Somethin' Else -- CD

Cannonball Adderley

1958/1999 Blue Note Records

The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of SOMETHIN' ELSE includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.

The track "Bangoon" is the correct title for the track "Allison's Uncle" that was originally included as a bonus on previous editions of SOMETHIN' ELSE.

Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder.

This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.

When alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, a high school band director from Florida, passed through New York with brother Nat during a school break, he found more excitement than he was counting on. After Julian offered to sit in for a late reedman, the session's leader, bassist Oscar Pettiford confronted him with the challenging changes of "I'll Remember April," at a breakneck tempo designed to humiliate the young upstart. Instead, Adderley responded with a solo that became the talk of the town; within days, his recording career had begun, and within a year he was able to give up his teaching job to front a full-time band.

Adderley gave up his own band in 1957 when he had the opportunity to become a sideman in Miles Davis' epic ensemble with John Coltrane, resulting in some of the greatest jazz recordings of all time (including MILESTONES and KIND OF BLUE). Davis returned the favor in March of 1958, appearing as a sideman on Adderley's all-star quintet date for Blue Note, and the resulting session is indeed SOMETHIN' ELSE.

Both horn players are at their peak of lyrical invention, crafting gorgeous, flowing blues lines on the title tune and "One For Daddy-O," as the Hank Jones/Sam Jones/Art Blakey rhythm team creates a taut, focused groove (pianist Hank Jones' sly, intuitive orchestrations are studies of harmonic understatement). Adderley's lush, romantic improvisation on "Dancing In The Dark" is worthy of Charlie Parker or Johnny Hodges, while the band refurbishes "Autumn Leaves" and "Love For Sale" into personal cliche-free swingers. And "Alison's Uncle" puts a boppish coda on SOMETHIN' ELSE, one of the most gloriously laid-back blowing sessions of the hard bop era.

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on March 9, 1958. Originally released on Blue Note (81595). Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather and Bob Blumenthal.

"Autumn Leaves" (Joseph Kosma) – 11:01
"Love for Sale" (Cole Porter) – 7:06
"Somethin' Else" (Miles Davis) – 8:15
"One for Daddy-O" (Nat Adderley, Sam Jones) – 8:26
"Dancing in the Dark" (Arthur Schwartz) – 4:07
"Bangoon"(initially released as "Alison's Uncle" and also noted as "Bangoon" on the RVG edition CD) (Hank Jones) – 5:05 not on original LP

Personnel: Julian "Cannonball" Adderley (alto saxophone); Miles Davis (trumpet); Hank Jones (piano); Sam Jones (bass); Art Blakey (drums).

To Bird With Love - Live at The Blue Note -- CD

Dizzy Gillespie

1992 Telarc Jazz

Dizzy live, what a treat ! December 23, 2009
By Jo More
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase

Mr Gillespie doesn't get any better than this. It's a live recording, without the studio manipulations, re-takes and all the other tricks a studio recording has to offer. However, that's exactly what makes this recording excellent. I could visualize the raport between the players, the energy of the band and the fun they were having.
The old master still had it. A must have CD for the Dizzy fans.

All compositions by Dizzy Gillespie except as indicated

"Billie's Bounce" (Charlie Parker) - 15:21
"Bebop" - 11:44

Black Diamond -- CD

The Rippingtons featuring Russ Freeman

1997 Windham Hill/Peak Records

The Best Rippingtons Album Yet November 16, 1998
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD

Jazz nowadays is a broad term encompassing anything from dissonant be-bop to easy listening background music. Like it or not, the Rippingtons play a form of jazz--and people enjoy it as such.

Critics may look down thier noses at this type of music and I don't know why. Perhaps it lacks the unstructured feel and spontaneity attributed to "traditional" jazz (whatever that may be) which they feel compelled to compare this to. This is quite unfair.

Notice that all Ripppingtons albums read "The Rippingtons featuring Russ Freeman." Russ Freeman, the leader and guitarist of the group, writes the songs and enlists the help of an outstanding group of musicians to play these songs. That's why the "official reviewer's" potshot that only one other original member remains on this album doesn't hold any weight. The Rippingtons were never so much about a band as they were about Russ Freeman and his song writing.

As such, let's judge this album on the merits of it's songs. Coherent structure, catchy hooks, nice phrasing, great instrumental licks, nicely produced... a fine product. Hey, up-tempo, hard jazz it's not, but then again it's not claiming to be.

This is a great, great Rippingtons album to kick back and relax to. Don't let anyone (ESPECIALLY snooty critics) dissuade you from enjoying this type of music, and specifically, BLACK DIAMOND!

"Black Diamond" - 4:46
"Deep Powder" - 6:16
"Seven Nights in Rome" - 5:05
"Soul Seeker" - 4:40
"In Another Life" - 5:41
"Big Sky" - 4:23
"If I Owned the World" - 3:39
"North Peak" - 4:12
"Angelfire" - 4:13
"Jewel Thieves" - 5:05
"Black Diamond (Acoustic Version)" - 4:09

Blue Moon Swamp -- CD

John Fogerty

1997 Warner Bros. Records

A wonderful, mature roots rock record December 29, 2004
By Docendo Discimus
Format:Audio CD

If you already own "Blue Moon Swamp", don't bother buying it again because of the bonus tracks (or whatever they are). The melodramatic 1960s teenage-rocker "Endless Sleep" and the instrumental "Just Pickin'" are good enough, sure, but they don't really add anything to an album which was just about perfect to begin with.

