Immerse yourself in the incredible genius of Mark O'Connor and his amazing chameleon-like creative ability to tease so many different moods and styles from his violin. If you like Cajun music - this is for you. If you like Western Swing - this is for you. If you like foot tapping fiddle with a Celtic slant - then this is for you! Classical? Jazz? Blues? Country Rock? Then yeah - you guessed it - this is for you! This is an absolutely fantastic album - a brilliant collection of melodies that bring together some of today's greatest violinists. Pure Genius.

Well, I'm embarrassingly late to this party! Her singing floored me, then I noticed tape hiss in the recording (which otherwise is great), started reading the liner notes, and learned she'd died in 1996! This disk's tracks are actually taken from several sources, and some sound cleaner than others.
I'll probably start adding the rest of her back catalog to my collection, any recommendations?

As we always say, Better late than never!

I really like her "Live at Blues Alley" album, but you really can't go wrong with any of Eva's music.

I do notice more and more compilations coming out over the years, if you can stick to her albums, I think you're better off, if collecting her catalog.

Congratulations Botch and welcome to the Party, she is something!

Short Trip Home -- CD

Joshua Bell & Edgar Meyer with Sam Bush & Mike Marshall

1999 Columbia Records

This recording was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for "Best Classical Crossover Album."

Bassist Edgar Meyer, equally at home in Nashville or Lincoln Center, likes to invite his classical friends to mix with his country friends in performances of his hybrid brand of bluegrass chamber music. In SHORT TRIP HOME, he has assembled a team long on bow arms. Featured are guitarist Mike Marshall and mandolin player Sam Bush, both of whom double on fiddle, and star violinist Joshua Bell, the name above the title, who not only fits well into the proceedings, but soars right above them when the occasion calls for it. What makes this disc more rewarding than many crossover assemblages is that Meyer is not crossing over, this melt of classical and country, Bill Monroe and Béla Bartók, is exactly what he writes and writes most successfully. At its best, such as in 'Death by Triple Fiddle' or the extended four movement 'Concert Duo' it can be mighty satisfying stuff, whether heard from an aisle seat or a front porch swing.

Now That I've Found You - A Collection -- CD

Alison Krauss

1995 Rounder Records

Amazon.com essential recording

A poll-winning fiddler since her teens, Alison Krauss was an established bluegrass star when her label persuaded her to step out from her usual projects with Union Station, her crack band, and sanction this compilation of various band and solo guest performances. The ploy worked, yielding a wonderful, odds-beating crossover hit with Krauss's cover of "Baby, Now That I've Found You," a carousing late-'60s pop chant transformed into a delicate, vulnerable declaration of love. Focusing on Krauss's lovely, yearning soprano, the track elevated the musician above her resolutely democratic role in her quintet, catapulting Krauss to the biggest bluegrass success story in over 30 years. Krauss has stayed true to her bluegrass roots, as well as to Union Station, but this cross-section of contemporary bluegrass songs, joyous gospel, and canny rock covers testifies to the young artist's luminous appeal. --Sam Sutherland

Kind of Blue -- Remastered CD

Miles Davis

1959/1997 Columbia Legacy Edition

Amazon.com essential recording

This is the one jazz record owned by people who don't listen to jazz, and with good reason. The band itself is extraordinary (proof of Miles Davis's masterful casting skills, if not of God's existence), listing John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on saxophones, Bill Evans (or, on "Freddie Freeloader," Wynton Kelly) on piano, and the crack rhythm unit of Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Coltrane's astringency on tenor is counterpoised to Adderley's funky self on alto, with Davis moderating between them as Bill Evans conjures up a still lake of sound on which they walk. Meanwhile, the rhythm partnership of Cobb and Chambers is prepared to click off time until eternity. It was the key recording of what became modal jazz, a music free of the fixed harmonies and forms of pop songs. In Davis's men's hands it was a weightless music, but one that refused to fade into the background. In retrospect every note seems perfect, and each piece moves inexorably towards its destiny. --John Szwed

All songs composed by Miles Davis (see content section for more information). Only six complete takes of the five tunes on the album exist, indicated by the song numbers.

