Fearless Leader -- Remastered 6 CD Box Set

John Coltrane

2006 Prestige Records
Amazon.com

Younger fans may think John Coltrane can't possibly have recorded everything on this six-box Prestige collection in only a year and a half--the first session being in May 1957, the last in December 1958. These days, even the most prolific artists are lucky if they get to record once a year. But these chronologically ordered standards and bop-school exercises, a good chunk of which was released years after the fact, flowed at a time when albums were only beginning to become artful Albums and spending time in the studio was how artists developed. Recorded during the same period as Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane: Live at Carnegie Hall, one of a pair of 2005 discoveries that repolished Coltrane's legend, the music has its inconsistencies and misfires. In the company of such players as pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, trumpeters Wilbur Harden and Freddie Hubbard and drummer Arthur Taylor, Coltrane was still working out his own sound on tenor saxophone--the revolutionary chord progressions of "Giant Steps" and incantatory preachings of "A Love Supreme" were still to come. But even the subpar performances are lifted by his remarkable streams of invention, sustained urgency and surpassing blend of power and beauty. The settings are mostly straight-ahead quartets and quintets, but there are also memorable trio performances such as "Trane's Slo Blues" and an invigorating sextet with baritone saxophonist Sahib Shihab. Marking what would have been Coltrane's 80th birthday, Fearless Leader is the first of three planned box sets to document his Prestige recordings, on which he also was featured as a sideman and all-star group stalwart. For those who care, the packaging and liner coverage is subpar. --Lloyd Sachs

Missing...Presumed Having A Good Time -- CD :handgestures-thumbup: :handgestures-thumbup:

The Notting Hillbillies

1990 Warner Bros. Records

The Notting Hillbillies was a country music project formed by Mark Knopfler, who was then lead guitarist and singer of the Dire Straits, with Brendan Croker, Steve Phillips, and Knopfler's bandmate Guy Fletcher. They made just one album, Missing...Presumed Having a Good Time that was released in 1990, before returning to concentrate on their main bands. The Notting Hillbillies have been reunited several times for charity gigs. In May 1997 the Hillbillies went on an 11 show tour in UK.

In 1993, two shows were performed, both without Guy Fletcher.

The Town & Country Club in Leeds on July 3 only featured the Knopfler-Croker-Philips trio. The set list included the only known live performances of two Dire Straits songs : "Ticket To Heaven" and "How Long". The Notting Hillbillies had previously performed "When It Comes To You" in 1990, before it was actually recorded and issued by Dire Straits on their final album On Every Street, in 1991.

The City Hall in Newcastle on July 6 featured for the one and only time Alan Clark on keyboard. Ed Bicknell and Marcus Cliffe were also present. This was the last time that Clark played with Knopfler within a full band.

Nobody Left To Crown -- CD :handgestures-thumbup:

Richie Havens

Richie Havens is back..., September 26, 2008
By B. Gass (Des Moines, IA USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Nobody Left to Crown (Audio CD)

Nobody left to Crown is yet again another classic album with a modern twist. Usually it's very hard for classic artist to come out with new albums that fuse modern sound and technology, as well as their classic sound (ex. The Who's "Endless Wire" and CSNY's "Deja Vue Live" both in my opinion were awful considering the groups that put them together). "Crown" is full of new songs with Havens classic sound. With the covering of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" you get the best of a classic song with a completely different sound. This album is a must own for all Havens fans, and would be a great way for new fans to discover Richie Havens classic sound and musical genius.

On How Life Is -- CD :handgestures-thumbup:

Macy Gray

1999 Epic Records

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

Gray starts from a solid foundation of retro funk and soul and builds on it by adding hip-hop signifiers and modern studio techniques. The result is one of the better debuts of the year, thanks to Gray's blunt proclamations ("I've committed murder... and I don't feel bad about it") and inimitable vocal phrasing. On How Life Is offers the sass of a '20s blueswoman plus the don't-mess-with-me strength of a 21st-century R&B icon-in-the-making. --Keith Moerer

Why Can't We Be Friends -- 24k Gold CD :handgestures-thumbup:

War

1975/1995 Avenue Gold Collection

Amazon.com

The title song remains the obvious hit and standout track on War's sixth album. Inspired by a fight that broke out in the audience before the group mounted the stage, "Why Can't We Be Friends?" became a Top 10 hit on both R&B and pop charts, as did the followup, "Low Rider." Another highlight is "Don't Let No One Get You Down," an upbeat, self-help message song. The rest of the album focuses on War's patented East L.A. sound, heavy with percussion, spiced with staccato bursts of horns and Lee Oskar's harmonica flares, filled with optimstic lyrics and soulful vocals, and includes the extended jam of "Heartbeat." If you like the low-rider sound that War pioneered, this is a great record for cruising or partying. --Tom Vickers

