Like Minds -- CD

Burton, Corea, Metheny, Haynes, Holland

1998 Concord Jazz

Amazon.com

Vibist Gary Burton has been collaborating with pianist Chick Corea and guitarist Pat Metheny since the mid-'70s, and it shows. The three have a strong intuitive sense of each other's lines and sound and can enhance the music in myriad, subtle ways. Having a great rhythm section doesn't hurt either, and bassist Dave Holland and drummer Roy Haynes are two of the very best. On Like Minds they have created an excellent CD: a no-frills, straight-ahead jazz album, crisply recorded, full of energy and imagination. With the exception of the George Gershwin piece, "Soon," the disc features all original compositions, with considerable thought given to distinguishing each soloist despite the surface similarity of their nimble, bouncy styles. Like minds, perhaps, but each possesses a singular voice and the ability to merge it creatively with others. --Wally Shoup

"Question and Answer" (Metheny) – 6:24
"Elucidation" (Metheny) – 5:21
"Windows" (Corea) – 6:17
"Futures" (Corea) – 10:41
"Like Minds" (Burton) – 5:50
"Country Roads" (Burton) – 6:26
"Tears of Rain" (Metheny) – 6:33
"Soon" (Gershwin) – 6:24
"For a Thousand Years" (Metheny) – 5:23
"Straight Up and Down" (Corea) – 9:02

Dennie,

How do you rate this one???

I have a list of wants and not sure if I should add this one?

Keith
Good to see you Keith. This is a fantastic disc. They are all great musicians on their own, and even better musicians in this group. I'm a big Gary Burton fan and he shines on this one. Along with Pat and Roy and Chick and Dave. All superstars of their instruments! This is truly "Like Minds" coming together as one!!! Top Notch!!!! :text-bravo:

Dennie

I have this one too, and definitely recommend it. Kinda on the mellow side, but really good musicianship.

Twisted Angel -- CD

LeAnn Rimes

2002 Curb Records

Leann is on her way!, October 7, 2002
By GlitterJ (Canada) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Twisted Angel (Audio CD)

I've been a fan of Leann Rimes since I first heard "Blue " on the radio. Recently in the last few years she has strayed from her country roots to songs like "I Need You", Can't fight The Moonlight and more recently "Life Goes On". While many critics feel that her new cd isn't very good , I have to disagree. Its only natural for an artist to want to grow with their music, and especially when they've been compared to a classic singer their whole career; Patsy Cline.

Leann will always have a country voice, but she can sing pop and R&b very well, and even though she may lose fans with this transition , she can at least say she's making the music she wants.. My personal fave song off this cd is Twisted Angel, a song Leann co-wrote, with its bluesy, almost country twang it definitely proves even in her early 20's Leann still can sing the heck out of a song!

1. "Life Goes On" Andreas Carlsson, Desmond Child, Rimes 3:33
2. "Wound Up" Gary Burr, Greg Pagani, Rimes 4:15
3. "The Safest Place" Eric Bazilian, Child, Mark Hudson, Victoria Shaw 3:52
4. "Trouble with Goodbye" Pete Amato, Randy Cantor, Shelly Peiken 3:22
5. "***" Ty Lacy, Holly Lamar, Dennis Matkosky 3:29
6. "Suddenly" Carlsson, Child 3:58
7. "Tic Toc" Amato, Pagani, Christina Rumbley 3:40
8. "Sign of Life" Burr, Child, Pagani 4:28
9. "Review My Kisses" Child, Marie Wilson 5:31
10. "No Way Out" Austin Deptula, Gary Leach, Rimes 3:55
11. "Love Is an Army" Child, Gyan Evans 4:01
12. "You Made Me Find Myself" Tina Arena, Child, Lacy 3:39
13. "Twisted Angel" Leach, Rimes 3:21

just got some Vanessa Carlton based on Zing's rec; I have Be Not Nobody...
I'd be very interested to know if you consider that a stellar recording.

