The Best of Emerson Lake & Palmer -- CD

Emerson Lake & Palmer

1980 Atlantic Records - Import Germany

The original 3, February 16, 2009
By John Sposato (Syracuse, NY, USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Best Of Emerson Lake & Palmer (Audio CD)

I bought this CD for Carl Palmer to autograph when I saw him with Asia again in April (he signed the Asia CD instead). Since I have grown to love prog over the past several years, I thought maybe I'll play this. You get "Fanfare for the Common Man", "Jerusalem", and "Lucky Man". Lacking are "From the Beginning", "Knife Edge", and "Pictures at an Exhibition" due to lack of space, though they appear on later, superior compilations anyway. I'm just starting to like ELP, and if you are as well, this is the way to go. This time, I will slowly add the studio and live albums, instead of just getting them all at once.
This particular release is long out-of-print, as they've changed labels a few times, recently to Shout! Factory in North America. My copy is an early West German import for US release.

Hoedown (3:46)
Lucky Man (4:38)
Karn Evil 9 (1st Impression, Part 2) (4:48)
Jerusalem (2:45)
Peter Gunn (3:37)
Fanfare for the Common Man (2:57)
Still...You Turn Me On (2:54)
Tiger in a Spotlight (4:35)
Trilogy (8:51)

"Way down inside................you need" LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!~

I just learned to play that song yesterday and I just got done practicing it.

Hells Ya, I can play me a Led Zeppelin song.

BTW, the bass on that song is really simple and I still screw it up.

Private Investigations - The Best Of -- 2 CD Set

Mark Knopfler & Dire Straits

2005 Warner Bros. Records

Comprehensive Collection
, January 8, 2009
By Deborah Bankson "Deb" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler have been making alot of very good music for a long time (I admit Money For Nothing was the first song I really knew from MTV) and often trying to put together a set of music for artist like this is hard. There are a couple of things missing, The Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies and soundtracks of all time, but this collection is very go and not simply a Greatest Hits Package.

Of course there is Money and Sultans of Swing, but songs like Brothers in Arms, a very moving track that is not as well known and Skateaway show that in putting this together the good breadth and depth was considered.

Very well done and not just a throw together greatest hits.

Glad you're enjoyin' him, Dennie. , , :handgestures-thumbup:

Old John Lee made probably 100s of albums, many under other names in his early years, but many of them are some really good blues . . . and "Mr Lucky" is one onf them.
In the footenotes of the liner you'll see that John dedicated this one to the memory of Stevie Ray Vaughan

RIP, John Lee

"Live" at the Village Vanguard -- Remastered CD

This review is from: Live at the Village Vanguard (Reis) (Rstr) (Audio CD)

John Coltrane may have made more stirring albums than Live at the Village Vangaurd, but he never made a more important one.

It is not his playing, or his new band's, which did far better work later. It is not the songs he picked. It is not that this was his best show, becuase it was not.

But it is arguably the first live jazz album that made use of wide open spaces, modes over chords. There are chords here--this is not modal jazz in the strict sense. But these are so extended, it gave Trane, and the band, a chance to open up and play long solos without having to worry about changing chords on the next bar. This freed not only their soloing, but every jazz solo player of the 60s.

Now, I hear those little jazz wheels turning in your pretty little jazz head: Yes. Miles did do this on Kind Of Blue. But the songs there were neat little studio minitures, nuacned to make a perfect sublime album that people could play on their Heathkit tube amplifiers, drinking martinis after Gunsmoke or Jack Benny. Vangaurd is wild improvosation--all the edges hang out.

In retrospect, this is not the best jazz show ever, but as far as invention and the starting point for jazz in the 60s, this towers over almost everything else.

