What Are You Listening To?

Electric is the pivotal third album by The Cult. Released in 1987, the album marked a deliberate stylistic change in the band from a Gothic rock to a hard rock band. Rick Rubin, the producer on Electric, had been specifically hired to remake the band's sound in an effort to capitalize on the popularity of hard rock and heavy metal in the 1980s. The album was featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

All songs written by Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy, except where noted.

Speaking of Tab Benoit...
His keyboard player on that album is Ivan Neville (Aaron's son). THIS guy is fantastic. I listen to him quite often. I saw him I concert about ten years ago. Bruce Willis opened for him! Yes, THE Bruce Willis - who is the reason I went to the concert in the first place.

Vitamin C -- CD

Vitamin C

1999 Elektra Records

Pop perfection, May 7, 2006
By T.E. (New Mexico,USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vitamin C [ENHANCED CD] (Audio CD)

Vitamin C, despite having broken out with chart hits "Smile" and "Graduation (Friends Forever)" still was overlooked by many many pop artists back in the day. Still, on her self-titled debut, Vitamin C managed to make a record that probably is an overlooked pop gem!

This is pure pop perfection at it's finest. You've got a wide variety of all kinds of genres rolled into one...some more catchier than others.

"Me Myself & I" is a fun tune that pokes fun at making it on one's own.

"Not That Kind of Girl" has a rock-tinged Vitamin C going all out.

"Do What You Wanna Do" samples some Digital Underground with some success, with Vitamin C crooning about how her fella doesn't need to be perfect to win her over.

"Girls Against Boys" is a fun, slightly random tune about waging war with the sexes. A great beat coupled with some somewhat out-of-place Japanese jibberish and you got a funky track.

"I Got You" is full of energy, with Vitamin C slowing down during the parts leading up to the chorus, where the song just comes alive with a strong beat.

A good CD to have to your pop collection.

1. "Smile (Rap featuring Lady Saw)" 3:58
2. "Turn Me On" 3:47
3. "Me, Myself & I" 3:57
4. "Unhappy Anniversary" 3:56
5. "Not That Kind of Girl (featuring Dan the Man)" 3:27
6. "Do What You Want to Do" 3:21
7. "Girls Against Boys (Rap featuring Count Bass D)" 4:16
8. "I Got You (featuring Waymon Boone)" 4:01
9. "Money" 3:47
10. "About Last Night" 4:01
11. "Fear of Flying" 3:16
12. "Graduation (Friends Forever)" 5:40

This cd will NOT disappoint. If you've never heard Russ Freeman and the Rippington's this is a great introduction to break you into their great sound. If you're a seasoned fan like myself, this is one you will wear out in no time. Every track is memorable, my personal faves are Take Me With You, Aspen and the title track, Curves Ahead. If you have a chance to see this group live, DO IT! There's nothing like their sound under a summer sky in an outdoor arena -- this is loving life!

Groovin' -- CD

BWB

2002 Warner Bros. Records

Amazon.com

This concept sounds like the set-up for a joke: What do you get when you cross three smooth-jazzers with topnotch straight-ahead players? Turns out Norman Brown, Kirk Whalum, and Rick Braun have the last laugh and a *** good time. While they may be three of the most distinct stylists in smooth jazz, they had to turn up the pots to cook with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Gregory Hutchinson. Keyboardist Ricky Peterson, maybe the funkiest organist in contemporary jazz outside of Larry Goldings, plays a producing role and is probably the MVP of BWB. The players aren't the only stars. The impeccable choice of 10 well-known cover tunes adds to an unapologetically fun record that allows B, W, and B to stretch out much more than they do on other recordings. Braun quotes Freddie Hubbard on "Povo," while Whalum explores Cannonball Adderley on "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," and Brown pays back Wes Montgomery throughout the proceedings. From the sexually charged "Let's Do It Again," featuring a purring Dee Dee Bridgewater and a scatting Brown, to the inspired arrangements of Alicia Keys's "A Woman's Worth" and D'Angelo's "Brown Sugar," there are no holes in any of these grooves. --Mark Ruffin

Additional personnel includes: Dee Dee Bridgewater (vocals); Michael Campbell (guitar); Ricky Peterson (Fender Rhodes, Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); Christian McBride (bass); Gregory Hutchinson (drums); Bashiri Johnson (percussion).