Rock N Roll Jesus -- CD :handgestures-thumbup:

Kid Rock

2007 Atlantic Records

Amazon.com

Kid Rock maintains a remarkable propensity for wearing his contradictions on his sleeve, and more than anything he's previously released, Rock n Roll Jesus finds fuel in unresolved opposites. Is he a hard-core chauvinist ("Half Your Age") or a would-be gentlemen ("When U Love Someone")? Is he a God-fearing everyman ("Blue Jeans and a Rosary") or a bohemian hero ("So Hott")? These questions are nothing new, even if the album at hand takes them to freshly delirious extremes. Ever since he first began shedding his rap/rock posture to be the next Ted Nugent, Kid Rock has constructed his public persona out of full-frontal ambivalence: race, class, sex, religion, money, whatever it takes. This album's bookends--the title song and "bonus" track, "Lowlife (Living the Highlife)"--demonstrate all this irreconcilable nonsense in no uncertain terms, but all his polar wobbling is at least stabilized by a firm commitment to southern-styled rock, tinged at times with gospel, blues, a lingering need to rap ("Sugar"), and a rare, soul-fed instrumental jambalaya ("New Orleans"). In the end, Kid Rock may be a remarkable self-promoter, but a musical Messiah he is not. --Jason Kirk

Waiting For Columbus -- Deluxe Edition 2 CD Set :handgestures-thumbup: :handgestures-thumbup:

Little Feat

1978/2002 Warner Bros. Records

Amazon.com essential recording

Few rock concert documents can match this 1978 live album for sheer musicianship, or for its full-blooded representation of one of the best live bands ever. Little Feat's turbulent '70s pilgrimage had been studded with commercial detours when its second incarnation as a swampy, blues-rock sextet clicked musically, and these English and American dates, beautifully recorded by George Massenburg, capture the band in all its rowdy, precise glory. The late Lowell George's influence had been damped down in the studio, deferring to his bandmates' writing and singing, but Columbus is dominated by his gruff, lyrical vocal presence and the mercurial tang of his indelible slide guitar. With the Tower of Power Horns aboard to inject razor-sharp horn work, this romp through the Feat songbook of southern-fried rock represents a satisfying summation of the band's best works, every bit as engaging as their studio models. This is simmering, smart music measured by an honor roll of great songs with no lapses. The only caveat--and a minor one--is the deletion of two tracks to squeeze the original two LPs onto a single CD. --Sam Sutherland

Product Description

Deluxe edition of Little Feat's classic 1978 live album plus 10 bonus tracks (7 of them previously unreleased). I have the original LP and the remastered CD copies of this album--but it sounds like a whole new album with the SACD process. The sound is crisp and the separation is great--you can truly hear Clapton and Allman in separate speakers-- music heaven--the vocals are clear and the drums by Jim Gordon sound great--the guitars and organ are fantastic--if you have the CD or LP--I suggest you spend the money for this SACD copy--it sounds like a whole new album--This is definitely Claptons best album..Also look forward to the Cream reunion in January 2005--hope they tour--Clapton will wail---

Nina Simone's Finest Hour - CD :handgestures-thumbup: :handgestures-thumbup:

Nina Simone

2000 Polygram Records

Amazon.com

Nina Simone communicates with a unique force on this Finest Hour collection, a welling, riveting power that's beyond the range of other singers. It's there whether the song is romantic or political, whimsical or sentimental, and these recordings from the 1960s demonstrate the range of material that she could make her own, from Gershwin to Jacques Brel, from Screamin' Jay Hawkins to Nat Adderley. With her own civil rights era anthems like "Mississippi Goddam" and the Brecht-Weill "Pirate Jenny," Simone commands our attention with a profoundly brooding, searing rage, while there's potent sensuality in her "Wild Is the Wind" and Willard Robison's "Don't Smoke in Bed." Whether she's accompanying herself with her spare piano or defying studio orchestras with the intensity of her performance, Simone is a special singer, her art consisting in stripping away the decorative artifice of a song to reveal a molten core beneath. --Stuart Broomer

Simone on Simone -- CD

Simone

2008 Koch Records
Being the daughter of a legendary artist comes with its own set of issues and complications. Most children of prominent musical artists that enter the business choose their own instrument. Simone has taken on an extra set of challenges by following in her mother’s footsteps as a vocalist.