Track listing

1. Spiritual
2. Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise
3. Chasin' the Trane

a review:
"Emmylou Harris's formula has been to match a crack crew of left-of-center country players with an assortment of tasteful tunes and head into the studio with a nonintrusive producer. Now and then (most notably the 1980 bluegrass collection Roses in the Snow), she tampers with her basic blueprint and comes up with something exceptional. Wrecking Ball is one of those. Daniel Lanois's radiant production no longer seems as fresh as it did on albums by U2, Peter Gabriel, and Bob Dylan, but here its hum enfolds Harris like an electric blanket. Lanois's usual recruits, including U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr., and New Orleans regulars Malcolm Burn, Brian Blade, and Daryl Johnson, lay down a solid base for Harris's weary vocals and Lanois's buzzing guitar. At its core, Wrecking Ball seems almost too finely calculated. Hot producer plus sought-after songwriters plus venerated performer frequently totals to deadly bore. Here, however, all that calculation adds up to something."

:handgestures-thumbup: a 1995 release . . . . ,, Thanks to Botch for posting this one awhile back and bringing my attention to it.
If I ever imagined the voice of an angel I think it would sound a lot like Emmylou Harris.

Since anyone considering buying this probably knows what a great album it is, I am writing this simply to address the Hybrid SACD version of Blue Train. This is one of those albums that I, personally, have spent the money to upgrade 3 times (it's THAT good).

While I can't speak for the recent RVG Series reissue, I can say that this version sounds considerably better than the 1996 reissue, The Ultimate Blue Train--bass is richer, drums crisper and overall live feel of the recording is unprecedented. If are considering buying the RVG remaster, why not spend a few dollars more and get this Hybrid SACD since it plays in both Super Audio and regulars CD players. It's definitely worth the investment.

Stompin' At The Savoy - LIVE -- 2 CD Set

By chakasworld "chakasworld" (Atlanta, GA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Live: Stompin at the Savoy (Audio CD)

By the time this CD was released, Chaka was no longer a member of Rufus (she agreed to this recording to fulfill her contract with the group!), and I am glad that they went out blazing!! The music is in high gear, and Chaka HITS ALL OF HER NOTES!! The CD can almost be called 'The Greatest Hits..Live!', but we are treated to an extra live song (Ain't That Peculiar), which was never recorded by Chaka & Rufus!! With the decision to devote 3 of the 4 sides to live music, a few songs were omited (including 'Everlasting Love' & 'The Best Of Your Heart'), BUT the 4th side contains studio songs. Included are the CLASSIC 'Ain't Nobody', which sounds like it should've been on a solo Chaka CD, and Khan's TOUR DE FORCE rendition of 'Don't Go To Strangers'!! I have a rare live version of this song, and Chaka tears a hole in it, SERIOUSLY! Just awesome! 'Don't Go To Strangers' may be Chaka's finest interpretation of a Jazz Standard, and when it's over, you really want more from The Diva!!! F.Y.I. - The omitted live version of 'Everlasting Love', which Chaka also sang the sh** out of, can be found on the soundtrack album for 'Night Shift' (1982, Warner Brothers). Good luck finding that one! Also, 'Stompin' at the Savoy' (PLUS 'Everlasting Love'!!) CAN FIT onto a single CD, so what's Warner Brothers waiting for ?
Peace, SD (of 'Chaka's World')

I remember hearing this music as a mere 6 year old and it has stuck with me for the last 37 years! I can't really express to you what this music means to me personally. I have become a true Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 junkie in the last 10 years. I actually had to go and find this album, along with Equinox, and Crystal Illusions, and have them converted to cd in order to savor what I knew was going to be a true delight! My love affair with Lani Hall's haunting and gorgeous voice goes on endlessly. I have actually brought my students( I teach high school band), particularly my jazz ensemble members, into the Brazilian Jazz fold by playing many of the cuts available on sheet music. It's still delightful today and will be for many years to come. It's a MUST HAVE!!

This review is from: Look Around (Audio CD)

This album starts off with a cover of The Beatles' "With A Little Help From My Friends". Like Brasil '66's cover of "Day Tripper" this track is nice, but not essential. If the whole album were covers like this, it would be easy to dismiss this disc. But as an introduction, "Little Help" actually works just fine. It's the fanfare that announces all that is to come on this album. The rest of the disc is track after track of brilliant arrangements, impeccable musicianship and beautiful vocals. "Pradizer Adeus", "So Many Stars" and "Like A Lover" are timeless classics. And enough can't be said about what a landmark recording their version of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "The Look of Love" is. The whole album speaks volumes about the time period in which it was created but at the same time, has retained it's freshness and vitality. A masterpiece! All of the original artwork, liner notes and even the classic brown A&M label have been faithfully reproduced.

"With a Little Help From My Friends" (John Lennon, Paul McCartney)
"Roda" (Gilberto Gil, João Augusto)
"Like a Lover" (Dori Caymmi, Nelson Motta, Alan Bergman, Marilyn Bergman)

"Tristeza (Goodbye Sadness)" (Haroldo Lobo, Niltinho Tristeza)
"The Look of Love" (Burt Bacharach, Hal David)

Cadence Classics - Their 20 Greatest Hits -- CD

Everly Brothers

The Everly's at the peak of their career, May 7, 2000
By John A. Kuczma "RogueUlfric" (Marietta, GA USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Cadence Classics: Their 20 Greatest Hits (Audio CD)

The Everly Brothers did their very best work on the Cadence label, and this collection puts together their best known cuts and some superb lesser known tracks.

All of the big cross-over hits are here, led by Bye Bye Love, Bird Dog and All I Have to Do is Dream. No one could put the pain of a failed romance into music like the Everly's, be it the eternally hopeful sound of When Will I Be Loved or the agonizingly heart-broken I Wonder If I Care As Much. Still, they weren't afraid to have fun with their music either, and the playfully cute lyrics of Poor Jenny, Problems and I Kissed You help offset the often somber tone of the album.

If you are an avid fan of the Everlys, you will love this collection. If not, you owe it to yourself to discover just how good they really were. Cadence Classics: Their 20 Greatest Hits is just the ticket to do it with.

Track Listing
1. Bye Bye Love
2. I Wonder If I Care as Much
3. Wake up, Little Susie

The Best of..... -- CD

The Chieftains

1992 Columbia Legacy

Amazon.com

The tracks on The Best of the Chieftains are drawn from The Chieftains 7, The Chieftains 8, and Boil the Breakfast Early--three of the band's recordings from the late 1970s. This was the period when former Bothy Band and Planxty flautist Matt Molloy and vocalist/bodhran player Kevin Cunniffe joined up and finally fulfilled Paddy Maloney's vision of what the band should sound like. It also marks the last time the Chieftains recorded pure, unadulterated traditional Irish music. Not long after making these albums, the band set off on a new career that has included numerous movie and TV soundtracks, collaborations with pop stars of various stripes, and guest appearances with symphony orchestras. Although some purists decry the band's later attempts at crossover, the near perfection of tracks such as the exquisitely performed suite of dance tunes "Chase Around the Windmill" show that the Chieftains had taken the old tunes about as far as they could go. The group may have gone on to make better-selling records, but they never topped the traditional grace and charm of the songs on The Best of the Chieftains. --Michael Simmons

...Sings Kristofferson -- CD

Willie Nelson

1979 Columbia Records

Long before alternative country, even before "outlaw country," Kris Kristofferson was defining the outer limits of country music with his frank, boozy, often risque songs and rough-hewn singing. In 1979, Nelson recorded a collection of Kristofferson's best compositions, appropriately titled WILLIE NELSON SINGS KRISTOFFERSON. The set kicks off with a funky take on "Me and Bobbie McGee," then slides effortlessly through eight more classics including "Help Me Make Me Through the Night," "Sunday Morning Comin' Down," "For the Good Times," and one of gospel's great songs of self-recrimination, "Why Me."Recorded at the peak of Nelson's fame, this disc is vintage Willie and Family, loose but never sloppy. It almost sounds as if the band is playing the songs for the first time, but that they know each other so well and are such expert players that the whole thing falls together naturally and effortlessly. Nelson obviously loves this material, and it shows both in his singing and his guitar playing, which is particularly inspired here. In the 1980s Willie and Kristofferson formed a country supergroup with Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash, recording and touring as The Highwaymen.

