If you are familiar with Greg Brown, you probably are familiar with this release. If you don't have it, get it and treat yourself to an experience that take you on a journey of loves lost and loves to come. For those who are curious about Greg's work, this is an excellent place to start. There is not a bad cut here, and in particular, "Dream Cafe", "Spring Wind" and "Laughing River" are a trio of songs that somehow work some sort of magic into allowing me to see into life a bit deeper for a period of time. Two other releases that go along well with this are "Further In" and "The Poet Game."

All songs by Greg Brown.

"Just by Myself" – 4:45
"Sleeper" – 4:28
"I Don't Know That Guy" – 4:51
"So Hard" – 2:38
"You Can Watch Me" – 3:37
"Dream Cafe" – 5:55
"You Drive Me Crazy" – 4:56
"Spring Wind" – 4:32

Low Country Blues -- CD

Gregg Allman

2011 Rounder Records

A more bluesy style,
January 18, 2011
By K. Cooper
This review is from: Low Country Blues (Audio CD)

Gregg Allman has been making records both solo and with the Allman Brothers since the 1960's. He has never made an album like this before. With one original tune ("Just Another Rider") and a few familiar blues covers ("I Can't be Satisfied". "RollingStone" "Little by Little"), the main focus of this new CD is less familiar acoustic and electric blues songs.Producer T-Bone Burnett and Allman selected songs that are well suited to Allman's talents.
Gregg's voice is still in top form and he has the backing of a top notch band here, including Dr. John and Doyle Bramhall II. The backing is more sparse on this CD than a typical Allman Brothers CD, spotlighting the vocals a bit more. Of course, fans of the Allman Brothers Band and Gregg's solo work will love this and he may even make a new fans if some people who are not fans listen to "Low Country Blues".

The track listing for the record is:

1. Floating Bridge (Sleepy John Estes)

2. Little By Little (Junior Wells)

3. Devil Got My Woman (Skip James)

4. I Can’t Be Satisfied (Muddy Waters)

5. Blind Man (Bobby Bland)

6. Just Another Rider (Gregg Allman & Warren Haynes)

7. Please Accept My Love (BB King)

8. I Believe I’ll Go Back Home (Traditional)

9. Tears Tears Tears (Amos Milburn)

10. My Love is Your Love (Samuel Maghett)

11. Checking On My Baby (Otis Rush)

12. Rolling Stone (Traditional)

To Tulsa And Back -- CD

J.J. Cale

2004 Sanctuary Records

Cale, Back From Tulsa Sounding Great!
, June 22, 2004
By William Sargent (Providence, RI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: To Tulsa & Back (Audio CD)

I'd call this Cale's best since Troubador from 1976. JJ went To Tulsa And Back to record this harder-edged collection. It contains unargueably some of his best laid-back tunes, that harken back to JJ's early Shelter years albums, like Naturally, Really and Okie. JJ used some of his hometown pals to record about half of these new songs in Tulsa, and the results sounds great! "Blues For Mama" is a must for any blues fan, with its melancholy melody, moanfully wailing guitar licks and from-the-gut vocal. "New Lover" is an energetic rocker led by Cale's driving guitar, and it screams, "Oh Eric, book some studio time". "The Problem" (a political message) is destined to be a Cale classic, with his coarse whispery vocal, and acidic lead guitar, fueled along by that incredible Tulsa Sound. Aware of life on the streets, JJ gives us a view of a pair living it in "Homeless". Another favorite on this cd is "Fancy Dancer", one of those rhythmic tunes that you can't sit still to. JJ Cale delivered a gem this time... get a copy!

"My Gal" 4:23
"Chains Of Love" 3:37
"New Lover" 3:12
"I Step" 3:20
"Stone River" 3:42
"The Problem" 4:31
"Homeless" 3:25
"Fancy Dancer" 4:50
"Rio" 3:46
"These Blues" 3:49
"Moto Mouth" 3:17
"Blues For Mama" 4:07
"Another Song" 3:24

One Moment More -- CD

Mindy Smith

2004 Vanguard Records

Amazon.com

While the hype machine forever proclaims this or that new artist to be "unique," "original," or "a fresh new voice," most of the time what you hear is more of the same old, same old. Thus, it is a rare joy to hear a newcomer that actually qualifies as all of the above. Mindy Smith fits loosely in the alt-country genre but adds some distinctive touches that set her apart from the field. A residency in Nashville brings a welcome Music Row level of craftsmanship to the playing and production, while her singing and songwriting take the music to places where cliché has never been. A song like "Hurricane" has a hook Faith Hill would kill for, but tells a tale of rebirth that might prove a little raw for her emotional range. Like Julie Miller, Smith writes songs that deal with redemption and spiritual matters in a way that is powerful without being off-putting to the more secular among us. Likewise she can write about her stepmother's passing in terms general enough to make it a stirring ode to the loss of any love--and do it in a voice that could make a statue misty. Smith more than held her own on the Dolly Parton tribute, Just Because I'm a Woman, alongside the likes of Alison Krauss, Norah Jones, and Dolly herself. One Moment More proves that it was no fluke. This time believe the hype. --Michael Ross