She’s been one of the prominent members of the group Liquid Soul, and spent time on Broadway in the lead roles of the musicals Rent and Aida. For her first solo recording, she pays tribute to her mother’s legacy. For many a jazz fan, there will never be another Nina Simone.

The younger Simone is fully aware of that, and doesn’t attempt to replicate her mother’s work. Armed with arrangements of over 50 of her mother’s famous recordings, Simone sets out to make her own mark in the genre of jazz vocals. What you will find is a fine, accomplished artist with her own voice, her own dynamics, and her own delivery. While her covers of these pieces do not redefine them, Simone creates her own distinct versions, and attaches her identity to them.

Simone’s stage experience does her well here. There is an extra dose of voice control that is lacking in so many of today’s younger generations of vocalists. The leadoff track is symbolic of a passing of the torch, so to speak. It’s a live recording of “Music for Lover’s,” recorded with her mother in Ireland. You can hear the pride in the elder Simone’s voice as she introduces her daughter. It is pride that is well deserved.

Presence -- CD :handgestures-thumbup: :handgestures-thumbup:

Led Zeppelin

1975/1990 Atlantic Records

Jimmy Pages crowning achievement, March 16, 2000
By "humdat"

When Robert Plant and his family sustained serious injuries in a car accident on the Greek island of Rhoads in August 1975, the future of Led Zeppelin was immediately thrown into question. To further complicate matters, the band was spending a year of non-residency outside of Britain due to said countrys tax laws. Unable to tour, and unable to live with their families, the band decided to record a new album, "Presence". Recorded and mixed in just 18 days in Munich, West Germany, the results are striking and easily Led Zeppelins most personal album.

The epic "Achilles' Last Stand" catches Zeppelin at their most powerful and desperate as Jimmy Page builds track upon track of harmonized guitars while the rest of the band thunder maniacally behind him and Plant. It is certainly a task to follow this piece, and sure enough, the other songs don't quite measure up to "Achilles'". The rest of the album is mid-tempo guitar rock inspired by Plants frame of mind post-accident. "For Your Life" is depressing song about drug abuse which contains another fine Page solo. "Royal Orleans" is a short, compact funk-rock piece which supposedly cronicles John Paul Jones' misadventures with a drag queen in New Orleans 2 years previous. "Nobodys Fault But Mine" is a pounding blues-rock song with the Jones-John Bonham rhythm section caught in fine form, making the stop-start riffs sound easy. Pages lead is again worth mentioning. "Candy Store Rock" is a throw-away old-time Elvis-esque rock-and-roll piece which finds Page doing his best Jimmy Burton/Scotty Moore impersonation. "Hots On For Nowhere" is one of Zeppelins minor league masterpieces which has a swagger and a hacked off Robert Plant taking shots at his friends. Pages solo again is excellent, with plenty of Strat abuse as he pounds his whammy bar. "Tea For One", which closes the album, is often compared to "Since I've Been Loving You". It is a slow minor blues which has yet another classic Page solo and a desponant Plant lamenting his seperation from his wife and family.

"Presence" is arguably Jimmy Pages best work as a guitarist. The quality of his rhythm and lead work easily surpasses his work on the rest of the Zeppelin canon. "Achilles' Last Stand" alone is worth the price of the album, but the remaining six tracks also have plenty to offer. It is a personal album which may not immediately hit you hard, but over time will become a favorite.

Side one
No. Title Writer(s) Length
1. "Achilles Last Stand" Page, Plant 10:25
2. "For Your Life" Page, Plant 6:24
3. "Royal Orleans" Bonham, Jones, Page, Plant 2:58

At the excessive rate you're currently listening to music, do you realize you're going to break or wear out your shyt? :teasing-tease:

There's always more "Shyt" to buy, so I'm not to worried! :teasing-tease:

Now, if there is a problem with the "rate" that I'm listening or posting the music I am listening too, I suggest you take it a little slower! You don't have to review the whole thread at once, just take one post at a time and that should make it easier! ....and don't feel bad, some people just need more time than others, nothing wrong with that! :teasing-neener:

Actually, I am pretty darn thrilled with the amount of music I get to experience! :text-bump: :handgestures-thumbup:

Not at all. That was not the intention of my post, and I apologize if it sounded as such. By all means carry on. I enjoy viewing the many artists that you listen to. Always good ideas for new purchases when the time comes.

PS, you need to replace tone arm stylus! :laughing-rolling:
