a great talents last work., December 26, 2009

THis woman was talented in a way that most modern singers can't even come close to.
And this was a great disc from her and more would have followed if she hadn't blown it all to the grave with drugs. Hard Drugs suck and I don't buy the argument that hard drugs made rock great , most of the best artists did their best work when they were not on heroin staring at a wall. Janis never made a bad album of any style and this is a seventies rock/pop disc that is still great. One can only wonder what great hits and songs would have flowed from her if she were still around. She'd be a grand dame of rock no doubt.

I feel like I found a gem in the haystack of one-shot albums. This is a high quality recording with great sound to match the powerful lyrics, vocals!!, and instruments (drums and guitar are ripping). There is one ballad, but mostly high energy music with each song distinctly it's own and literally giving you "Bigger, Better, Faster, More!". It's sad there is not "More!" albums from this band, but I sure am happy I found this album.

"Train" (Perry) – 3:42

"What's Up?" (Perry) – 4:55
"Pleasantly Blue" (Perry) – 2:28

This review is from: Lady & Gentlemen (Audio CD)

I think this is a really great album. If you like COUNTRY, not country-pop, not country-rock, this album is for you. It's very classic country. The songs are relatively short and tell simple stories. LeAnn's voice shines on this album like it hasn't before. I really think her voice has matured and is in it's prime right now. She's always had a strong voice but I think it's at its best right now.

The standout songs for me are "16 Tons" "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" and "I Can't Be Myself." But the song I keep going back to is "Help Me Make It Through The Night." That is a BEAUTIFUL song and LeAnn sings it with so much emotion.

1. "Swingin'" John Anderson, Lionel Delmore 3:02
2. "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" Wayne Duncan, Freddy Fender, Huey P. Meaux 4:06
3. "The Only Mama That'll Walk The Line" Jimmy Bryant 2:39
4. "I Can't Be Myself" Merle Haggard 3:12
5. "16 Tons" George S. Davis 2:42
6. "Help Me Make It Through the Night" Kris Kristofferson 3:01
7. "Rose Colored Glasses" John Conlee, George Baber 3:06
8. "A Good Hearted Woman" Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson 3:40
9. "When I Call Your Name" Vince Gill, Tim DuBois 3:41

Different Light -- CD

Bangles

1986/1990 Columbia Records

By Thomas Magnum (NJ, USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)

The Bangles' first album was full of shiny songs steeped in 60's British Invasion sounds. For their follow-up, Different Light, the band added some modern twists to the music for a more modern sound. The results turned into the biggest album of their career. The first single from the album, Jules Shear's "If She Knew What She Wants" is a sugary song with some great vocal harmonies. The song was a Top 40 hit, but it was the album's second single that would propel the band to superstar status. "Manic Monday" was penned by Prince under the pseudonym Christopher. It was said that Prince loved the band's first album and was enamored with Susannah Hoffs so he wrote the song for her. Whatever the reasons, the song is a perfect piece of pop bubblegum that practically drips with sunshine. The song peaked at number two, but was to be outdone by a song that is pure 80's, "Walk Like An Egyptian". The song with its goofy lyrics and equally goofy video surged to number one and was the number one overall single for 1986. The song is generally ridiculed, but one can't deny that it is catchy as hell. Other good songs include the luminescent "Walk Down Your Street", "Not For You", the title track and a pretty good cover of Big Star's "September Gurls".

1. "Manic Monday" "Christopher" (Prince) 3:06
2. "In a Different Light" Susanna Hoffs, Vicki Peterson 2:52
3. "Walking Down Your Street" Louis Gutierrez, Hoffs, David Kahne 3:04
4. "Walk Like an Egyptian" Liam Sternberg 3:24
5. "Standing in the Hallway" Hoffs, Kahne, Debbi Peterson, V. Peterson 2:56
6. "Return Post" Hoffs, V. Peterson 4:22
7. "If She Knew What She Wants" (cover of Jules Shear, 1985) Jules Shear 3:49
8. "Let It Go" Hoffs, D. Peterson, V. Peterson, Michael Steele 2:32
9. "September Gurls" (cover of Big Star, 1974) Alex Chilton 2:45
10. "Angels Don't Fall in Love" Hoffs, V. Peterson 3:23
11. "Following" Steele 3:21
12. "Not Like You" Hoffs, Kahne, D. Peterson 3:06

This review is from: Live in Paris (Audio CD)

