fellow musicians. With Ray's vocals at the forefront of the songs and a loose, almost live sounding recording, the album stands as a testament to a band at the height of their powers. The newly coined 'Pariah Dogs', consists of Jay Bellarose (drums), Jennifer Condos (bass), Patrick Warren (keyboard), Eric Heywood (guitar) and Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar). Individually these musicians have contributed to the live work of such heralded musicians including Beck, Joe Henry, Tom Waits, Lucinda Wlliams, Ryan Adams and Joe Cocker to name a few of their career highlights. Together with Ray they shared a sense that the sessions for this record were rare and extraordinary.

1. "Repo Man" 6:08

In The Dark -- CD

Grateful Dead

1987 Arista Records

Amazon.com essential recording

Hardcore Deadheads always equate this 1987 comeback record with commercial acceptance and a watered-down fan base, but while those assertions are indeed accurate, step back and you'll hear an album full of strong material and equally solid, live-in-the-studio performances. It's more than coincidence that songs such as "Touch of Grey" (the band's only top 10 hit), "Hell in a Bucket," "West L.A. Fadeaway," and "Throwing Stones" all became staples of the Dead's last decade of touring. While longtime fans will probably have no use (or desire) for this release (especially since the CD version omits the brilliant "Brother Esau"), it remains one of the band's most successful studio forays and the quintessential icebreaker for newcomers. --Marc Greilsamer
Side one

"Touch of Grey" (Garcia, Hunter) – 5:47
"Hell in a Bucket" (Barlow, Weir) – 5:35
"When Push Comes to Shove" (Garcia, Hunter) – 4:05

"Throwing Stones" (Barlow, Weir) – 7:18
"Black Muddy River" (Garcia, Hunter) – 5:58
"My Brother Esau" (Barlow, Weir) - 4:20

"My Brother Esau" was omitted from the LP and CD releases of In the Dark, but was included on the cassette and on international releases.