Ok, listened to this one (Be Not Nobody) today, and yeah it's pretty good, esp. for a "pop" recording. The vocals are particularly well recorded, with nice separation from the rest of the instrumentation. They have obviously taken some care to mix some of the "little sounds" - like chimes and stuff - into the l/r sides of the soundstage. Overall though I thought the instruments were recorded well but not top-notch like some of the other albums we've brought up (e.g. Bob James); the bass was kinda lacking, and sometimes the overall spectrum was a bit on the bright side. I wonder if that's partly because of the mastering? Some compression for radio-friendliness perhaps.

So, I think I'd put it close to what heeman said, an 8(+) out of 10. Decent music, too, though a little too pop for my general tastes. At least she writes her own songs, gotta give her respect for that.

In Modern Times -- CD

Spyro Gyra

2001 Heads Up Records

Amazon.com

This is a different kind of release for Spyro Gyra. Jay Beckenstein seems to be searching for a new sound for the organization he has led for nearly 25 years, though that observation is not detectable on the three very radio-friendly tracks that lead off this CD. From there on, the contributions from the other members are more pronounced and a bit more progressive than the usual smooth-jazz fare from this former Buffalo bar band. From bassist Scott Ambush's lead role on the melody to "The River Between" to guitarist Julio Fernandez's long flowing featured line on "Open Door" to drummer Joel Rosenblatt's very Crusaders-like "Planet J," featuring guest trombonist Andrew Lippman, it's obvious that musically, Spyro is becoming less of Beckenstein's saxophone band, and more of a democratic group. But the most surprising tunes, from a compositional standpoint, were written by the leader, including the Santana-inspired "Florida Straits," and "East River Blue," which has traces of the crime-jazz music Duke Ellington and Henry Mancini pioneered in the early '60s. --Mark Ruffin

Back On The Block -- CD

Quincy Jones

1989 Qwest Records

1989's BACK ON THE BLOCK is a producer's record in every sense of the word. Although he produced and arranged every track, Quincy Jones is rarely front and center on his own album. Instead, every track is jazzed up--and souled up and rocked up and popped up--by a galaxy of guest stars. The range is remarkable; any album that can bring together Ella Fitzgerald and Ice-T has to have something going for it. That something is Jones's uncanny ability to match artists and songs; few other producers would have thought of a Ray Charles and Chaka Khan duet, and having that song be the exhilarating "I'll Be Good To You" is just lagniappe. Jones's jazz roots show proudly throughout, most particularly on the slinky bossa nova groove of "Septembro (Brazilian Wedding Song)" and the celebratory tribute "Birdland." However, BACK ON THE BLOCK is really a concept album about the 20th century evolution of African-American music.
1 "Prologue (2Q's Rap)" Big Daddy Kane, Jones 1:04
2 "Back on the Block" Jones, Rod Temperton, Siedah Garrett, Caiphus Semenya, Ice-T, Melle Mel, Kane, Kool Moe Dee 6:34

Walk In The Sun -- CD

Sue Foley

1996 Discovery Records

Walk in the Sun isn't quite typical Sue Foley. With her first three albums, the guitarist demonstrated that she had a firm grasp on searingly electric Chicago blues and high-voltage blues-rock. With Walk in the Sun, she expands her sonic palette somewhat, taking in gritty R&B, reverb-drenched surf and down-home country, among other styles of blues and roots music. Throughout the album, she demonstrates that she is gifted enough to effortlessly bring in these other styles without losing her distinctive identity. The result is her best album since her stellar debut, Young Girl Blues. ~ Thom Owens, All Music Guide

Verve Jazz Masters 17 -- CD

Nina Simone

1994 Verve Records

This compilation brings together 16 great tracks that Nina Simone recorded for the Philips label during the years 1964-1966. This record presents Nina in her prime, at a time when she created some of the best work of her legendary career. Her range of musical style is, as always, all over the map: jazz, folk, protest songs, gospel, musical theater, and R&B are all a part of her creative journey.

Included in this collection are such timeless classics as her original tunes "Four Women," and "Mississippi Goddam," both which beautifully articulate racial injustices, her haunting version of "Wild Is The Wind," and her unforgettable version of Screaming Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You." Also included on this CD is a finger-popping "My Baby Just Cares For Me" which was recorded live at the Vine Street Bar & Grill in 1987.