In The BuzzBag -- CD

The Brooklyn Funk Essentials

1998 Shanachie Records

Their moniker is deceptive because this huge (23-piece) outfit deals in everything from global dub ("Istanbul Twilight") to Middle-Eastern bass-and-drums ("By and Bye"). While this far-flung stylistic sampling might result in havoc, these folks keep it real by focusing on the groove. When they do kick into a straight-ahead funk riff on the title track, even this is peppered with their clever melding of Eastern motifs and dancehall vocals. This is something else, and that's a good thing. ~ Tim Sheridan

Olivia Newton-John: Gold is a double album of Olivia Newton-John's greatest hits that was released in 2005. The album contains all but one of Olivia's solo Billboard Hot 100 hits (excluding 'I Need Love') and is the first CD to contain the track 'Fool Country' (a b-side to 'Magic' and contained in the film Xanadu, but not available on the soundtrack). The album is considered the most thorough of all of Olivia's many compilation albums.

Olivia Newton-John is best known for playing schoolgirl Sandy Olsson in the film adaptation of Grease (1978), alongside John Travolta, and the songs she performed for the soundtrack. "You're the One That I Want" and "Summer Nights" (both with Travolta), and "Hopelessly Devoted to You" were all Top 5 hits from the album, with "You're the One That I Want" topping the UK and US charts and selling two million copies in each country. Prior to this breakthrough, Newton-John had already been a very successful singer. If You Love Me, Let Me Know (1974) and Have You Never Been Mellow (1975) were chart-topping albums, while "I Honestly Love You" and "Have You Never Been Mellow" topped the Hot 100. She had also enjoyed nine No.1s on the Adult Contemporary chart, and seven Top 10s in the Country chart.

After Grease, "A Little More Love" and "Magic" were both huge hits that showed a more adventurous style. Her most successful single ever, "Physical", topped the Hot 100 for a record 10 weeks in 1981, eventually going double platinum (as did the accompanying album of the same name). "Make a Move on Me", "Heart Attack" and "Twist of Fate" were further big hits for Newton-John, but after she took a break to have a child, she struggled to regain her audience. She was treated for breast cancer in the early 90s, an experience that prompted Newton-John to campaign in aid of cancer awareness charities. In recent years she has focussed on family life, occasionally releasing spiritual or Christmas albums in Australia.

Here's The Deal -- CD

Liquid Soul

2000 Shanachie Records

Amazon.com

Frequently identified as an acid-jazz ensemble, the Chicago-rooted collective known as Liquid Soul might be more accurately viewed as a pure funk band. They're energized by a wonderfully wayward, freewheeling spirit again on Here's the Deal, the group's third release. Deal follows 1998's Make Some Noise and their eponymous 1996 debut with another swinging assortment of house-party grooves anchored by Liquid Soul's horn-based frontline--including saxophonist Mars Williams (whose far-flung associations run from Anthony Braxton to Ministry to the Sun Ra Project, which Williams leads with Ken Vandermark), trumpeter Ron Haynes, and trombonist John Janowiak. The 12 selections on Deal (five recorded live) range from funk-heavy rap ("Sure Fire One," "Show Me") to nearly conventional R&B with jazzed-up, Liquid Soul twists ("Sex Tablet," "Rocket Scientist") to a flavorful, Latin-tinged ode to Dizzy Gillespie ("The Diz"). Simone, daughter of Nina Simone, sets two tracks aglow with soulful vocals ("Stop by Monie's," "Dysfunction"). Yet the recording's most involving tracks (along with drummer Dan Leali's Jeff Beck-flavored "Everybody's Got One") are the melded "Sweet Pea" and "Donkey Punch," a reeling, freestyle exercise that cross-pollinates bop, hip-hop, rock and an Asian netherworld before flinging you into a swirl of horn-driven industrial fusion. Definitely worth a listen. --Terry Wood

Yeah, I've got a TON of Vinyl and a Shit Load of CD's. :teasing-tease: I have more vinyl than CD's, but it seems the CD's are catching up for now!

I don't have an actual count, yet. But I hope to this summer, when I build some shelving.

I also have approximately 2500 DVD's. That is the only medium that I have a clue on how many I have.

Gap Gold - The Best of The Gap Band -- CD ..... :happy-partydance:

The Gap Band

1987/1990 Mercury Records

Best Early 80s Industrial Funk, October 6, 2005
By Pablo Parks "Pablo" (Bayonet Point, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gap Gold (Audio CD)

The Houston based "Gap Band" brought the best hard charging funk in the early 80s. All praise the Wilson brothers for their outstanding instrumental and vocal work evident on this bang up CD. Best tracks are "Burn Rubber", "Shake" and "Early in the Morning". "You Dropped the Bomb on Me" and "The Party Train" are club favorites and very popular outside of the funk scene. There are a few slower R&B numbers that work well especially "Outstanding" which also describes this collection.

Track listing

1. Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)
2. Outstanding
3. I Don't Believe You Want to Get up and Dance (Oops!)
4. Party Train
5. Stay With Me
6. You Dropped a Bomb on Me