"So What" – 9:22
"Freddie Freeloader" – 9:46
"Blue in Green" – 5:37
"All Blues" – 11:33
"Flamenco Sketches" – 9:26

The Complette Village Vanguard Recordings, 1961 Disc 1 -- Remastered 20bit K2 CD

Bill Evans

1961/2005 Riverside Records

Amazon.com

Bill Evans, with virtuoso bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, reinvented the jazz piano trio, creating stunning contrapuntal dialogues that merged luminous lyricism with layers of complex, elusive harmonies, its moments of limpid beauty suddenly giving way to surging rhythms. The trio's finest recorded moments, these performances were captured just 10 days before LaFaro's death in a car accident. The original releases--Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby--are celebrated masterpieces. This three-CD set is a brilliant reissue--almost a revision--of that material, with superb sound from the newly remastered original tapes and all of the music presented in the sequence of the original five sets, adding a previously unissued take of "Gloria's Step," spoken introductions, and the band's incidental conversation. For those who know this music, it's a chance to hear it in a fresh way; for new listeners, it will come as a revelation at a bargain price. --Stuart Broomer

Drive -- CD

Alan Jackson

2002 Arista Records

One of the best releases of 2002, January 15, 2002
By Gennie Bailey (Savannah, Georgia United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Drive (Audio CD)
It's safe to say that Alan Jackson's new release, "Drive", is going to be a huge hit in 2002. If you're already a fan of Jackson, you know pretty much what to expect...some good ole country music that doesn't stray from it's roots. You've got everything from great love songs ("Once In A Lifetime Love") to the obligatory car song ("Drive" & "First Love") to the fun ("Work In Progress" & "I Slipped and Fell In Love"). There's also an awesome duet with the King of Country himself, George Strait, called "Designated Drinker", about a pair of drinking buddies trying to get over a gal who's broken their hearts. There's not a bad track on the CD, which is not something you can say for most of what's released today in country music. There's something for everyone here.

The following are my favorite tracks on the CD:

"I'm A Little Bluer Than That": What a song!!! This is bound to be a hit on radio, if it's ever released. Alan sings of a man who can't seem to get over a woman who's left him for another man. He explains that even the saddest songs on the radio aren't as blue as he is.

"Bring On The Night": Alan has such a knack for singing a country love song and this is one the best I've heard him sing yet. It's a song about a man coming home after a long, hard day to the woman he loves.

And finally...."Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)": During the 2001 CMA's Alan Jackson premiered this song in tribute to the victims of September 11th. It's safe to say that there wasn't a dry eye in the nation that night after he sang it. Not only are you getting the original album cut, you're also getting that famous live version from the CMA's. There've been tons of tribute songs released since the tragedies but this is far superior to any that I've ever heard. It makes you think REAL hard about what matters in your life and how fragile life really is.

If you're going to buy just one new country CD this year, make sure it's Alan Jackson's "Drive". What makes "Drive" so enjoyable for me is that Alan isn't trying to be something he's not. He's the same down-home, layed-back guy he's always been and it shows in his music. He isn't out to bring new fans to country music or break new chart records. Instead he focuses all of his efforts on making good music. This has got "Album Of The Year" written ALLLL over it!!!

Gennie Bailey-Rogers

All songs written by Alan Jackson except where noted.

"Drive (For Daddy Gene)" – 4:02
"A Little Bluer Than That" (Mark Irwin, Irene Kelley) – 2:54
"Bring On the Night" (Jackson, Charlie Craig, Keith Stegall) – 4:04
"Work in Progress" - 4:07

"Once in a Lifetime Love" – 3:25
"When Love Comes Around" – 3:07
"I Slipped and Fell in Love" (Harley Allen, John Wiggins) – 2:55

I'm listening to Disc #2, it ends with the"new release" "Hole In The World"....