Butterfly - SoundTrack -- CD

Ennio Morricone - Composer - Conductor

1982/2008 Daggored Records

It had been out of print for more than a decade, but Dagored Records has brought the film score to BUTTERFLY back into circulation. Pia Zadora's breakout film (as well as Orson Welles's final one), BUTTERFLY has become a cult favorite since its release in 1982. Zadora, who won a Golden Globe for her performance in the film, also appears on the soundtrack, offering her provocative vocals on "It's Wrong for Me to Love You." But BUTTERFLY is most notable for being scored by Academy Award-winning maestro Ennio Morricone. More subdued and ambient that much of Morricone's other work, BUTTERFLY once again demonstrates the Italian composer's breadth and scope.

Track Listing
1. Butterfly, film score: Main Theme
2. Butterfly, film score: Hot Tin Tub
3. Butterfly, film score: Silver On The Sage

Frank -- CD

Amy Winehouse

2003 Universal Republic Records

From Amazon.co.uk

With her debut album Frank, Amy Winehouse proves to be one of the most original, honest, and brave singer/songwriters to emerge in recent years. Over the course of the 13 songs, she manages to do everything required of a classic album. This is a stark piece of work, comprising husky, frequently sexually charged vocals, painfully honest lyrics and soft trumpets, laidback beats, and sparse guitar work. It seems that soulful jazz doesn't always have to be bland--it can also be playful, twisted, and arrogant ("Amy Amy Amy"). "F*** Me Pumps" charts a seemingly guilt-free act of infidelity: "What do you expect when you leave me here alone?" she asks coyly, as if by way of justifiable explanation. "You wouldn't want me to be lonely," she adds. You can't help warming to her, despite what she's saying. A unique sense of humour (how rare in music now) and a no-bull attitude make for an interesting, compelling debut. Frank? Yes, but refreshingly so. You wouldn't want her for a girlfriend, but as a life companion she may yet prove indispensable. --Cortman Virtue

Sailing to Philadelphia -- CD

Mark Knopfler

2000 Warner Bros. Records

Former Dire Straits leader Mark Knopfler's second proper solo album (he's remained preoccupied with soundtrack work through the years) is a stirring and considered set of transatlantic blues. The collection is bolstered by contributions from Van Morrison ("The Last Laugh") and James Taylor (the title track), while Knopfler's guitar playing remains fresh and alive as he merges country and folk picking with electric blues. But it's as a writer that he really impresses: "Baloney Again" is a sensitive portrayal of a black gospel outfit in Jim Crow America; the title track is an intriguing distillation of Thomas Pynchon's doorstopper novel, Mason & Dixon; and "Silvertown Blues" is a stirring appreciation of blue-collar endeavor. A lovingly and honestly crafted collection, Sailing to Philadelphia shows Knopfler's talent and commitment remain as strong as ever. --Gavin Martin

Having spent most of the mid-'90s taking a break from the music industry to start a family and recharge her creative batteries, Sade returned in 2000 with the stellar LOVERS ROCK. Bridging the gap between the Quiet Storm sophistication of her earlier work and the edgier, groove-driven efforts of her younger brethren, the Nigerian chanteuse took her sensual sound out on the road for the Lovers Live 2001 Tour. The in-concert document LOVERS LIVE (which also has an accompanying DVD) has a clear, organic sound that brings to life every musical pit stop made throughout this career-spanning set.

Recent fare like the atmospheric "Slave Song" (with its dubby excerpt from The Abyssinians reggae classic "African Race") and the hip-hop flavored "Flow" mix effortlessly with the jazzy cool of "Smooth Operator" and infectious, funked-up vibe of "The Sweetest Taboo." Best of all are the lullaby-like "The Sweetest Gift," written for Sade's little girl and featuring accompaniment by a sole acoustic guitar, and the straightforward sweetness of "By Your Side" dedicated to her fans who "kept the flame burning."

Recorded live at Arrowhead Pond, Anaheim, California and Great Western Forum, Inglewood, California in September 2001.

