Back In Black -- CD

AC/DC

Rare 1980 ATCO Records

Amazon.com essential recording

Most critics complain Back in Black, the album AC/DC recorded after the death of their original lead screamer Bon Scott, is ridiculously juvenile, obvious, snickering, bludgeoning, derivative, single-minded about sex and booze, a big cartoon. All true, of course, and--on rock 'n' ragers like "What Do You Do For Money Honey," "You Shook Me All Night Long," and the title track--all great. As Scott's replacement Brian Johnson reminds us, loud and crunchy, no-holds-barred "rock and roll ain't noise pollution...it makes good, good sense." Never trust anyone who refuses to drink domestic beer, laugh at the Three Stooges, or crank Back in Black. --David Cantwell

All songs written by Angus Young, Malcolm Young and Brian Johnson.

Side one

"Hells Bells" – 5:10
"Shoot to Thrill" – 5:17
"What Do You Do for Money Honey" – 3:33
"Given the Dog a Bone"[23] – 3:30
"Let Me Put My Love into You" – 4:16

Side two

"Back in Black" – 4:14
"You Shook Me All Night Long" – 3:30
"Have a Drink on Me" – 3:57
"Shake a Leg" – 4:06
"Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" – 4:15

According to the official AC/DC website and most worldwide releases, track four is "Given the Dog a Bone". On some albums, particularly Australian releases, it is sometimes shown as either "Givin' the Dog a Bone" or "Giving the Dog a Bone".

This review is from: Wreck of the Day (Audio CD)

The latest in a line of moody, deep female vocalists, California native Anna Nalick claims the influences of Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, The Cranberries, Blind Melon, John Mayer and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Pretty heady stuff for a 21 year old, who got her big break by knowing the right people at the right time, and having a demo tape handy.

In my opinion, she sounds like a mixture of Alanis Morissette and Sara McLaughlin, with the youthful buzz of Avril Lavigne in ballad mode.

Slower and more introspective than current pop offerings, her eleven song debut album sounds like something from a much more seasoned performer, not unlike fellow youngsters Joss Stone and LeAnn Rimes.

Nalick wrote all the songs on the album, blending haunting melodies a la Ms. McLaughlin with spiritually uplifting lyrics. The best songs on the album are "Breathe (2 AM)" where she sounds very similar to Alanis Morissette; "Citadel" a song that would fit in on any Sara McLaughlin album; "Paper Bag" which as you might guess sounds like an Avril Lavigne ballad; "Satellite" my personal pick; and the very Cranberries track "In My Head"; but they're all pretty good.

A young talent with a bright future.

Amanda Richards, July 21, 2005

"Breathe (2 AM)" – 4:39
"Citadel" – 2:46
"Paper Bag" – 3:27

"Forever Love (Digame)" – 3:19

Backroads -- CD

Ricky Van Shelton

1991 Columbia Records

When he's not trying to be Roy Orbison (as he did on 1990's RVS 3), it's easy to see that Van Shelton's a fine singer. And this is a fine record -- so fine it's tempting to hunt for signs of listener manipulation. But Van Shelton balances the self-pity of songs like "After the Lights Go Out" with the uptempo punch of stuff like "Call Me Up." So even though Van Shelton recycles "Rockin' Years," the duet from Dolly Parton's Eagle When She Flies, just call it good taste, sit back, and enjoy. ~ Brian Mansfield

Track Listing
1. I Am a Simple Man
2. Rockin' Years
3. Oh Heart of Mine
4. Some Things Are Better Left Alone
5. After the Lights Go Out

At Last -- CD

Cyndi Lauper

2003 Epic/Daylight Records
Amazon.com

The girl who just wanted to have fun has matured into a sensitive interpreter of eclectic standards. Taking a cue from Rod Stewart Cyndi Lauper applies her formidable pipes to an eclectic collection of covers that range from a few Edith Piaf tunes ("La Vie En Rose" and "Hymn to Love") to classics from the songbooks of Bacharach/David, Etta James, and Smokey Robinson. Although there are some upbeat tracks such as the remarkably authentic Specials-styled ska of a radically reworked "Sunny Side of the Street," a rather forced but fun duet with Tony Bennett on "Makin’ Whoopee," and the cha-cha, Ricky Ricardo-ized version of Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs' "Stay," the album predominantly floats in a sober, pensive mood. Piano and subtle orchestrations add tension to sensitive readings of "Unchained Melody," "Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood," and an eerily somber "Walk on By." The effect is haunting and intimate as Lauper unleashes her inner Tori Amos. Shifting "You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me" into an aching ballad, the singer shows her remarkable vocal range and interpretive ability. Lauper's voice sparkles throughout, especially without the overproduction that has marred some of her previous efforts. As its title infers, At Last finally shows her true colors. --Hal Horowitz