This album runs the risk of being classified a Schedule 1 drug by the FDA for its remarkable addictive potential. Yes, Diana Krall is like aural heroin on this electrifying CD. Her pacing, her rich, sultry voice and her impeccable pianistic skills shine like very few artists around today. I have played piano for nearly 50 years (God, am I THAT old?) and find that I simply MUST play along with this album every time I listen to it. This is also one of the best recorded live albums I have ever heard from an audiophile perspective. My system seduces me into believing that she is literally playing in my living room along with her great backup musicians. I saw her live at the Algonquin Hotel in New York about 5 years ago and the verve, swing and intimacy that I heard at that concert are clearly in evidence here on this cd. It looks like this brief review will be one of many 5 star ones for this album. It is certain to be a classic. Buy one, but if you don't have any money, this album is so good...

"I Love Being Here With You" (Peggy Lee, William Schluger) – 5:12
"Let's Fall in Love" (Harold Arlen, Ted Koehler) – 4:34

Normal As Blueberry Pie { A Tribute To Doris Day } -- CD

Nelly McKay

2009 Verve Records

Product Description

Producing, arranging and performing this album is for McKay the natural outcome of years of enraptured listening to Ms. Day's music. "She was - and still is - ahead of her time". Nellie handpicked these songs from over 600 recordings. McKay has a very special connection to this cultural icon - the # 1 female box office star of all time and one of the most prolific recording artists in history - Nellie received the Doris Day Music Award in 2005 and is one of the few people in the last 30 years to be granted an interview with Ms. Day. Nellie's Verve debut is a sophisticated but accessible recording with spare and tasteful arrangements that clearly put the focus on the songs and McKay's exquisite vocal stylings. McKay's fresh take on this music is smartly delivered with a curtsy to Doris, a nod to convention, and a unique twist all her own. An actress (Theater World Award-winner in Three Penny Opera on Broadway), writer and activist (sharing Ms. Day's passion for the animal welfare movement) Nellie is a welcome addition to the rich legacy of great women artists on Verve.

Peter White

Confidentially, This Is A Hit! April 17, 2004
By J.A. Johnson
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase

This is Peter White's best effort since Perfect Moment was released in 1998. In tracks such as Talkin' Bout Love, How Does It Feel, and Confidential, he gives us the familiar and beautiful Peter White touch. His playing is up front and in the lead, with the rest of the music surrounding his melodies, complementing and contrasting them.

In other tunes such as, Are You Mine, Lost Without Your Love and Endless Journey, he is content to let other artists have the spotlight. Of special note are Mindi Abair, Brian Culbertson, Michael Paulo and David Sparkman. Chris Botti's playing on Stormfront is the perfect compliment to Peter's gentle, understated rhythm.

This is a mature and beautiful collection of music and is highly recommended. Bravo, Peter White!

Benny In Brussels - Vol. 1 & 2 -- Remastered CD

Benny Goodman

1958/2001 Columbia/Collectibles Records

Classic Benny, Rare Recording January 9, 2002
By Mark Borchers
Format:Audio CD

The availability of this CD is great news for fans of the King of Swing. You won't see this hard-to-find set at your local superstore.

These recordings were made during the World's Fair in Brussels around 1958. Benny put an orchestra together to play in the American pavillion. According to the liner notes, it was a tremedous hit and gave a tremendous boost to America's languishing reputation in the arts.

The significant thing about this recording is that it's classic Goodman style, but the recording quality is light years better than the recordings you've heard from his heyday in the '30's and '40's. The band is crisp and driving, and Benny's virtuoso solos show even more artistry, if possible, than his earlier material. Benny's version of "One O'Clock Jump" would make Count Basie proud, and by itself makes the CD worth buying.

This CD is a fantastic find for Goodman fans - don't miss it!

2. Don't Be That Way
3. Hallelujah
4. Obsession

Breakfast Dance and Barbecue -- Remastered CD

Count Basie and his Orchestra featuring Joe Williams

1958/2001 Roulette Jazz

Best CD of the Best Basie Band, October 5, 2001
By Chris Liakos Basie Jazz (Alpharetta, Georgia United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Breakfast Dance & Barbecue (Audio CD)

In my opinion the Basie band in 1959-1961 was the greatest of his second generation orchestras. All 16 bandsmen were individually talented and played swinging arrangements with cohesion and enthusiasm. There were no second or third horns; all were first chair musicians capable of memorable solos. There was not a slouch in the bunch. When they played as an ensemble, they were awesome.

