Silk Degrees -- CD

Boz Scaggs

1976/1990 Columbia Records

Boz Scaggs's 1976 breakthrough, SILK DEGREES, was not only his biggest-selling album, it was also one of his best. Here Scaggs collaborated with keyboardist and bandleader David Paich, who would soon form the hugely successful band Toto with this record's drummer, Jeff Porcaro. In Paich, Scaggs found a foil who added just enough pop gloss to make his blues- and R&B-tinged material palatable to the masses. Crucially, though, the pair keeps Scaggs's remarkable voice at the center of things, never going too far overboard with the studio polish. As a result, hit singles "Lowdown" and, particularly, the horn-spiked R&B of "Lido Shuffle" still sound fresh, while the ballads remain soulful. A year or so later, Rita Coolidge would take one of those ballads, "We're All Alone," into the Billboard Top Ten with her own version.

All tracks composed by Boz Scaggs and David Paich, except where indicated.

"What Can I Say" – 3:01
"Georgia" (Scaggs) – 3:57
"Jump Street" – 5:14
"What Do You Want the Girl to Do" (Allen Toussaint) – 3:53
"Harbor Lights" (Scaggs) – 5:58
"Lowdown" – 5:18
"It's Over" – 2:52
"Love Me Tomorrow" (Paich) – 3:17
"Lido Shuffle" – 3:44
"We're All Alone" (Scaggs) – 4:14

Boston -- CD

Boston

1976/1990 Epic Records

Amazon.com

"Better music through science" was the Epic Records-coined slogan that Boston leader Tom Scholz hated, but this masterwork of studio-happy, high-school-parking-lot music earned it. Scholz fine-tuned his overdubbed guitar orchestra to a pitch that a thousand subsequent album-rockers couldn't resist. And why should they? Where the band's later records were hardly worthy of note, Boston pulls together classic after classic: "More Than a Feeling," "Peace of Mind," "Hitch a Ride." The pseudo-cosmic ambience invites scoffs as the year 2000 recedes into the past, but it's really just part of the disc's charm. Let it take you home tonight. --Rickey Wright

The same as yours! Her new album "endlessly" is more pop, where "Rockferry" is a Jazzier album. I was hoping "Endlessly" would be more like her first, but I was let down.

I should give her new one another listen, but the first couple of times were disappointing. One of the songs was "catchy", but I can't even remember which one it was, so that should tell you something.

Let us know how you like "Rockferry".

I had a cassette that I'd always play in the car on that first warm day in Spring where you rolled the windows down and cranked the stereo, hard. Side One was the Doobie Bros' Greatest Hits, and Side Two was this one.

Good Collection of Mainstream Funk, October 6, 2005
By Pablo Parks "Pablo" (Bayonet Point, Florida) - See all my reviews

Almost every major name and contributor of funk is represented here with classic tracks spanning the early 70s to the mid 80s. Mainly all commercial funk. Favorites are the timeless "Movin" by Brass Construction", the jazz-funk "Dazz" from Brick, early Kool and the Gang "Hollywood Swinging", and possibly the best Funk song ever "Do It Till your Satisfied" by BT Express. Also many tracks more 70s pop-r&b-disco than funk like Cheryl Lynn, EW&F, The Whispers, and O'Bryan. Some rare stuff as well like Mass Production and Sun and some 80s funk represented as well from Cameo and George Clinton.

1. Atomic Dog - Clinton, George
2. Got to Be Real - Foster, D.
3. Boogie Wonderland - Lind, Jon
4. Give It to Me Baby - James, R.

This review is from: Rit's House (Audio CD)

"Rit's House" is a deep record with lots to chew on. Often one song will have more than one style or groove. "Mizrab" starts out with an exotic Mediterranean feel only to morph into a pure funk delight. Sampling from the original version by Hungarian guitarist, Gabor Szabo, is used, including Billy Cobhams's drum riff. As Rit plays his first notes in "13" - has there ever been a tone so understatedly cool? "78th & 3rd" scorches from beginning to end. SMOOTH JAZZ LOVERS BEWARE. "Rit's House" is aptly titled as this funky and breezy tune could be the "poster song" for contemporary West Coast jazz - a real foot-tapping, finger-clicking tune. The introverted "Just Listen" takes a step beyond the Bob James sound and I can hear Fourplay sighing now. "Olinda" is a brazilian flavored tune punctuated by Rit's funky octaves. "Party Time" could be part two to the theme to "The Odd Couple."

Has Rit made a statement as being possibly one of the best jazz players alive? I think he has.

I might add that the whole Verve catalog is quite impressive.

Track Listing

1. Module 105
2. "13"
3. Mizrab
4. 78th and 3rd
5. Rit's House
6. Little Dolphin Dreamin', A
7. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
8. Condor
9. Olinda
10. Night Owl
11. Party Time
12. Just Listen

Harlequin -- CD

Dave Grusin & Lee Ritenour

1990 GRP Records

You must have this in your collection, July 2, 2005
By o2miller (São Paulo, Brazil) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Harlequin (Audio CD)

I know that I have always wanted to have a bit of each type of music in my collection so that everyone that I ever had at my house could enjoy something. Not that I believe that it is possible to please everybody, but it IS possible to have music of every type so everyone can enjoy their visit.

This is one of those CDs that various times over the years (I have had it since it came out) someone said - Wow! I have never been able to find this... Since I live in Brazil, it is not easy to find here. And when it is played over Sunday Brunch, or any gathering of a few friends, someone wants to know what it is, and if they can have a copy.

It is the easy to listen to (not easy-listening) kind of jazz that no-one seems to hate. Before you know it, there are feet tapping and heads nodding to the beat. Even my hard-rocker friends like it, as well as the average Joe.

There is simply not a bad song on this, and even if you can't understand the Portuguese language which is sung on a few tracks, you can't mistake the passion that Ivan Lins transmits through Beyond the Storm, which is a personal favorite.

If you like SpyroGyra or the Rippingtons, or if you need a jazz record to please your guests for a wine and cheese party, this is for you!

Track Listing

1. Harlequin
2. Early Am Attitude
3. San Y Sidro
4. Before It's Too Late
5. Cats Of Rio
6. Grid Lock
7. Silent Message
8. Bird

Love Tattoo -- CD

Imelda May

2009 Verve Forecast

Fantastic, September 2, 2009
By J. Rodgers - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Love Tattoo (Audio CD)

A great American roots music offering. Her voice accompanied by jaw dropping guitar solos and a fierce thumping bass made me get up and buy it after hearing it while in a local book store. From the cover you would be forgiven to think that this was just another Rockabilly album, but that is not the case. Whats included here is a mixture of Rock, Blues,R'n'B, Jazz, R'n'R, Rockabilly etc with many tracks being more a fusion of these styles then of just one particular musical genre. It is this that makes it fresh and original and not just another retro 50's album.

1. "Johnny Got a Boom Boom" 2:59
2. "Feel Me" 2:57
3. "Knock 123" 5:27
4. "Wild About My Lovin'" 3:15
5. "Big Bad Handsome Man" 2:43
6. "Love Tattoo" 2:55
7. "Meet You At The Moon" 2:47
8. "Smokers' Song" 2:37
9. "Smotherin' Me" 2:42
10. "Falling In Love With You Again" 4:07
11. "It's Your Voodoo Working" 3:12
12. "Watcha Gonna Do" 3:42
