The best $0.01 ever spent.................

Why am I in such a good mood tonight?????

Could it be the GREAT MUSIC??????

(Listening in my office 2.0 system)

Keith, while you're adding videos of that album's songs, you've GOT to include the Beach Boys' Crocodile Rock. That's probably the most perfect match of them all. I don't even like the Beach Boys but their rendition of that song is phenomenal!

Bon Jovi's Levon ain't too shabby either! :handgestures-thumbup:

Ultimate Wes Montgomery: Selected by George Benson -- CD

Wes Montgomery

1998 Verve Records

Although serious fans and collectors will have little use for the disc, Ultimate Wes Montgomery is a solid collection of 12 highlights from the guitarist's Verve recordings as selected by George Benson. For the curious neophyte, the disc offers a good overview of Montgomery's time at the label, featuring the guitarist in a variety of different settings, including combos with Wynton Kelly, Oliver Nelson and Jimmy Smith. Certainly, the disc should be thought of as an introduction, not the final word, but on that level it works very well. Among the featured numbers are "Baby, It's Cold Outside," "Caravan," "West Coast Blues," "'Round Midnight," "Mi Cosa" and "Four on Six." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Track Listing
1. Twisted Blues
2. Baby, It's Cold Outside
3. Caravan
4. Tequila
5. West Coast Blues
6. 'Round Midnight
7. Impressions
8. People
9. O.G.D. (aka Road Song)
10. Matchmaker, Matchmaker
11. Mi Cosa
12. King of the Road
13. Boss City
14. Four on Six

Jimmy & Wes - The Dynamic Duo -- Remastered 20-bit CD

Jimmy Smith & Wes Montgomery

1966/1997 Verve Master Edition

The ultradynamic duo!, July 16, 2000
By Jeffrey Harris (South San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Jimmy & Wes: Dynamic Duo (Audio CD)

It's amazing what can happen when you put two master musicians like Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery in the same room, as this classic album documents. Supported by players like drummer Grady Tate, Clark Terry, and Ray Barretto, and arranger Oliver Nelson, Jimmy & Wes go to town on "The Dynamic Duo". "James & Wes", "Night Train", and the cool spin they put on "Baby, It's Cold Outside" make this album a joy to listen again and again. The alternate take of "Road Song" at the end is the cream on the cake, and in my opinion is even better than the originally issued take. One of the first releases in Verve's excellent Master Edition series, the packaging and remastered sound make this the definitive issue of this jazz classic and one of my all time favorites.

"Down by the Riverside" (Traditional) - 10:02
"Night Train" (Jimmy Forrest, Lewis Simpkins, Oscar Washington) - 6:48
"James and Wes" (Jimmy Smith) - 8:13
"13 (Death March)" (Gary McFarland) - 5:22
"Baby, It's Cold Outside" (Frank Loesser) - 6:05
"O.G.D. (aka Road Song)" (Wes Montgomery) - 5:13

My last one for the evening.....

Careless Love -- CD

Madeleine Peyroux

2004 Rounder Records

Madeleine Peyroux's unique blend of jazz and pop was first unveiled on 1996's DREAMLAND, where she sounded like a postmodern heir to the smoky-voiced tradition that ran down from Billie Holiday through the likes of Karen Dalton and Judy Roderick. Though Peyroux made a splash with her debut, she quickly dropped out of the music scene, not to appear again until eight years later with the long-overdue follow-up, CARELESS LOVE.
Here, Peyroux tackles material from a variety of sources; some songs were written expressly for her by such contemporary songsmiths as Jesse Harris (who penned Norah Jones's breakthrough hit, "Don't Know Why"). Perhaps most striking, though, are her interpretations of older compositions. Peyroux redefines the darkly yearning Leonard Cohen tune "Dance Me to the End of Love" as a sultry invitation rather than a heart-on-the-sleeve plea. Her lighter-than-air stroll through the clouds of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" has a graceful ease that puts the song's many previous cover versions to shame. Throughout CARELESS LOVE, Peyroux--with highly sympathetic production from Joni Mitchell right-hand-man Larry Klein--proves fully up to the task of redefining the role of torch singer for the careworn 21st century.

"Dance Me to the End of Love" (Leonard Cohen) - 3:56
"Don't Wait Too Long" (Madeleine Peyroux–Jesse Harris–Larry Klein) - 3:10
"Don't Cry Baby" (Saul Bernie–James P. Johnson–Stella Unger) - 3:16
"You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" (Bob Dylan) - 3:26
"Between the Bars" (Elliott Smith) - 3:42
"No More" (Salvador Camerata–Bob Russell) - 3:31
"Lonesome Road" (Gene Austin–Nathaniel Shilkret) - 3:10
"J'ai Deux Amours" (Vincent Scotto–Géorges Koger–Henri Varna) - 2:54
"Weary Blues" (Hank Williams) - 3:39
"I'll Look Around" (George Cory-Douglas Cross) - 4:47
"Careless Love" (William C. Handy-Martha Koenig–Spencer Williams) - 3:50
"This Is Heaven to Me" (Frank Reardon–Ernest Schweikert) - 3:12

WOW!!!!! WOW!!!! WOW!!!!

I just listened to Track 7 "The Pits" and it stopped me in my tracks. I had to stop, sit and listen. 11:49 of some of the most amazing music I've ever heard. If any of you guitar players or fans aren't familiar with Danny Gatton, well........that is just wrong and needs to be corrected A.S.A.P.!
yes.gif

Joey's amazing as always on the Organ. These two playing together, may have changed my life! :bow-blue:

Dennie :eusa-clap:

Ok I'll definitely get this one. I've been listening to a lot of Gatton's stuff lately, love it.

Really, really good stuff Pauly. Let us know how you like it.

Dennie

Ok got it, listened to it, like it a lot! Some phenomenal playing, indeed. Though honestly on the first couple of listens, I think I prefer - musically - some of Gatton's other albums like Elmira St. or Cruisin Deuces. I know this is terrible to say as someone who plays keys, but I've never really liked the sound of the classic hammond organ.

OMG............there is nothing better than a Hammond B3 with a Leslie Cabinet.

xb3.gif

Then their is Jon Lord's take on it!

I guess it's mainly because the hammond sound is too common, I just get tired of it after a while, and the often excessive vibrato that many people use gets irksome as well. This is just a personal thing with me... And I realize the same thing could be said of a piano (though of course to someone who actually plays a piano, not all pianos sound the same), or all Fender strats  etc.
