Red Headed Stranger

Willie Nelson

1975 Columbia Records

Amazon.com essential recording

Though this 1975 album cost Willie only $20,000 to record, it handed him the success he'd craved after years as a hit songwriter and modestly successful singer. By blending originals and vintage material, he created a timeless Western saga, one that originally left Columbia Records, who'd guaranteed him artistic control, skeptical. The label's doubts, amplified by the fact that Nelson had recorded the album in Texas with only his seven-piece touring band, evaporated after the album and two singles, "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" and "Remember Me," became huge hits and launched Willie into the stratosphere. This enhanced version preserves the original sequence, adding four bonus tracks. One, a brief snippet of Bach's "Minuet in G" from the 1986 Red Headed Stranger film, is inconsequential. Three more, from the 1975 sessions, are enjoyable covers of Hank Williams's "I Can't Help It If I'm Still in Love with You," Bob Wills's "A Maiden's Prayer," and Pee Wee King's "Bonaparte's Retreat," footnotes to the original but welcome nonetheless. --Rich Kienzle

Best music I've ever heard!, May 9, 2009

This review is from: Shadow of Your Smile (Spec Packaging) (Audio CD)

I bought this music on vinyl when it first came out, and I've been listening to it for over forty years (where did the time go?) As has been said about other achievements, this is (to paraphrase) a musical experience that is appropriate for all times and places. Of course I can name other music of all styles that touch my heart, but I defy anyone to find anything more intensely "human" than these few songs. If you are human, you will never want to part with the sound, the emotions, the simple perfection of these works of art.

"The Shadow of Your Smile" (Johnny Mandel, Paul Francis Webster) – 2:31
"(Take Me to) Aruanda" (Norman Gimbel, Carlos Lyra, Geraldo Vandre) – 2:30
"Manhã de Carnaval" (Luiz Bonfá, Antonio Maria) – 1:57
"Fly Me to the Moon" (Bart Howard) – 2:22
"The Gentle Rain" (Bonfá, Matt Duby) – 2:26
"Non-Stop to Brazil" (Bonfá, Duby, Gimbel) – 2:27
"O Ganso" (Bonfá) – 2:09
"Who Can I Turn To? (When Nobody Needs Me)" (Leslie Bricusse, Anthony Newley) – 2:10

Latino America -- Remastered 2 CD Set

Gato Barbieri

1987 Impulse Records

Released in the wake of the commercial success of his comeback, Que Pasa, Latino America is a double-disc that combines Gato Barbieri's first two albums for a major label. Both records were recorded in the early '70s, largely in Brazil and Argentina, and they have been remastered by Ed Michel, the original producer of these sessions. In addition to all of the material from the two albums -- including four tracks that have been restored to thier full extended length -- Latino America contains five previously unreleased tracks. Barbieri's smooth fusion of jazz and South American rhythms have rarely sounded as fresh or alive as they do here, making it one of the more vital collections in his catalog. ~ Leo Stanley

Bossa Nova Stories -- CD

Eliane Elias

2009 Blue Note Records

Eliane Elias returns to the music of her native Brazil with this collection of bossa nova favorites, though there are a few American standards and pop songs recast as bossa novas as well. The pianist has grown in confidence as a vocalist over the course of several CDs, developing a sexy yet never overdone style that beautifully complements the music. With her husband Marc Johnson (who has also been her longtime bassist of choice), drummer Paulo Braga, either Oscar Castro-Neves or Ricardo Vogt on acoustic guitar, and a pair of guests, Elias proves herself as a talented singing pianist, effortlessly switching between English and Portuguese lyrics. Some of the tracks add string orchestrations, yet they never overwhelm the arrangements. Highlights include the easygoing rendition of "The More I See You," the relaxed and sensual treatment of "Estate (Summer)" (which adds Toots Thielemans on harmonica), "I'm Not Alone (Who Loves You?)" (which includes composer Ivan Lins in a vocal duet with Elias), and a surprisingly effective setting of Stevie Wonder's "Superwoman" (with Thielemans making another guest appearance). Eliane Elias remains one of the top bossa nova interpreters, in addition to her skills in many other jazz styles. ~ Ken Dryden