Building The Perfect Beast -- CD

Don O'Henley (

1984 Geffen Records

Amazon.com

Henley--arguably the most talented member of the Eagles--had toyed with playful pop hooks on his I Can't Stand Still solo bow in 1982. Two years later he got down to business on this brainy, politics-themed sophomore disc, which indicted his native Hollywood as venomously as "Hotel California" once did. Surfaces were still somewhat glossy--there's no denying the foot-tapping elan of "Boys of Summer or "All She Wants to Do Is Dance." But the vitriol roiling just beneath those surfaces was deep, intellectual stuff. Henley, as he continued to prove with the more eloquent The End of the Innocence a few years later, is someone his fans can neither underestimate nor predict. Can we say the same of Glenn Frey or Randy Meisner? --Tom Lanham

1. "The Boys of Summer" (Don Henley, Mike Campbell) – 4:45
2. "You Can't Make Love" (Henley, Danny Kortchmar) – 3:34
3. "Man With a Mission" (Henley, Kortchmar, J.D. Souther) – 2:43
4. "You're Not Drinking Enough" (Kortchmar) – 4:40
5. "Not Enough Love in the World" (Henley, Kortchmar, Benmont Tench) – 3:54
6. "Building the Perfect Beast" (Henley, Kortchmar) – 4:59
7. "All She Wants to Do Is Dance" (Kortchmar) – 4:28
8. "A Month of Sundays" (Henley) – 4:31 (cassette and CD only)
9. "Sunset Grill" (Henley, Kortchmar, Tench) – 6:22
10. "Drivin' With Your Eyes Closed" (Henley, Kortchmar, Stan Lynch) – 3:41
11. "Land of the Living" (Henley, Kortchmar) – 3:24

Note: "A Month of Sundays" appeared on the cassette and compact disc versions of the album but was not included on the LP format. On vinyl it was released as the B-side of the single "The Boys of Summer".

Dreams - The Ultimate Corrs Collection -- CD

Corr Blimey!, December 1, 2006
By Amanda Richards (Georgetown, Guyana) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Dreams: The Ultimate Corrs Collection (Thai) (Audio CD)

This compilation album from the mega-talented Corr Family Singers (as opposed to the Von Trapp Family Singers of course) is their second "hits" collection, but the two albums are different enough to justify getting both if you're a Corrs fan.

Jim, Sharon, Caroline and Andrea Corr (thought I'd list Jim first for a change) play almost every musical instrument known to man (or woman) between them, including the tin whistle (Andrea) and the bodhran (Caroline), giving them a very distinctive sound that you can pick out across a crowded room.

This CD has twenty tracks, only eight of which can be found on "The Best of the Corrs" and most of the eight are remixed and tweaked for a whole new sound. Fourteen of their singles are included, the lead off single from this CD being a remix of "Goodbye" from the album "Borrowed Heaven"

Other tracks of special interest are the radio mix of "Dreams" (written by Stevie Nicks and made famous by Fleetwood Mac); "When the Stars Go Blue" a live performance of the Ryan Adams song, featuring Bono; perennial favorite "Breathless", and the classic "Ruby Tuesday" featuring Ron Wood from the "Live in Dublin" album.

There are also two instrumentals, "Haste to the Wedding" (fans of the kid's group "The Wiggles" will remember this one) and "Toss the Feathers".

Recommended for Corrs fans everywhere to keep us going until a new album is released.

This review is from: Anam (Audio CD)

In Irish Gaelic, "Anam" means "soul" or "essence." That spirit certainly comes through on this album by Ireland's Clannad. From the ethereal "Theme From Harry's Game" (originally recorded for an earlier album, "Magical Ring") to "In A Lifetime" (a duet between Maire Brennan and U2's Bono), this album evokes emotion with each track. The first time I heard "Harry's Game," I found myself moved to tears - without even knowing what the words meant. Maire's voice has *that* much power. This is an essential for any Celtic music fan's collection.
