Brand New Man -- CD

Brooks & Dunn

1991 Arista Records

Good Country December 2, 2002
By Russell Diederich VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD

There is nothing quite like this duo anywhere in music. Great harmonies, good country picking, and great songs. This album definitely set the tone for their career, and there was nowhere to go but up from here. If you like the new generation of Country music, then you should have this album in your collection. These boys mix upbeat shuffles with ballads covering a large range of music on just one album. There is nothing these two can't play.

The best song on the album is the closing ballad "Still In Love with You". They lyrics are shear poetry. Another great ballad is "Neon Moon". Again, they hit the nail on the head with "Lost and Found". For as good as their ballads are, their upbeat stuff is incredible as well. "Boot Scootin' Boogie" pretty much put them on the roadmap of Country music, but songs like "Cool Drink of Water" with its upbeat humor just show this band's versatility.

Country music has a bright future with bands like Brooks and Dunn making music of this caliber. Music like this is becoming more mainstream and popular. Garth Brooks might have started that movement, but artists like B&D, Alan Jackson, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are carrying that momentum with ease.

"Brand New Man" (Kix Brooks, Ronnie Dunn, Don Cook) – 2:59
"My Next Broken Heart" (Brooks, Dunn, Cook) – 2:56
"Cool Drink of Water" (Brooks, Cook) – 3:07
"Cheating on the Blues" (Brooks, Cook, Chick Rains) – 2:52
"Neon Moon" (Dunn) – 4:21
"Lost and Found" (Brooks, Cook) - 3:48
"I've Got a Lot to Learn" (Brooks, Dunn, Cook) – 2:55
"Boot Scootin' Boogie" (Dunn) – 3:18
"I'm No Good" (Brooks, Cook) – 3:08
"Still in Love with You" (Brooks, Dunn, Cook) – 3:35

Third Rock From The Sun -- CD

Joe Diffie

1994 Epic Records

diffie looking kinda spiffy, March 21, 2005
By the honorable (new jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Third Rock From The Sun (Audio CD)

for your money it doesn't get any better than when joe diffie sings "pickup man", "third rock from the sun" (the themesong), "junior's in love" (a classic), and the most hillarious song's i've ever heard: "good brown gravy" (with the bass singer echoing the chorus) and "the cows came home" (what a statement). these songs bring back great memories from my senior year of high school which was a fun time. however, i don't think i'll ever be putting good brown gravy in my hair anytime soon!

"Third Rock from the Sun" (Sterling Whipple, Tony Martin, John Greenebaum) – 3:04
"I'm in Love with a Capital 'U'" (Paul Nelson, Craig Wiseman) – 3:17
"That Road Not Taken" (Casey Kelly, Deborah Beasley) – 4:17
"Pickup Man" (Howard Perdew, Kerry Kurt Phillips) – 3:36
"So Help Me Girl" (H. Perdew, Andy Spooner) – 3:29
"Wild Blue Yonder" (Stacey Slate, Michael Higgins) – 3:53
"I'd Like to Have a Problem Like That" (Whipple, Martin, Greenebaum) – 3:20
"Junior's in Love" (Dennis Linde) – 3:09
"From Here on Out" (Howard Perdew, Carol Perdew, Monica Stiles) – 3:24
"Good Brown Gravy" (Billy Dean, Verlon Thompson, Bill Kenner) – 3:02

Three Dog Night

Excellent Album, September 25, 2001

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Harmony (Audio CD)

This is my favorite Three Dog Night album. It contains some of the best recordings of their career. Of course the hits are here "Never Been To Spain", "Family Of Man" and "An Old Fashioned Love Song" but there are others that are amazing also. Just give a listen to their remake of Stevie Wonder's "Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer" and Marvin Gaye's "You". I also think "My Impersonal Life" is one of their best songs. Lots of gems here that didn't wind up on their original Greatest Hits compilation. Most of the songs on this album do appear on their Anthology. Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, Chuck Negron and the band were jamming on this one.