Anyone who is a fan of "A Certain Mr. Jobim", "Wave", "Urubu" or any of the other joint efforts by Tom Jobim and Claus Ogerman (arranger), will want to add this album to their collection of Jobim recordings. Beautiful orchestral arrangements--the kind for which Ogerman never disappoints. There are some very moving tracks here--enough that it is difficult for me to single out a favorite track--and I don't know how anyone could not enjoy listening to every minute of this CD.

Dreams - The Ultimate Corrs Collection -- CD

The Corrs

2006 Atlantic/Rhino Records

Corr Blimey!, December 1, 2006
By Amanda Richards (Georgetown, Guyana) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Dreams: The Ultimate Corrs Collection (Thai) (Audio CD)

This compilation album from the mega-talented Corr Family Singers (as opposed to the Von Trapp Family Singers of course) is their second "hits" collection, but the two albums are different enough to justify getting both if you're a Corrs fan.

Jim, Sharon, Caroline and Andrea Corr (thought I'd list Jim first for a change) play almost every musical instrument known to man (or woman) between them, including the tin whistle (Andrea) and the bodhran (Caroline), giving them a very distinctive sound that you can pick out across a crowded room.

This CD has twenty tracks, only eight of which can be found on "The Best of the Corrs" and most of the eight are remixed and tweaked for a whole new sound. Fourteen of their singles are included, the lead off single from this CD being a remix of "Goodbye" from the album "Borrowed Heaven"

Other tracks of special interest are the radio mix of "Dreams" (written by Stevie Nicks and made famous by Fleetwood Mac); "When the Stars Go Blue" a live performance of the Ryan Adams song, featuring Bono; perennial favorite "Breathless", and the classic "Ruby Tuesday" featuring Ron Wood from the "Live in Dublin" album.

There are also two instrumentals, "Haste to the Wedding" (fans of the kid's group "The Wiggles" will remember this one) and "Toss the Feathers".

Recommended for Corrs fans everywhere to keep us going until a new album is released.

The Cars -- CD

The Cars

1978/1990 Elektra Records

Amazon.com essential recording

American art-rock was often stilted and lacking in humor until the New Wave arrived. Liberated by the influence of the Velvet Underground, Roxy Music and punk-era fellow travelers like Blondie and Suicide, the Cars methodically linked hookiness (enough to produce three hit singles and several other FM favorites from this debut album) and at least one raised eyebrow. The result still plays as a rock & roll classic. And if charm wasn't their aim, the fact is, it's undeniable. --Rickey Wright

If you like to listen to the Salvation Army Band on a cold, wintry evening on a city street corner at Christmas (and who doesn't?), then this outstanding selection of Yuletide favorites is for you. The ensemble obviously enjoyed these recording sessions, for the playing is topnotch, without even the slightest suggestion of routine. The sound is also impressive, given the recording comes from the late 1960's. Most of the selections last less than two minutes, so the music never outstays its welcome. Highly recommended!

A Christmas Together

John Denver & The Muppets

1979 RCA Records

Better known is the soundtrack album of the same name, which featured thirteen tracks of traditional Christmas carols and original songs. This album, originally released on RCA Records in October 1979, was re-released on Denver's own Windstar label in 2000 as an abridged ten-track version; the original full-length CD was subsequently re-released in its entirety in 2006. (The previously missing tracks are "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "When the River Meets the Sea", and "Little Saint Nick".) In addition, all album versions of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" differ from the version featured in the TV special, as does their rendition of "Christmas is Coming".

A sheet music edition was also released containing most of the songs and musical scores from the special.

