I bought this after seeing WHOS playing on the list of selections.

Its a very impressive array of greats, mundel lowe, grant green, kenny burrel, and more.

This arent go to sleep type' of selection, as the title might indicate.

Regardless, this is a very good sampler of some great songs by great player, and the sound quality is quite decent. I think this is a superb value and a great opportunity to hear a wide variety of jazz guitarist styles. It is a sort of introduction to jazz guitar, but it is still very enjoyable for those of us that have a large collection of jazz guitar music already.

Lookout For Hope -- SACD

Jerry Douglas

2002 Sugarhill Records

Jerry Douglas sure can play the dobro. As the world's undisputed premier dobro player, Douglas has played with just about everybody. And, as would befit somebody with that kind of distinction, his playing is utterly virtuosic. The only question left, then, is what he wants to do with it. On Lookout for Hope, Douglas' fifth release for Sugar Hill, Douglas delivers up his usual newgrass, accompanied by some of the usual newgrass heavyweights, including Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan, and Jeff Coffin. Maura O'Connell, James Taylor, and Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio turn in appearances as well. Douglas tries to do a lot. "Patrick Meets the Brickbats and "Cave Bop," for example, show off his lightning-fast playing. They are dazzling displays, but ultimately none too satisfying. Douglas does far better in milking the slow, bittersweet tones of the instrument, such as he does on a cover of Duane Allman's "Little Martha." The ten-minute title track (and album centerpiece), penned by jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, is most intriguing, combining Middle Eastern-sounding scales (such as on David Grisman's "Arabia" opus) with resonant and percussive acoustic sounds. As the master of the instrument, Douglas can do pretty much whatever he wants. Lookout for Hope does not find him resting on his laurels. Instead, he explores a variety of settings and moods, all bound together with the distinctive sound of his instrument. ~ Jesse Jarnow

Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane

1957/2005 Blue Note Records

Amazon.com

Every year sees a crop of newly found jazz gems, but rarely are listeners treated to anything as special as this 1957 concert recording of Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, which was accidentally discovered in an unmarked box by a Library of Congress engineer early in 2005. Until now, fans could only dream of hearing these two immortals play together beyond the three studio tracks they left behind. But here they are, hitting their stride at an all-star benefit concert, basking in the chemistry they had developed in Monk's quartet during the preceding weeks at New York's Five Spot. Coltrane's playing is a revelation. He's both an inspired accompanist and a galvanizing soloist, taking the music to new heights with his bold, brilliantly challenging, and sometimes jaw-dropping phrases, note clusters, and blasts of power. Sharing with Coltrane a newfound sense of freedom following the personal and professional troubles that had plagued them both, Monk is clearly tickled to be in the tenorist's presence, injecting humorous commentaries and otherwise asserting his eccentric genius as a pianist. The material, which was very well recorded by the Voice of America, includes Monk classics like "Epistrophy," "Monk's Moods," and "Evidence," as well as a striking rendition of the standard "Sweet and Lovely." This is music that not only bears repeated listenings, but also demands them--the ultimate definition of a classic. --Lloyd Sachs

This review is from: Feels So Good (Audio CD)

The Grammy winning title cut "Feels so Good" is what turned me on to Chuck Mangione's music. But this CD goes much further than that. ALL of the recordings here are excellent. And they are arranged alternating the fast and slow pieces in a pleasing way. "Maui Waui" and "Last Dance" are nice and relaxing. "Theme from Side Street" is short but meaningful. "Hide and Seek" is a catchy piece that will have you tapping to it. And "The XIth Commandment" is a brilliant end to this great CD.

This is by far Chuck's best recording. If you're in a qundary about which Chuck Mangione CD to buy, THIS IS THE ONE!