"Blue Moon Swamp", John Fogerty's first album in almost 11 years, is a warm, exquisitely produced and richly evocative roots rock record, blending R&B, rockabilly, country, blues, folk, and swampy rock n' roll on twelve vibrant and masterfully executed songs.
Deservedly winning a Grammy for best rock album, "Blue Moon Swamp" is tight but laid-back, not as hard-rocking as Creedence and not as pop-oriented as "Centerfield", but better and more mature than anything else that John Fogerty has created as a solo artist.
This remains one of my favorite records, one which continues to grow on me.

All tracks written and composed by John Fogerty, except where noted.

"Southern Streamline" – 3:56
"Hot Rod Heart" – 3:26
"Blueboy" – 4:04
"A Hundred and Ten in the Shade" – 4:19
"Rattlesnake Highway" – 4:17
"Bring It Down to Jelly Roll" – 2:37
"Walking in a Hurricane" – 3:41
"Swamp River Days" – 3:36
"Rambunctious Boy" – 3:51
"Joy of My Life" – 3:52
"Blue Moon Nights" – 2:33
"Bad Bad Boy" – 4:26

This review is from: Voodoo Lounge (Audio CD)

This album won Grammy Album of Year for the Best Rock Album in 1995. When this album was released back in 1994, I saw the first video from it on MTV or VH1 of the song "Love is Strong", and I loved it. After I began to hear more songs from the album on rock radio stations, I loved it more & more. So I bought a cassette and evenually a cd of this great album. I love it from beginning to the end. This album was a big release at the time, and the Rolling Stones even had a "Voodoo Lounge" Tour, promoting this album. Plus, it landed them on the cover of the "Rolling Stone" magazine.

Some of the highlights include: "Love is Strong", "You Got Me Rocking", "I go Wild", the bluesy "Out of Tears", "Blinded by Rainbows", and "Sparks will Fly".

I know everyone has their own individual taste in music, but I love this album, and I think it should be "re-visited", and given a 2nd chance. I sincerely believe this album, is definitely worthy of a 5 star rating. Thanks!!!

All songs by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

"Love Is Strong" - 3:46
"You Got Me Rocking" - 3:40
"Sparks Will Fly" - 3:15
"The Worst" - 2:25

"Moon Is Up" - 3:41
"Out of Tears" - 5:25

Ah Via Musicom -- CD

Eric Johnson

1990 Capitol Records

Perfect Execution of a great Guitar Style May 14, 2000
By William M. Rand
Format:Audio CD

Eric Johnson has a perfect knack at the guitar as everyone knows, and this is one of the most technically well done albums ever. I still prefer this CD to some of his more recent work like Venus Isle, simply because this CD is filled with more of the great classical rock style that I like. Of course "Cliffs of Dover" is a great song, but I even like some of the more country type stylings of "Desert Rose" and I don't even like country sound that much. Highly reccomended for anyone who loves to hear a perfect guitar player, this is as close as it gets. My only complaint is that he's almost too good, the technical proficiency almost seems to trade off a little with the emotions of the music, maybe its just me I find myself listening so closely to the guitar that I don't let myself get carried away by the overall sound. Overall though if you like great guitar rock this is a must have.

This review is from: Live at Carnegie Hall (Audio CD)

This is definitely one of the best live albums ever recorded, and a "must have" for any SRV fan. This was recorded on October 4, 1984, before Reese Wymans was added to the band. However, the legendary Dr.John from New Orleans played the keyboards. Plus, the legendary Texas Blues Singer, Angela Strehi (from Austin, TX) sings vocals on the song "C.O.D."

The Line-UP includes:

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Guitar & Vocals
Chris Layton - Drums
Tommy Shannon - Bass

Other Musicians:

Jimmie Vaughan - Guitar
Dr.John - Keyboards
George Rains - Drums
Angela Streli - Vocals on "C.O.D."

The Horn Section:
Bob Enos - Trumpet
Porky Cohen - Trombone
Rich Lataille - Alto Sax
Greg Piccolo - Tenor Sax
Doug James - Baritone Sax

The liner notes provide a photo of all these musicians involved in this "Classic", live performance album, plus a written essay describing the details of this concert. SRV had just turned 30 years old the day before this legendary concert, and in the notes, SRV is quoted as stating that after this concert: It was "My best birthday ever....forever" SRV 10/4/84. I highly recommed this one for any SRV and/or Blues Rock fan. Thanks and I hope this review has been helpful.