This CD is taken from a tape of a breakfast dance for the Disc Jockeys of America convention on May 31, 1959. The dance for 2000+ people started at 2am and ended at 7am. Basie and his band had been booked at Birdland that week. The band flew to Miami late at night, played the gig and then returned to NYC in time for their scheduled performance at Birdland that evening.

This CD is a recording of the entire dance program as it was presented at the Americana Hotel, start to finish. The remastering is superb; you feel like you are right there on the dance floor. The band is understandably a little stiff at first, but they warm to the occassion quickly. After a few tracks they hit a groove like I have never before on any Basie CD. This is Basie and the Basie band at its finest. I have never heard Joe Williams sing better.

This Basie band loved to shout! Check out "Splanky", "Cherry Point", "Roll em Pete", "Back to the Apple" and "Everyday I Have The Blues". The closing theme "One O'Clock Jump" is 3:40 minutes and features Sweets Edison minus mute. There are 18 tracks total; all in dance tempos. It is said that Basie fed upon the energies of those listening and particularly from dancers. It must have been some morning.

Thank you Roulette for releasing this. The only downer are Chris Sheridan's album notes. Mr. Sheridan does his usual accurate recount of history and attention to detail, but his use of words like antiphony, onamatopoeic and spiky detract from his review. But then my advice is don't read -- just listen, remember and enjoy what music used to be.

Indeed, there were many who thought that it would take an event as cataclysmic as the one described in the album title to get these seminal '70s soft-rockers back together. But here they are, revisiting some of their most beloved tunes as well as four new ones, on this mostly live, largely acoustic disc. Frey, Henley, Walsh, Schmit, and Felder tackle iconic Eagles standards like "Hotel California," "Tequila Sunrise," "Take It Easy," "Desperado," and "Life in the Fast Lane" and new tunes like "Get Over It" and "Love Will Keep Us Alive" with the smoothly cocky assurance that originally made them icons. --Scott Schinder

Greatest Hits -- CD

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

1993 MCA Records

Amazon.com

He's sold millions of albums, filled arenas, and hobnobbed with George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison, but Tom Petty's driving heartland rock has often been taken for granted by the same critics who hail John Mellencamp as a genius. Greatest Hits is an airtight argument for Petty's own greatness. Starting with "American Girl," the rollicking, Byrds-inspired single from Petty's first album in 1976, this compilation presents a chronological overview of the guitarist-vocalist's career with and without the Heartbreakers, also chronically underrated as one of today's best bands. Every one of the 16 older tracks is a well-crafted gem, full of solid guitar hooks ("Here Comes My Girl"), arresting images ("Don't Come Around Here No More") and simple but poetic lyrics ("The Waiting").

Petty isn't an innovator; he's a talented craftsman with impeccable taste and a strong sense of rock history, internalizing influences ranging from the Beatles' psychedelic masterpiece, Revolver, to the best of '70s punk. (It's interesting to remember that early efforts such as "Refugee" and "Don't Do Me Like That" first won Petty attention as a New Wave artist). With his Dylanesque vocals and chiming 12-string guitars, Petty is more often linked these days with the sounds of the '60s. But recent tunes such as "Learning to Fly" and "Into the Great Wide Open" are as smart, relevant and (dare I say) alternative as anything in MTV's Buzz Bin. --Jim DeRogatis

The Rolling Stone Women In Rock Collection -- 3 CD Box Set

If you like rock and roll...you'll love this., January 3, 2000

This review is from: The Rolling Stone Women In Rock Collection (Audio CD)

What a great CD! I have a radio show that focuses on women in music, and I got this CD for christmas this year. I was more impressed with it after I listened to it, finding gems like Belly's "Feed the Tree," Lucinda Williams' "Side of the Road," Gladys Knight and the Pips' "Midnight Train to Georgia" and even Dionne Warwick's "Walk on By" sounding even better among other top women's music of the times. Rolling Stone shows a strong interest in women's music not only through this album but also through their book 'Women in Rock' which goes hand in hand with this album (check it out too). Some of the people Rolling Stone could've included in this compilation are Joni Mitchell (I am really surprised she doesn't appear on here), Siouxie Sioux, Karen Carpenter, and Liz Phair, but the collection they do have should only be added to, nothing should be removed. This is an anthology for women of our times, an anthology of anyone who likes rock and roll, and it should be a staple in any music lover's collection.

