Legend - The Best of -- Remastered CD

Bob Marley and the Wailers

1984/2002 Island Records

Amazon.com essential recording

Even as greatest hits packages go, this is an utter gem. Every song is inspired, in a class of its own, whether the real version of "I Shot the Sheriff," the hymnlike "No Woman, No Cry," or the sheer joy of "Jamming." Even allowing that Marley never wrote any bad material, then Legend is still the crème de la crème, the heart and soul of the Jamaican people packed into one five-inch compact disc. He was unique, and the message of this record, more than any other, is that he died far too soon. --Chris Nickson

By Jason Stein (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)

This review is from: Simply Red - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)

Unfortunately, Simply Red only had a couple of hits in America, namely "Holding Back The Years", "Money's Too Tight To Mention" and "If You Don't Know Me By Now." However, as this fantastic compilation attests, they are much more than just three hits. This greatest hits package has everything a casual fan would want. At 15 tracks it's well worth the money. Plus, no one can sing like Hucknall can. Pure white soul, and great music that already sounds classic. This is a must have for any rock collector.

"Holding Back The Years" (Mick Hucknall/Neil Moss) - 4:12
"Money's Too Tight To Mention" (John Valentine/William Valentine) - 4:29
"The Right Thing" (Hucknall) - 4:22
"It's Only Love" (Jimmy Cameron/Vella Cameron) - 3:52
"A New Flame" (Hucknall) - 3:58
"You've Got It" (Hucknall/Lamont Dozier) - 3:58

VH1 Storytellers -- CD

Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson

2002 American Recordings

2 legends doing what they do best, February 26, 2005
By DanD - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)

This is one of those intimate, legendary concerts that people dream of attending. And while you probably weren't there, you will at least FEEL like you were there, as you listen to this CD--all the songs, all the anecdotes, all the banter...it's captured on VH1 STORYTELLERS, one of the best CDs you could ever hope to purchase.

How good is this album? Well, if the 5-star rating wasn't evidence enough, and if the presence of two of the best singer/songwriters ever isn't enough, the how about a recap of the album's highlights: namely, all fifteen tracks. Two voices, two guitars...songs such as "Ghost Riders in the Sky" and "Funny How Time Slips Away" are given new life, with other classics (such as "Crazy," "Always on My Mind," "Folsom Prison Blues," "Don't Take Your Guns to Town," and "Me and Paul") revitalized and sounding as sweet as ever. Cash's haunting Vietnam-era track "Drive On" blends in perfectly with Willie's autobiographical "Me and Paul"--two songs of different subjects, with different atmospheres, blending together because they are performed by two friends.

Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson are the best music can get, and they're on one album. Can you resist? Probably. But why the heck would you want to?

1. (Ghost) Riders In The Sky
2. Worried Man
3. Family Bible
4. Don't Take Your Guns To Town

T.O.P. -- CD

Tower of Power

1993 EPIC Records

excellent return to their funky East Bay Grease Roots November 11, 1998
By DOCSBREW@AOL.COM
Format:Audio CD

I came in contact with this album through blind luck. A freind of mine who knew of my love for their horns turned me onto this album. It is a good mixture of funky tunes with their great horn section, and some slow love ballads that are reminiscent of "You're still a young man" and "So very hard to go". Overall, I think it is one of their best albums ever that unfortunately didn't get a lot of commercial air play but is still outstanding for the T.O.P. fan or someone who loves horns and the funky sound of the East Bay.

All songs written by Emilio Castillo and Stephen "Doc" Kupka unless otherwise noted.

"Soul With A Capital 'S'" - 4:59
"It All Comes Back" - 3:55 (Adams, Jason, Kent, McCurry)

My Favorite Album

This review is from: Concert in the Park (Audio CD)

Where to begin! Let me first say that I am a huge fan of Paul Simon, so I'm probably not the most objective opinion... That said, Paul Simon's Concert In The Park is my favorite CD for a couple reasons: It is a great introduction to Simon for those two people on earth unfamiliar with his work, and, more important, it offers brilliant renditions of both Simon's greatest hits from the Garfunkel years as well as new takes of his lesser known songs. I love the African and South American sounds Simon explores, I love the band that's behind him, but most of all, I loooove the music! Buy this CD--I promise you won't be sorry.

Shaman -- CD

Santana

2002 Arista Records

Amazon.com

How could Carlos Santana hope to follow the massive comeback album Supernatural? The solution he settled upon was to once again pull in as many guest artists as possible. Shaman features a slew of stars, but, despite their presence, the instrumental "Victory Is Won" is the standout track here, as Santana blazes through an exhibition of his patented fusion of Latin and rock. In contrast, the sugary pop single "The Game of Love," sung by Michelle Branch, illustrates the lack of consistency that mars the album. Only Ozomatli and Macy Gray seem to totally get Santana. That said, his cover of Angelique Kidjo's "Adouma" is storming, and Santana stands strong when he ventures into world-music territory ("Foo Foo," "Aye, Aye"). However, if the celebrated guitarist had concentrated a little more on who he is and not on who he believes people would like him to be, he'd have made a better album. --Jake Barnes