"At Last" (Mack Gordon, Harry Warren) – 2:42
"Walk on By" (Burt Bacharach, Hal David) – 4:32
"Stay" (Maurice Williams) – 3:13
"La Vie en Rose" (Mack David, Louis Guglielmi, Édith Piaf) – 3:34
"Unchained Melody" (Alex North, Hy Zaret) – 4:27
"If You Go Away" (Jacques Brel, Rod McKuen) – 4:28
"Until You Come Back to Me" (Morris Broadnax, Clarence Paul, Stevie Wonder) – 4:39
"My Baby Just Cares for Me" (Walter Donaldson, Gus Kahn) – 2:37
"Makin' Whoopee" (Donaldson, Kahn) – 4:13 (duet with Tony Bennett)
"Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" (Bennie Benjamin, Gloria Caldwell, Sol Marcus) – 3:38
"You've Really Got a Hold on Me" (Smokey Robinson) – 4:03
"Hymn to Love" (Marguerite Monnot, Eddie Constantine) – 3:33

The Foundation -- CD

Zac Brown Band

2008 Atlantic Records

5.0 out of 5 stars ~laid back attitude~, November 25, 2008
By Joey Sciarra (Connecticut) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Foundation (Audio CD)

Although they aren't "cookie cutter" typical radio-ready country, the Zac Brown Band suddenly have found themselves with a #1 smash country hit, "Chicken Fried", a catchy tune with great harmony and fiddle playing. Surprisingly, their album is a nice mix of a variety of music that is really hard to describe. Think half island/reggae country similar to Kenny Chesney's - and half bluegrass country similar to Union Station. Soothing, relaxing, and just great to pop in and chill out...chicken fried comfort music for the soul!

I hope ZBB continues to put out more of this awesome music...very pure and not over-produced at all! It's rare for the modern country music industry to accept non-mainstream music, and it's so nice to see some variety for a change...so I hope this trend continues and they get more national recognition. They are a very talented band, and i love their simple acoustic style...awesome stuff!!!

On a shuffle

Right now Beatles " You Won't See Me". My god the memories Rubber Soul. 8th grade waiting for the release, getting a copy on release day, Greg Walkers attic, hearing it for the first time, and listening over and over again, each moment better than the next.

I miss those days of discovery.

Peace To The Neighborhood -- CD

Pops Staples

1992 Pointblank/Charisma Records

The septuagenarian Pop Staples puts a lot of younger performers to shame with his integrity-laden solo release Peace to the Neighbourhood. The founder of The Staples Singers combines joyous soul and gospel with swampy funk and blues. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have the rest of The Staples, and admirers Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, and Ry Cooder along for the ride. Includes the street-wise, anti-drug-culture "Miss Cocaine." ~ Roch Parisien

Track Listing
1. World in Motion
2. Love Is a Precious Thing
3. America
4. Down in Mississippi
5. This May Be the Last Time
6. Peace to the Neighborhood

Good music and the excitement of new discovery is still readily available. I guess I'm fortunate to have a very knowledgeable used music dealer who lives 4 blocks from me, so I often experience the Joy of discovery.

Heck, if you hang around this thread a little more, some of that discovery may return!

Enjoy the music my friend and remember what "Duke" said.... "It is sounds good, it is good"!!! :banana-guitar:

Got a shuffle of about 80 Vince Gill songs going.

I think Vince is one of the most talented and versatile, if not the most, in Nashville today. Plus he knows how to surround himself with great talent.

And he has a hot wife. :happy-smileygiantred:

EDIT: my fav Tell Me One More Time About Jesus is playing beautiful .

Side note, I have been at the big house for about 24 hours and only had the TV on for a total of 30 minutes on and off.

For the last couple years I differed to the eye candy the bright lights of HDTV at the expense of music listening.

Not anymore the way it sounds here.