The Wall -- 2 CD Set

Pink Floyd

1979 Pink Floyd/Columbia Records

Amazon.com essential recording

The Wall is less a collection of songs than a single work, which is sometimes frustrating; the plot lacks enough coherence to hold the snippets of music together. However, there are occasional flashes of brilliance on what arguably ranks as Pink Floyd's most ambitious project. Most of these come from the fully developed songs, which have become classics in their own right; "Hey You," "Mother," and especially "Comfortably Numb" are subtly incredible pieces of music. Though complex, they move at a relaxed pace, allowing the listener to absorb them slowly; this kind of pacing was something Pink Floyd excelled at. Also worth noting is the "Another Brick in the Wall/The Happiest Days of Our Lives" medley, which has become a staple of rock radio. --Genevieve Williams

I'm finally pulling my head out of my *ss and re-joining life, and spent this weekend cleaning my house which had been completely neglected since getting fired two years ago.
As I cleaned my dining room table, I found an unopened package from Amazon, and it was this disc. I kept the email notice that it'd been shipped, but I never saw it, d'Oh! The price sticker on the disc itself said "$41.99" and I panicked (42 dollars for a Bob James disc?!?!?!) but the email said I'd paid $1.60, plus $2.98 shipping, so I feel better.

Nice find! I really, really like that album. :handgestures-thumbup: I think I paid $3 or $4 for my copy. Worth every penny, IMHO!

Good news on the House Cleaning too. I know how it can be though. I'd let mine go for a long time and would hire someone to come in once a month or so, but they couldn't get to everything in 8 hours. So, things went ignored. After my Mom passed away last November, I've been cleaning the whole house and purging regularly. It sure makes me feel better and my "company" appreciates it, I'm sure. I'm repainting the interior this summer........and fall .......and probably into the winter. LOL I can't wait!

Good for you Botch. :text-bravo: Now, sit back and relax to some fantastic Bob James Music! :eek:bscene-drinkingcheers:

Heroes -- CD

Willie Nelson

2012 Sony Legacy

Willie Nelson Shows No Sign Of Slowing Down. May 15, 2012
By M. Mariba TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD

Legendary country singer-songwriter Willie Nelson is back in 2012 with a great new album titled 'Heroes'. At the age of 79, Willie Nelson shows no sign of slowing down. He collaborated very well with Wynton Marsailes & Eric Clapton in 2011 (a wonderful live CD release) & he's no different here with an uncompromising country CD (14 tracks) release. It's a home coming release with Legacy Records for him with 12 brand new songs & an interesting rock band Pearl Jam's cover "Just Breathe" as well as "The Scientist" from Coldplay's 2002 album. He has guest musicians including Snoop Dogg, Kris Kristofferson & Jamey Johnson in "Roll Me Up" & "Hero" ; Sheryl Crow in "Come To The House"; Merle Haggard; Billy Joe Shaver; Ray Price & his two sons Lukas & Micah Nelson. Song compositions are great, execution & production immaculate as the legend Willie Nelson would. Stand-outs/gems/solid tracks include "A Horse Called Music" (beautiful opening track with wonderful melody, vocals & harmonies. A duet with Merle Haggard), "No Place To Fly" (a great duet with son Lukas Nelson : wonderful melody, accordion & harmonies) & "The Sound Of Your Memory" (another great duet with Lucas Nelson). Great tracks include "Roll Me Up" (up-tempo track with great guitar), "That's All There Is To This Song", "Every Time He Drinks He Thinks Of Her" (wonderful rhythm guitar & duet with Lukas Nelson), "Come On Up To The House" (featuring Sheryl Crow & Lukas Nelson), "Hero" (great violin & harmonica featuring Jamey Johnson & Billy Joe Shaver and this is where the title of this album comes from), "My Window Faces Tha South" (a hunky-tonky/bluesy track with great piano featuring Lukas Nelson), "Cold War With You" (slow-tempo bluesy-country track featuring Lukas Nelson & Ray Price), "Just Breathe" (up-tempo track with a great melody, harmonica & vocals featuring Lukas Nelson), "Come On Black Jesus" (gospelly country track with great harmonica featuring Lukas & Micah Nelson. Sound of the track reminiscent of the late country singer Johnny Cash singing gospel) & "The Scientist" (slow-tempo track, song from Coldplay's 2002 album). Okay track is "Home In San Antone" (a hunky-tonky/bluesy track).

On overall, you have quite a winner here from the legendary Willie Nelson in 'Heroes' album release, a highly recommended CD listening.

Its a great album, but when I read the title "Grand Piano Canyon" i guess I was expecting a reverby solo piece, a la George Winston. Its more classic BJ. (heh, I said "BJ"...)
