Best of WAR and More -- CD

WAR

1991 Avenue Records

Amazon.com

War peppers their music with Latin rhythms and instrumentations, mixing in elements of funk with oldies rock & roll to create a nonstop summer-block-party sound. Hits like "The Cisco Kid" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?" are characterized by the band's lower-register vocals and beg for a singalong. "Spill the Wine, " a hit during Eric Burden's tenure with War, lacks the freer, good-time feel of the later material, but "Low Rider, " a bottom-heavy salsa driven by a raunchy harmonica, remains one of the band's most popular songs. The Best of War ... and More goes beyond retro appeal, displaying a timeless quality. --Steve Gdula

His Band and the Street Choir -- CD

Van Morrison

1970/1990 Warner Bros. Records

Amazon.com

His Band and the Street Choir appeared at a time--1970--when Van Morrison was building on the great critical successes of Astral Weeks and Moondance. His third Warner Bros. album contains a number of radio-friendly tracks clearly aimed at the singles market and few clues of the serious, brooding melancholy of Astral Weeks. Kicking off with the jaunty "Domino," the album is generally dominated by uptempo swingers such as "Call Me Up in Dreamland," "Give Me a Kiss," and "Blue Money." The cover photography and liner notes by then wife Janet Planet reveal a smiling Morrison and hint at a newfound personal contentment. This mood did not last long after Van left the artists' community of Woodstock. But even here, in "I'll Be Your Lover Too" and "Crazy Face," there are moments that are essential listening for fans of his sullen splendor and mysticism. --Rob Stewart

Great Album!!

I always say, "Quincy called all his friends and asked it they wanted to make a record..... They all said yes!"
The liner notes say he choose "friends that he felt had 'God Given' talent". :angelic-green:

I think he's right! :bow-blue:

Gaucho -- DVD-A

Steely Dan

1980/2004 MCA Records

Gaucho on DVD-A, May 25, 2011
By Joe Appierto - See all my reviews

This review is from: Gaucho [DVD Audio] (DVD Audio)

This is one of my favorite DVD-A recordings because it's both a fine recording that highlights the benefits of the DVD-A medium (even in stereo which is how I listen to it) and musically. It's also one of my favorite Steely Dan albums. The price is competitive for an album of this quality and I believe it's a good choice for both music lovers and audiophiles. Heartily recommended.

Side one

"Babylon Sisters" – 5:55
"Hey Nineteen" – 5:10
"Glamour Profession" – 7:29

Side two

"Gaucho" – 5:32
"Time Out of Mind" – 4:14
"My Rival" – 4:34
"Third World Man" – 5:13

Hard Bargain -- Deluxe Edition CD/DVD

Emmylou Harris

2011 Nonesuch Records

Another winner from Emmylou April 26, 2011
By Polar Bear TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD

Hard Bargain is Emmylou Harris' first release in almost 3 years and it was worth the wait! Her vocals are smooth as honey and hugely emotive and her voice still has that irresistible frail breathlessness. The songs are well written with meaningful lyrics and the music, as always, is beautiful and intuitive. It's hard to believe there are only 3 musicians, including Harris, making all the music. Long, weeping fiddle notes and chunky, contemplative piano chords are balanced only by the occasional tentative brightness of a banjo or mandolin. The percussion is distant, if there at all, but always clever. "Darlin' Kate" is about her close friend Kate McGarrigle who died last year of cancer. "The Road" looks back to her formative years spent with the late Gram Parsons at the start of her career. "Big Black Dog" is inspired by her animal shelter philanthropy and is the only almost-happy song on the album. "My name is Emmett Till is the true story of a 14 year old black boy killed in Mississippi for talking to a white woman. Overall the strength and sincerity of Harris' songs make this just another reason to love and respect her.

"The Road" (Harris) – 5:31
"Home Sweet Home" (Harris) – 3:45
"My Name is Emmett Till" (Harris) – 4:53
"Goodnight Old World" (Harris, Will Jennings) – 3:55
"New Orleans" (Harris, Will Jennings) – 3:38
"Big Black Dog" (Harris) – 3:26
"Lonely Girl" (Harris) – 4:44
"Hard Bargain" (Ron Sexsmith) – 3:23
"Six White Cadillacs" (Harris, Will Jennings) – 3:22
"The Ship on His Arm" (Harris) – 4:46
"Darlin' Kate" (Harris) – 3:08
"Nobody" (Harris) – 5:04
"Cross Yourself" (Jay Joyce) – 3:36

Deluxe Edition includes a DVD that features six performances interspersed with interviews.

1. DVD: Six White Cadillacs
2. DVD: Goodnight Old World
3. DVD: Home Sweet Home