This is the tracklisting for the full version of the soundtrack.

My children and I loved this album back in the '80's....It is full of heartwarming songs, my favorite being "Happy Christmas Eve," by Dave Hanner, who is from Pittsburgh and half of the Corbin Hanner band. Another favorite is "Little One," and we just loved "Christmas Carol." Great country harmony, but definitely appealing to non-country fans.

Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer

The Original Gene Autry Hit Version

Design Records - Stereo

I did not know this.....

Rudolph first appeared in a 1939 booklet written by Robert L. May and published by Montgomery Ward. :text-tmi:

The story is owned by The Rudolph Company, L.P. and has been adapted in numerous forms including a popular song, a television special, and a feature film. Character Arts, LLC manages the licensing for the Rudolph Company, L.P. Although the story and song are not public domain, Rudolph has become a figure of Christmas folklore.

Robert L. May created Rudolph in 1939 as an assignment for Montgomery Ward. The retailer had been buying and giving away coloring books for Christmas every year and it was decided that creating their own book would save money. May considered naming the reindeer "Rollo" and "Reginald" before deciding upon using the name "Rudolph".[2] In its first year of publication, 2.4 million copies of Rudolph's story were distributed by Montgomery Ward. The story is written as a poem in the meter of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas". "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" is loved by millions and still selling copies. Publication and reprint rights for the book "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" are controlled by Pearson Plc.

May's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, decided to adapt the story of Rudolph into a song. Marks (1909–1985), was a radio producer and wrote several popular Christmas songs. He was born in a New York City suburb and graduated from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, before traveling to Paris to study music. He had a heroic World War II combat record, winning the Bronze Star and four battle stars.

The song was first sung commercially by crooner Harry Brannon on New York city radio in early November 1949, before Gene Autry released it on November 25, and has since filtered into the popular consciousness.

Nat King Cole Sings/ George Shearing Plays with the Quintet and String Choir

1962 Capitol Records - SW 1675

It would be difficult to think of a more perfectly matched pair than this. Shearing and Cole had so much in common--both were brilliant pianists, both had combined good jazz with popular success. They were even born in the same year. Nat Cole's velvet voice sounds even better with the rhythmic spice of Shearing's quintet, plus strings and percussion. The numbers on this 1961 album are all superb examples of classic American song, by such composers as Duke Ellington, Jerome Kern, and Matt Dennis. Each one is given a fresh and original treatment by arranger Ralph Carmichael. One of the tracks, "Let There Be Love," went on to become a hit single. The overall impression is of emotional warmth beneath a cool, elegant surface. Not surprisingly, Shearing still cherishes this album as one of his favorites in a long career. All that plus three bonus tracks. Unmissable. --Dave Gelly

This review is from: Abandoned Luncheonette (Audio CD)

"Abandoned Luncheonette" features the kind of music at which Daryl & John are most adept-Philly Soul. All the songs here are excellent, with the cream of the crop being "When The Morning Comes", "Las Vegas Turnaround", "I'm Just A Kid (Don't Make Me Feel Like A Man)", the title track, "Lady Rain" and "Laughing Boy". "Everytime I Look At You" is the most soulful track on this CD, which has a "hillbilly" banjo and violin-laden instrumental at the end. This is probably as close to country that H & O ever got! This has to be the best CD in their entire catalog. Oh, and "Abandoned Luncheonette" also contains their first hit single, "She's Gone", which appeared on the Billboard charts on two separate occasions. If you are a fan of soul and/or pop music, you can't go wrong here. Please buy this CD!

"When The Morning Comes" (Daryl Hall) – 3:12
"Had I Known You Better Then" (John Oates) – 3:22
"Las Vegas Turnaround (The Stewardess Song)" (Oates) – 2:57

"I'm Just A Kid (Don't Make Me Feel Like A Man)" (Oates) – 3:20

"Lady Rain" (Hall, Oates) – 4:26