ROAD TESTED (LIVE) -- 2 CD Set

Bonnie Raitt

1995 Capitol Records

Amazon.com

A sense of self-confidence permeates Road Tested. If the '70s were marked by promise and the '80s by disappointment, the '90s, thanks to three smash studio albums, have been sheer triumph for Raitt, and she sounds damned satisfied. Her first live recording after 24 years in the business, Road Tested is an all-things-to-all-people effort, unsurprising given its creator has become all things to an awful lot of people. Steadfast favorites, '90s hits, and fresh additions to her repertoire are spiced by guest appearances by Bruce Hornsby, Ruth Brown, Charles Brown, Jackson Browne, Kim Wilson, and Bryan Adams. Raitt is in fine voice, her playing is great, and the band is solid. What's missing? Maybe some of that vanquished brashness and desperation. --Steve Stolder

Up All Night -- CD

The John Scofield Band

2003 Verve Records

The John Scofield Band is better than ever! May 25, 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD

I have been a long-term fan of John Scofield. I think his transition into the more funk-sample-delic music raised a few eyebrows, but I dont know anyone who cant hear the musical genius in all of his works. This latest endeavor, UP ALL NIGHT has been in my CD changer since it came out! The rich layering of different sounds and grooves keeps each song sounding new each time I hear it. Avi Bortnick and Adam Deitch could be two of the most rythmic players on the scene there today, and I love the new element that Andy hess brings into the mix...John has an amazing band that he obviously feels connected to because so much of this record was written as a team and improvised in the studio -- The freshness of all the music is beyond apparent! I loved überjam, and I loved A Go Go, but I think that this latest record might be my favorite of his groove-based albums so far -- Scofield is getting really comfortable in this style and his masterful techniques and visions are shining brighter than ever!

Vertical Vision -- CD

Christian McBride Band

2003 Warner Bros. Records

The celebrated jazz educator, master bassist, composer, and arranger, Christian McBride provides a new recording, told in a language of blazing originality. Vertical Vision is a multi-layered musical story that features beautiful solos, great grooves, funky riffs, and virtuosic performances by each bandmember. The recording also reveals McBride's passion for strong writing, brilliant accompaniment, and eclectic melodic voicings that stay with listeners long after the record ends. On this, his debut for Warner Brothers Jazz, McBride creates a dazzling weave of passionate rhythms, musical forms, and bass voicings with his longtime bandmate Ron Blake on saxophones and flute. Geoff Keezer on piano and keyboards, Terreon Gully on drums, David Gilmore on both acoustic and electric guitars, and Danny Sadownick on percussion add their flavorful interpretations, which elevate their performances to another level at each subsequent listen. The songs were inspired by and reflect a variety of subjects including the beautiful original "Song for Maya," which is played superbly by the ensemble and features the splendid flute work of Ron Blake. It is the most beautiful of all and the one that makes its way, like the family it has come to represent, into your heart. "Lejos de Usted" -- which is filled with beautiful horn voices and the vertical visions of McBride on acoustic bass -- is overflowing with Latin nuance and it is there, melding the borders between jazz and Latin rhythms. Top picks: "Technicolor Nightmare,""Tahitian Pearl," "Song for Maya," and "Boogie Woogie Waltz." Overall, Vertical Vision is a masterpiece that is beautiful, spirited, brimming with energy, and meets the same high standards set and achieved on Sci-Fi. ~ Paula Edelstein

Time Out -- CD

The Dave Brubeck Quartet

1959/1997 Columbia Legacy Records

Amazon.com essential recording

Boasting the first jazz instrumental to sell a million copies, the Paul Desmond-penned "Take Five," Time Out captures the celebrated jazz quartet at the height of both its popularity and its powers. Recorded in 1959, the album combines superb performances by pianist Brubeck, alto saxophonist Desmond, drummer Joe Morrello and bassist Gene Wright. Along with "Take Five," the album features another one of the group's signature compositions, "Blue Rondo a la Turk." Though influenced by the West Coast-cool school, Brubeck's greatest interest and contribution to jazz was the use of irregular meters in composition, which he did with great flair. Much of the band's appeal is due to Desmond, whose airy tone and fluid attack often carried the band's already strong performances to another level. Together, he and Brubeck proved one of the most potent pairings of the era. --Fred Goodman

Love Songs -- CD

Miles Davis

1999 Columbia Legacy

Fundamental collection!, December 25, 2004
By Hiram Gomez Pardo (Valencia, Venezuela) - See all my reviews
(HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Love Songs (Audio CD)

Since this album is an excellent compilation of several previous albums, from the first bars of every track you feel automatically the flight to another musical sphere .
Davis was a poet with intense sense of the rapture and Bacchic expression all the way .
I fall in love too easily is a love statement.
I thought about you is simply a landmark in the jazz . The smooth warmth and the sliding sound trumpet of Davis prepares to a encounter with Venus . You feel the one million per cent commitment of M.D. playing this milestone piece.
My ship is an amazing piece .It was composed by Ira Gershwin and Davis is simply floating in this aural atmosphere.
Someday my prince will come is a theme with variations . Dynamic flows and wonderful mood.
And we come to one of the highest peaks of the CD: Stella by starlight does not need presentation. Any medium melomaniac will enjoy with sublime joy this golden version .

But the jewel of the crown is definitively My funny Valentine one of the three best themes in jazz any age .Recorded live in Lincoln Center New York on January 12 , 1964 this version simply has no equal in its style . Davis in the peak of his musical powers . But the rest of the team is : Ron Carter in the bass , Herbie Hancock in the piano and Tony Williams in the drums . Expression and ravishing inspiration make of this theme by itself more than deserved the buying of this album.

A must for any lover jazz music .
