Irreplaceable -- CD

George Benson

2004 GRP Records

Amazon.com

With tunes like "Softly as a Morning Sunrise" and "Arizona Sunrise," George Benson has delivered his best pure smooth-jazz jams in many years. Most of the album, however, caters to the urban-contemporary/R&B crowd. Benson is in great voice, often adapting the rapid hip-hop meter used by modern R&B singers like R. Kelly and Joe, the latter of whom co-wrote two tracks here ("Black Rose" and "Missing You"). The only vocal track that comes close to jazz is "Stairway to Love." Benson does some octave picking on his creative instrumental reading of Luther Vandross's "Take You Out," but like much of the rest of the album, the tune was meant for R&B fans. The outstanding vocal talents of Andrea Simmons ("Cell Phone") and Cameroonian Richard Bona ("Strings of Love") also deserve mention. --Mark Ruffin

The Best of.... -- CD

Hiroshima

1994 Epic Records

Truly different in the jazz arena, July 27, 2000
By Michael J Harrington (Phoenix, Arizona USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best of Hiroshima (Audio CD)

My wife and I just saw them a few weeks back, and this CD captures the energy of the band (Black and White is great, but a bit to smooth-jazzed-out). These guys are great, as I have been following them since their first CD. Mind you, as most 'best ofs', there is some critical bits missing, however the record company did a decent job on this one...Their sound is very unique, however is not totally East or West - their blend of the elements of both is infectious! If you want to round out your jazz collection, or just get something different from all the smooth jazz bs that is out there (eg Kenny G), try this one out - I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Y Seis Del Solar -- CD

Ruben Blades

1987 Elektra/Asylum Records

A great effort for an ambicious project, August 22, 2001
By José André - See all my reviews
This review is from: Agua De Luna (Audio CD)

This CD contains four (from eight) songs that are certanly ones of the most beautiful Blade's songs. I consider this CD does not contain typical music from Blades, and if you expect to find music like "Maestra Vida", "Buscando Am'rica", "Pedro Navaja" or "Camaleon", certanly you are goint to be surprised. This is a very original work that does not seem to be like others Blade's ones.
"Ojos de perro azul", one from the eight CD songs, you can also find it in "Rubén Blades y Son del Solar...Live!" CD, it is a good version, too. And, If you are looking for a Ruben Blades overview work, you can strat with that CD: It is a good live recording one. But, don't fotget to return to this one.

Track Listing:

Side A:
1. Isabel
2. No Te Duermas (Don't Fall Asleep)
3. Blackaman (Blackaman)
4. Ojos De Perro Azul (Eyes Of A Blue Dog)

Side B:
1. Claro Obscuro (Twilight)
2. Laura Farina (Laura Farina)
3. La Cita (The Appointment)
4. Agua De Luna (Moon Water)

I stumbles on this disc in the bargain bin. I like it a lot. Smooth with a little pop. It sounds like a mix of Maroon Five and Jomiriquai (sp?).

Buena Vista Social Club Presents Ibrahim Ferrer -- CD

Ibrahim Ferrer

1999 World Circuit/Nonesuch Records

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

Picking up where Buena Vista Social Club left off, BVSC Presents Ibrahim Ferrer soothes with the hushed romanticism of Cuba's yesteryear while boasting the talents of one of its greatest singers, Ibrahim Ferrer. Again there's an all-star lineup of musicians led by pianist Rubén González and singer Omara Portuondo creating music at the renowned Egrem studios, whose live room brings the slow lucidity and intense vigor of the Cuban classics to life. --Karen K. Hugg

Amazon.com

It should never cease to amaze how spry and dramatically potent a force is the Buena Vista Social Club. The group--really a gaggle of aging Cuban maestros brought together for stunning all-star performances--keeps its footing in Cuban dance music at the same time as it revels in the lax tempo of layered hand percussion and traditional rhythms. Ibrahim Ferrer stepped to the international fore as the vocalist on the eponymous BVSC CD in 1997 and here furthers his already-obvious command of everything from sultry, horn-swaying ballads to gritty son tunes like "Mamí Me Gustá." Ferrer's tattered vocal inflections shape the more rollicking tunes so their texture is palpable, especially when belted in antiphonal give-and-takes with the rest of the huge band he totes along here. A 15-member-strong string section steps forward on the bolero tracks, which send off a smoldering passion that's startling in light of the BVSC's heightened, horn-charged charts. But the rich string passages color songs in wide brush strokes, which is to say that they heighten the passion to no end. Ferrer's debut might come in his twilight years, but it's a majorly luminous event. --Andrew Bartlett

The New Edge -- CD

Acoustic Alchemy

Rich, technical, & soulful... musicians will appreciate this, September 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: New Edge (Audio CD)

I have all their albums to date, except for their newest release (May 1998) and without a doubt in my mind, this is their best over all album. Especially when you read the liner notes do you appreciate the meaning behind the music, as well as the experience and creativity of these musicians. Truly, this album would be appreciated by all, but especially by musicians themselves. It's a pity we lost Nick Webb during the production of their latest album.

Great Gonzos -- CD

Jerry Jeff Walker

1991 MCA Records

Amazon.com essential recording

It's ironic that the man who made his reputation by writing "Mr. Bojangles," one of the most enduring and oft-covered tunes of the late 20th century, succeeded in his career as a performer by singing the works of others, but that's the case. Walker has always been a fine judge of material, and over the years, picked up on some great stuff, such as Billy Joe Shaver's "Old Five and Dimers Like Me," Guy Clark's "Desperados Waiting for the Train" and "L.A. Freeway," Gary Nunn's "London Homesick Blues," Ray Wiley Hubbard's "Up Against the Wall Redneck," and Rusty Weir's "Don't It Make You Wanna Dance." This set gathers those remarkable cuts together with some of Walker's own songs, such as the party anthem "Sangria Wine," "Railroad Lady" (written with Jimmy Buffett), and, of course, "Bojangles." Great Gonzos gives you the flavor and the laid-back aesthetic of Jerry Jeff's seminal work of the '70s. There's more to the story, but this is where it all began. --Daniel Durchholz