Making Movies -- CD

Dire Straits

1980 Warner Bros. Records

A Masterpiece February 7, 2003
By Brad Shorr
Format:Audio CD

This is not only my favorite Dire Straits recording, it is one of my favorite rock CD's of all time. Never has Mark Knopfler's guitar work been more passionate. Never have his lyrics been more poetic. Never have his vocals been more emotive. "Tunnel of Love" has an unforgettable melody, dreamlike lyrics, and a haunting guitar that add up to one of the greatest songs ever. "Romeo and Juliet" tells a heartbreaking story, told perfectly thanks to Knopfler's dead-on vocals. Not a weak song to be found in this masterpiece.

All songs written by Mark Knopfler, unless otherwise noted.

"Tunnel of Love" (Mark Knopfler, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II) – 8:11
"Romeo and Juliet" – 6:00
"Skateaway" – 6:40
"Expresso Love" – 5:12
"Hand in Hand" – 4:48
"Solid Rock" – 3:19
"Les Boys" – 4:07

A little bit of Mambo -- CD

Lou Bega

1999 RCA Records

Lou Bega should be cleared of all charges as a 1-hit wonder! February 4, 2000
By "thelightmemyselfandi"
Format:Audio CD

This CD doesn't deserve the rep it has gotten! The success (and ultimate downfall) of Mambo #5 shouldn't be used to judge Lou's talent. I love how he really doesn't have a great voice, but it's a great compliment to the mambo music. His voice is fun, no other word for it. You'll probably not even listen to Mambo #5 after you buy the CD, which is a good thing, because there are a couple of great songs. Let's get one thing outta the way first: yes, every song sounds alike, but hey, this is the year of teen pop, so who's to complain? The best songs on the album are: I Got a Girl (whih is like Mambo #5 in terms of lyrics, but it's way funner), Tricky Tricky (great video, by the way), Ice Cream (a little slower track, which works well in the middle of the CD), The Most Expensive Girl in the World, 1+1=2, and Beauty on the TV Screen. You can feel the vibe of the CD, and you start to think that "Lou doesn't care if he's being buttered by critics, he just wants to make us smile.....and tap our toes."

Track Listing
1. Mambo #5 (A Little Bit of...)
2. Baby Keep Smiling
3. Lou's Cafe

Diva -- CD

Annie Lennox

1992 Arista Records

Amazon.com essential recording

Although traces of her synthpop roots certainly showed through, Annie Lennox's solo debut, Diva, made it abundantly clear that her new material would veer away from gender-bending robotics of the early Eurythmics sound and continue toward the more emotionally grounded soul of later releases. On Diva, Lennox infuses each song with tenderly perceptive lyrics, hypnotic rhythms, and irresistibly soulful wailings. Her arrangements are clean and simple, utilizing bare instrumentation and sometimes-languid chord work. The singles "Walking on Broken Glass," "Little Bird," and "Why" became radio mainstays, while gems such as the Eastern-influenced dream ballad "Primitive," the hauntingly autobiographical pop-lament "Legend in My Living Room," and the cheerfully satirical "Keep Young and Beautiful" gave the album a plump maturity. --Sally Weinbach

Creedence Gold -- CD

Creedence Clearwater Revival

1991 Fantasy Records

Creedence Gold is a collection of Creedence Clearwater Revival's hit singles. Unfortunately, the album is a little too small to meet anybody's needs. A mere eight tracks are featured on Creedence Gold. Admittedly, these are eight tracks of amazing quality, but those looking for a more thorough collection will be pleased with the much more in-depth Chronicle, Vol. 1. Creedence Gold shows off the musical talent involved in the band. The 11-plus-minute "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" is a fine showcase for Creedence's lead guitar styling, while "Born on the Bayou" is a fine sampler of how the band worked as a unit. By no means is Creedence Gold a bad album. Indeed, the eight tracks featured are eight of the best moments in their respective genres.

Side 1

"Proud Mary"
"Down on the Corner"
"Bad Moon Rising"
"I Heard it Through the Grapevine" (Norman Whitfield, Barrett Strong)

Side 2

"The Midnight Special" (Traditional)
"Have You Ever Seen the Rain"
"Born on the Bayou"
"Susie Q" (Eleanor Broadwater, Dale Hawkins, Stanley Lewis)

The Electric B.B. King - His Best -- CD

B. B. King

1998 MCA Records

Although this collection has "Don't Answer the Door," "Paying the Cost to Be the Boss" and a nice live re-cut of "Sweet Sixteen" to highly recommend it, this 1968 issue is hardly King's best, and the "electric" part of the title makes it sound like there's an acoustic B.B. King album lurking around somewhere that you and I somehow missed in the last 40 years. To be sure, these are rock solid performances all recorded between 1965 to 1968, just as King's music was getting slicker and more urban. But this was one of the albums that helped introduce B.B. to a more modern audience (it's gone on to sell over a million copies in 30 years' time), heading straight to the timeline of "The Thrill Is Gone" putting him on the map worldwide. This 1998 CD reissue also includes three bonus tracks, studio versions of "Waitin' On You" and "Night Life," plus "Messy But Good" from the motion picture soundtrack For the Love of Ivy. Not his best, certainly electric, and ultimately, a good one to add to the collection after you've gotten about five or six others first. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.