In 2003, the Eagles released a new greatest hits album The Very Best of the Eagles. The two-disc compilation was the first that encompassed their entire career, from Eagles to The Long Run. The album also included a new single, the September 11-themed "Hole in the World". The album debuted at #3 on the Billboard charts and eventually gained triple platinum status.

The Very Best of -- 2 CD Set

Eagles

2003 Warner Bros. Records

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Very Best of" that actually is,
June 4, 2005
By Gavin Mack "Entertainment Junkie" (Carlsbad, NM) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eagles : The Very Best Of (2CD) (Audio CD)

After years of putting out "Greatest Hits" and "Best of..." packages, the record companies are now having to resort to greater hyperbole to sell the collections. The current trend of "The Very Best of..." sets is, in most cases, just another issue of the same old stuff that has, at least usually, been remastered. That is not the case with this set.

The Eagles are as much of an emblem of the American '70's as the Beatles were of the '60's. Each album that was released showed a band that was changing and maturing, both as musicians and as songwriters. By the time they got to the end of their run with "The Long Run" (no pun intended), they moved as far from their roots as the Beatles had in 1969. And like the Beatles, it was all good.

This collection manages to showcase this transformation in elegant style, taking the best from every album. There are at least 3 songs from each of their studio albums with "On the Border", "Hotel California", and "The Long Run" each contributing 6. The lone selection from their 1980 live album is also the only reason to own it, "Seven Bridges Road". Also included are the two best new songs from "Hell Freezes Over" and their post 9-11 tune, "Hole In The World".

Greatest Hits collections are seldom satisfying to the more than casual fan, leaving those of us who delve deep into back catalogs the desire to go and get more. The remarkable thing about this set is that over the course of two discs, a great band's career is effectively and satisfyingly summarized, leaving very little for further investigation that is truly of note. Which is not to say that this is all that the Eagles were. It is to say, however, that for everyone from the curious to the hardcore fan, this is a collection worth having.

Meet Me At Midnight -- CD

Maria Muldaur

1994 Black Top Records

Maria's classic tribute to Memphis

After the rootsy Louisiana Love Call gained adulation from critics and fans alike, Maria decided to follow her tribute to New Orleans with an album dedicated to the music of Memphis, particularly soul and blues. In doing so, she honed in on the theme of love, both the agony and the ecstasy, and its overriding importance to Southern music. The result was the masterful Meet Me At Midnite, which features guest vocals from famed Hi Records soul singer Ann Peebles.

Teaser & The Firecat -- CD

Cat Stevens

1971/1990 A&M Records

Amazon.com essential recording

The third album Cat Stevens put out in a 15-month burst that began in the summer of 1970 with Mona Bone Jakon, Teaser and the Firecat is where the enigmatic folk-pop idol crested commercially, if not artistically. Its immediate predecessor, Tea for the Tillerman, possesses an air of mystery and unforced whimsy that proved impossible for Stevens to replicate. That said, the singer-songwriter had it in him to pull together a captivating collection that boasted two of the biggest hits of his meteoric, if self-inhibited, career--"Peace Train" and the sublime hymn "Morning Has Broken." "The Wind," "If I Laugh," and "Moonshadow" are every bit as tuneful and appealing as the hits, while "Rubylove," "How Can I Tell You," and "Bitterblue" would be standouts on Stevens's less accomplished later albums. In fact, only the bellicose social statements "Changes IV" and "Tuesday's Dead" ring hollow. --Steven Stolder

Side one

"The Wind" – 1:42
"Rubylove" – 2:37
"If I Laugh" – 3:20
"Changes IV" – 3:32
"How Can I Tell You" – 4:24

Side two

"Tuesday's Dead" – 3:36
"Morning Has Broken" (Traditional, arr. Stevens; words Eleanor Farjeon) – 3:20
"Bitterblue" – 3:12
"Moonshadow" – 2:52
"Peace Train" – 4:04

I think I'll end the evening with a little "September Song" and "Moonlight In Vermont"...