Feels So Good - 9:42 (edit: #4 pop, #1 AC)
Maui-Waui - 10:13
Theme From 'Side Street' - 2:05
Hide & Seek (Ready Or Not Here I Come) - 6:25
Last Dance - 10:54
The XIth Commandment - 6:36

Chris Vadala: soprano, alto, and baritone saxes; piccolo, flute, and alto flute

Grant Geissman: electric, acoustic, 12-string, and classical guitars

When I Fall In Love -- CD

This review is from: When I Fall in Love (Audio CD)

The best way to describe what I hear when I listen to Chris Botti is a slow burn. The whole cd simmers with soft but intense sensuality. This is my favorite kind of music: exceptional melodies, respected and true to their origin but uniquely interpreted by extraordinary combinations of understated but undeniable arrangements. The traditional orchestral sounds are sophisticated and fresh creating a tapestry of genuine, gentle jazz sounds (try "My Romance" to understand what I mean). These standards he chose to include are truly some of my most favorite melodies of all time and he gives each song so much controlled passion it's delectable. The combinations of bass and trumpet for "What'll I Do?" could not be more perfect. "Let's Fall in Love," is swinging and true to Big Band reverence but Chris's interpretation is strikingly original. Sting's "La Belle Dame Sans Regrets" is the single to release with it's lush, latin mood. The unaffected vocals of Paula Cole are a well chosen compliment to Botti's exceptional talent as is the keyboard genius of pianist Billy Childs.

Listen for Chris's spectacular jazz trumpet in guest appearances on other cd's (for example on Renee Olstead's new cd) as well.

If you thought "Thousand Kisses Deep" was one of the best cd's last year (I did too) wait until you hear this one! Chris was just getting warmed up. This is the cd that maximizes all of his talent. The entire production is fabulous. One of my favorite top 5 releases of '04.

"When I Fall in Love" (4:23)
"What'll I Do?" (5:10)
"No Ordinary Love" (6:05)
"My Romance" (3:21)
"Let's Fall in Love" (3:40)
"Cinema Paradiso" (4:58)
"Someone to Watch Over Me" (4:36)
"La Belle Dame Sans Regrets" (5:32)
"The Nearness of You" (3:12)
"How Love Should Be" (4:04) (with Paula Cole)
"Make Someone Happy" (4:09)
"One for My Baby" (4:54)
"Time to Say Goodbye" ("Con te partirò") (4:45)

Orange and Blue -- CD

Al Di Meola

Meola's Delicate Power, January 20, 2004

This review is from: Orange & Blue (Audio CD)

Meola arrived at a point of culmination with this album. The music is consistent, deliberate, and channeled with what seems to have been a kind of mid-life confindence. He does explore new methods of instrumentation as may be expected with Meola, though certainly does not go overboard musically as do some artists during periods of high creativity. He is speaking from a very deep place, and the music represents his mastery, or display of control rather, over the guitar--and the tracts both blend and emerge as an profound expression of life's more difficult sentiments--"Until We Meet Again", 1 & 2, are good examples of this, and would be all one would need to hear to understand where he was coming from, though the album is complete in this respect--every song stands as an independent expression. This was not a pure American writing this music--he allows himself to reach back into his European memory to produce something more methodic and orchestrated--the intricacies are subtle perhaps, but precise and carefully rendered for sure.

All songs by Al Di Meola unless otherwise noted.

"Paradisio" – 7:19
"Chilean Pipe Song" – 4:52
"Ta'alina Chant" (Di Meola, Noa) – 1:56
"Orange And Blue" – 7:31
"This Way Before" – 4:39
"Summer Country Song" – 5:29
"If We Meet Again, Part I" – 1:29
"If We Meet Again, Part II" (Di Meola, Hernan Romero, Mario Parmisano) – 5:03
"Cyprus" (Di Meola, George Dalaras, Polykarpos Kyriacou) – 3:51
"Theme Of The Mothership" (Chick Corea, Di Meola) – 5:25
"Precious Little You" – 4:24
"Casmir" – 4:07
"On My Own" – 3:20

WAR - LIVE -- 2 CD Box Set

It Just Doesn't Get Much Better!
, February 10, 2002
By Archie Mercer "Archie" (Yorba Linda, CA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: War Live (Audio CD)

This by far is one of the best live sets to listen to. Just hearing the band feed off the crowd is tremendous. Recorded when War was just beginning to achieve cross-over success this set combines Top-40 hits with a grittier, down and dirty sound. Each member gets a turn to shine in the soptlight. Although I originally bought this because I liked "Cisco Kid" I found out that Cisco was by far not the best song here. In my opinion "Slipping into Darkness" is one of the best live songs ever recorded. Broken into 2 parts it ends up being about 17 minutes of pure joy. Another great surprise is "Get Down" a funk-driven, semi-protest song about race relations and police brutality.

I would HIGHly recommend this to any War Fan (unless you think Low Rider was their best), any funk fan, or just about any live music fan.
