VI -- CD

Urban Knights

2005 Narada Jazz

Amazon.com

Funky urban contemporary jazz by the Chicago-based quintet Urban Knights shows off the robust vitality they continue conjure up in the genre. At the center of the set is Wayne Shorter's "Footprints," their version of which perfectly demonstrates an ability to blend a modernist composition with utterly fresh sounds. Nick Bisesi's flute hovers in the air over the gently punchy rhythm section, all the while immersed in the atmospherics of Kevin Rudolph's keyboards washes. Elsewhere they pay homage to a number of their forebears, opening the disc with Stanley Clarke's "School Days" and inviting guest Ramsey Lewis to play grand piano on his own "Memórias Belas." --David Greenberger

Mostly the B-side stuff. I have some other stuff not on these albums too that are good.

I think Shintaro is one of their best songs. I can see why it wasn't on Cargo, but it's as good as any of the other tracks (if not better) on that album.

I love Colin Hay, but I'm thinking more and more Greg Ham was probably the best talent of that group. Sucks he's gone. IMO, Ham and Hay (and maybe Strykert for his playing) aren't as replaceable as the others.

The Journey -- CD

Earl Klugh

1997 Warner Bros. Records

Seven-time Grammy nominee and Grammy Award winner Earl Klugh presents a collection of finely-crafted, highly listenable compositions on THE JOURNEY. With his characteristic warm, nylon-string sound, Klugh improvises fluently throughout this recording. He lays down subtly phrased, highly melodic solos over a variety of smooth grooves which range in flavor from easy, open sambas to relaxed, R&B-tinged ballads. Klugh's brilliant musicality shines through from the beginning of THE JOURNEY to the end.

Track Listing:

All Through the Night

4 Minute Samba
Sneakin' Out of Here

Editorial Review . . . .
"Roll On is JJ Cale's first batch of new solo material since 2004's To Tulsa and Back and comes on the heels of his gold selling 2006 collaboration with Eric Clapton, The Road to Escondito,] which also earned him his first Grammy. Comprised of 12 new songs, including the previously unreleased title track recorded with Eric Clapton, Roll On finds Cale still in love with making music and passionately creating future classics that he'll one day tuck into his very own chapter of the Great American Songbook."

Boingo Alive - Cleebration of A Decade - 1979-1988 -- 2 CD Set

Oingo Boingo

1988 MCA Records

All Your Music Collection Needs Right Here August 10, 2000
By Peter A. Greene VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD

This is not a true "live" album in the classic sense. The band is in the studio, but they played down the set "live" rather than engineering and layering the heck out of it.

So what you get are the best songs in their book at the time, played tight, hard and with extra bite. Many of the cuts here are head and shoulders above the "original" album cuts (and I loved those). Uptempo, with a nice horn punch and a surprising variety of styles and sounds; there isn't a dog on either disc. Lots of bites, but with more tasty pop hooks than any colection around. If you're considering adding some boingo to your cd colection, this is the perfect place to start.

1. "Dead Man's Party" Dead Man's Party (1985) 6:22
2. "Dead or Alive" Good for Your Soul (1983) 4:04

Oingo-Boingo... a band I was in that used sequenced backing tracks on about a third of our material tried to do "Dead Man's Party". We couldn't do it. That song has the most bizarre time signatures and meters, even with trying to write out the music beat by beat, the guitarist and I were completely baffled (we shared sequencing duties). Weird, weird song.

That was my first (known) listen to that CD and I can see what you're saying. I mainly picked it up because of "Danny Elfman" and his friendship with our very own MattB! :eek:bscene-drinkingcheers:

Interesting music to say the least!