Rockferry -- CD

Duffy

2008 Mercury Records

Amazon.co.uk

Rockferry, the Welsh singer's lovingly constructed debut album, has already succeeded beyond expectations, and although Duffy may not quite be the ingénue portrayed by a clever press campaign (she nearly won a local television talent show a few years back while a single credited to Aimee Duffy is still available on iTunes) she is surely the most appealing of the current flood of young soul sirens. The astonishing title track, co-written by Bernard Butler, sounded like a lost transmission that had taken decades to get through as soon as it hit radio last year. But the gently rolling soul ballad "Stepping Stone", that strapping, inescapable monster hit "Mercy", the ice cool "Serious" (the one time she really does channel the spirit of Dusty Springfield) and the wistful, elegant "Warwick Avenue" are similarly effective. Suggestions by some that Rockferry is little more than sixties pastiche are churlish. Butler's previous work with David McAlmont (featured here as a backing singer) showed his skill at writing and arranging the dramatic, while her other collaborators such as Steve Booker and the team of Jimmy Hogarth and Eg White are hardly lightweights. But despite some wonderful orchestral settings, it's Duffy's terrific voice that makes this so satisfying, even overpowering Butler's exquisitely underplayed guitar work on "Rockferry" itself. Growling the blues on "Syrup & Honey" or belting it out over his lovingly arranged wall of sound on "Distant Dreamer", she sets the tone throughout, several of her songs dealing with escape, both physical and romantic. The sound of someone singing herself to stardom, Rockferry is at times genuinely amazing. --Steve Jelbert

Goin' Yard -- 20 Bit CD

Monty Alexander

2001 Telarc Jazz

Excellent CD, May 15, 2001
By "da_juice" (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Goin Yard (Audio CD)

This is my first foray into jazz-reggae fusion and "Going Yard" did not disappoint. The less than subtle Jamaican rhythm section with the prominent bass guitar and crackling hand drums induce more basic emotions that constrast nicely with the light sophistication of Monty Alexander's piano. This is also the first time that I've heard M. Alexander's music and he is a talented performer. With his left hand anchoring the chord progressions, his right is free to playfully dance through the various melodies.

The selections are all pretty good, although in my opinion, the band is at its best when everyone is jamming hard. These include Tracks 2 & 7 which are my favorites among the original compositions. The two Bob Marley covers are also very well done (except for the cheesy vocals in the second half of "Could You Be Loved")

All in all, the CD was an excellent live recording and it has encouraged me to explore more of Monty's music as well as other jazz-reggae fusions.

"Take A Bow" also debuts at #1-bullet on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs Chart with a phenomenal first week of 266,696 scans. The song was written by fellow Def Jam artist Ne-Yo and produced by Stargate, the same team responsible for Rihanna's "Unfaithful" (of 2006), and "Hate That I Love You," her Top 10 duet with Ne-Yo released late last year. "Take A Bow" raises the curtain on the upcoming new CD U.S.release of Rihanna's GOOD GIRL GONE BAD: RELOADED. The new configuration arrives in stores on June 17th - the week after the album officially marks its historic 52nd week on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
The original 12-song CD version of GOOD GIRL GONE BAD - source of the non-stop string of hit singles that began with the MTV VMA and Grammy Award-winning global #1 hit "Umbrella" (featuring Jay-Z), then "Shut Up and Drive," "Hate That I Love You" (featuring Ne-Yo), and the current "Don't Stop the Music" - will now be augmented with three bonus tracks: 1) "Take A Bow"; 2) a cover version of Maroon 5's "If I Never See Your Face Again" (featuring Maroon 5); and 3) "Disturbia."

GOOD GIRL GONE BAD (released June 5, 2007) was the third album release in less than two years by multi-platinum MTV VMA, Grammy, and American Music Award winning artist - and CoverGirl spokesperson - Rihanna. It followed-up 2006's RIAA platinum A Girl Like Me, containing the back-to-back hits, "S.O.S." and "Unfaithful"; and her RIAA gold debut from 2005, Music Of the Sun, featuring the worldwide smash, "Pon De Replay."