"Come to Jesus" – 4:14
"Falling" – 3:35
"Raggedy Ann" – 4:55
"Fighting for It All" – 3:19
"Train Song" – 3:22
"It's Amazing" – 3:40
"Angel Doves" – 3:56
"Down in Flames" – 4:12
"Hurricane" – 3:33
"Hard to Know" – 3:06
"One Moment More" – 3:47
"Jolene" (Dolly Parton) – 4:20

Notes:

All songs were written by Mindy Smith except for "Jolene."
"Jolene," "Come to Jesus" and "One Moment More" were all released as singles.

The Secret Sisters -- CD

Secret Sisters Won't Be A Secret For Long!

This review is from: The Secret Sisters (Audio CD)

The debut eponymous CD from The Secret Sisters sounds like something that landed straight out of a time machine. As they said in O' Brother, Where Art Thou? it is "old timey" music; however, this is not a bad thing. It is not a coincident that T-Bone Burnett, the producer of the soundtrack for the aforementioned movie, is also listed as executive producer on this CD. When I see his name on a collection of songs, I am automatically interested. While it stands on its own, this CD stands with some of his best overseeing jobs: Elvis Costello's Secret, Profane and Sugarcane and B.B. King's One Kind Favor to name a couple.

The Secret Sisters (Laura and Lydia Rogers) will not stay a secret for long if this CD is any indication. What really makes it stand out are the vocal harmonies between the two. My favorite display is on "The One I Love Is Gone". It is a mournful bluesy lament of lost love. Lest anyone think this is a collection of downers, the next tune "My Heart Skips A Beat" is an upbeat rockabilly shuffle that avoids the trap of dripping with sunshine. I was surprised that artists as young as they were able to run the gamut of emotions without ever sound trite.

When I heard this the first time, my thoughts went to Sun Studios where Sam Phillips discovered Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis. While the recordings here are of better quality here, I thought they were stylistically consistent with that era. It's interesting how something that hearkens back so far sounds so fresh compared to all of the American Idol and Glee generated drivel. If you are looking for something different, give this a spin. Fans of that "old timey" music are sure to like it.

"Tennessee Me" – 2:28
"Why Baby Why" – 2:29
"The One I Love Is Gone" – 3:25
"My Heart Skips a Beat" – 2:22
"Something Stupid" – 2:42
"I've Got a Feeling" – 2:25
"Do You Love an Apple" – 2:44
"All About You" – 2:58
"Waste the Day" – 2:35
"Why Don't You Love Me" – 2:19
"House of Gold" – 2:57

...listen to the music, listen to the songs, listen to Karen's voice. And then try to say that they ain't great performances. ...this is a primo collection of some of the best music ever made by the duo...or by anyone else, for that matter. The Essential Toto -- CD

Toto

They Won't Be Over Us, August 5, 2005
By Michael Kerner "Michael Kerner" (Brooklyn, New York U.S.A.) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Essential Toto (Audio CD)

The 1970's and 1980's ereally was the era of guilty pleasures. I say that because they are still enjoyable today simply as a much as they were back then. Yet, with acts like R.E.O. Speedwagon, Journey, and Foreigner, there are very few that haven't been shown with a decent recognition in greatest hits. Arguably, Toto is just one of those acts that have not had a definitive collection. For a group of studio musicians that have made great pop gems awhile ago, they are still just as enjoyable now as the much as the 1980's. Hopefully this generation who happens tpo be interested in acts like Britney Spears, and Jennifer Lopez can consider enjoying this collection of songs.

The Essential Toto is a single disc collection of the groups biggest tracks from the 70's and 80's. While there have been budget collection of Toto and their music, this is their first major definitive collection in almost fifteen years. Each songs sounds much better than it was back then. There are just so many guilty pleasures that are highlighted here on this collection like Africa, I Won't Hold You Back, the soulful I'll Be Over You, 99, Rosanna, and Hold The Line to just name a few. This is a delightful retrospective for new listeners, but die hard Toto fans might arguably feel a bit dissapointed that classics like Hollyanna, Stranger In Town, and Til The End could've also been highlighted here on this collection as well.

While The Essential Toto doesn't seem as definitive for hard core Toto fans, they just might want to consider this package as well as their 2003 love songs album as well. But for anybody who enjoys Toto but doesn't have a album or recording of the guilty pleasures, this would be a fairly well put collection for anybody that won't hold you back.