"Never Been to Spain" (Hoyt Axton) – 3:43
"My Impersonal Life" (Terry Furlong) – 4:22
"An Old Fashioned Love Song" (Paul Williams) – 3:21
"Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer" (Stevie Wonder, Syreeta Wright) – 3:41
"Jam" (Three Dog Night) – 3:47
"You" (Jeffrey Bowen, Jack Goga, Ivy Hunter) – 3:00
"Night in the City" (Joni Mitchell) – 3:13
"Murder in My Heart for the Judge" (Jerry Miller, Don Stevenson) – 3:36
"Family of Man" (Jack Conrad, Williams) – 3:28
"Intro: Mistakes and Illusions" (poem by Paula Negron) / "Peace of Mind" (N. Woods) – 3:03

Come Together - Guitar Tribute to The Beatles -- CD

Various Artists

1993 NYC Records

Strictly speaking, this isn't just a guitar tribute to the Beatles, although stringed instruments that are plucked, strummed, and otherwise manipulated are in abundance, representing styles and sounds that will recall Django Reinhardt at one moment and the Mahavishnu Orchestra at the next. Toots Thielemans adds some astonishingly tasteful harmonica (and whistling) to "Yesterday" and Thomas Dawson's organ is almost a lead instrument on "Come Together." But it's the guitars (plus some superb bass) that make up the core of this delightful recording. Larry Coryell, Steve Khan, Ralph Towner, Adrian Belew, John Abercrombie, Allan Holdsworth, Toninho Horta (whose Brazilian-flavored rendition of "She's Leaving Home" is worth the price of admission by itself), and others do what they do best, and the results are revelatory and dazzlingly entertaining. This reviewer's favorite cut was Khan's medley of "Within You, Without You/Blue Jay Way," but that's just because it's that much more unexpected than anything else here. Mark Whitfield's lead work on the title cut, which is also the leadoff track, sets the bar pretty high for the rest of the CD, but everyone clears it and then some, each in his own way. One only wishes there'd been a follow-up album. ~ Bruce Eder

God Willin' & The Creek Don't Rise -- CD

Ray LaMontagne & The Pariah Dogs

2010 RCA Records

2010 release, the fourth album from the Grammy nominated and critically acclaimed singer/songwriter. Entirely self produced, the album was recorded in two weeks at LaMontagne's home in the woods of western Massachusetts. The newly restored historic home served as a homemade recording studio for Ray and his fellow musicians. With Ray's vocals at the forefront of the songs and a loose, almost live sounding recording, the album stands as a testament to a band at the height of their powers. The newly coined 'Pariah Dogs', consists of Jay Bellarose (drums), Jennifer Condos (bass), Patrick Warren (keyboard), Eric Heywood (guitar) and Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar).

Out of the Blue -- CD

Jeff Golub

1999 Atlantic Records

THE Jazz/Blues Guitar Prototype CD! August 25, 2001
By "2ncre8r"
Format:Audio CD

It was love at first listen. A dash of funk, a hint of rock and what may be the best effort yet at blending Jazz and Blues on an instrumental guitar CD. All of Jeff's cd's are good, but this is an all-timer here. It was THIS ONE that made me dash out to get the rest of his stuff. Relaxing, inspiring, technical, uplifting, very smooth, very tasty and simply put, one of the SWEETEST cd's I've ever heard, and I'm a hard to please S.O.B. Oh yeah - try putting this in the cd player at your next party and see how long it takes for people to start asking questions. NOT ONE PERSON I know has listened to this and not liked it - never experienced THAT before!!!

Track Listing
1. Wanna Funk?
2. Indiana Moon
3. Manteca
4. Velvet Touch, The
5. My Everything
6. Lucky Strike
7. Latitude 19
8. Come On Home
9. Paradise Lost
10. Groanin'

The City -- CD

Paul Brown

2005 GRP Records

The City opens up in with the funky and sensuous "Cosmic Monkey" featuring Jeffrey Osbourne's slinky overdubbed harmonies. "Hello Again" is Wes Montgomery-breezy soul samba. Next up is "Side Steppin'"s high-spirited blast of '80s-era disco jazz. "The City"'s dreamy blend of Boney James' soulful tenor saxophone, shivery keyboards, boogaloo congas, bluesy guitar and cognac-smooth jazz vocal follows.

"Las Vegas" is an exuberant congress of dancing guitar licks, Michael Paulo's throaty sax and a bouncing hip-hop swing beat. "Old Friends" is a quiet fire ballad caressed by Brown and James' tender interplay. "Winelight"'s blend of Brown's Grover Washington, Jr.-channeling solos and tasty club beats is complemented by the silky-smooth party starter "Jumpin' Uptown." "Food For the Moon"'s cool 'n funky hip-hop jazz groove flows into a faithful/playful voice box-juiced version of Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "Reel Mutha For Ya." Fittingly, the album closes with the sublime Brown/James chillout duet "The City (Instrumental)."

The City proves beyond a doubt that Paul Brown is one of the most exciting and important guitarists in contemporary jazz.

5. Vegas, Las
