I Can See Your House From Here -- CD

An outstanding meeting of brilliant minds!, November 7, 2002

Pat and Sco! 'Nuff said. I have to admit that this one threw me off balance initially. They don't play necessarily in the matter that you might expect them to. They cover a wide range of material that incorporates the best of their capabilities. Steve Swallow and the venerable Bill Stewart round out this quartet. Mr. Stewart is essential to the drive factor in this recording. This quartet SWINGS! They groove. The ballads are also good. When you have to such good guitarists you don't much more than a quartet. They fill up the spaces nicely. They play off each other wonderfully. The chops are impressive but this isn't a chops-fest. There is substance as well as virtuosity here. I was thrilled with this recording when I bought and it has grown on me over the years. A sequel recording would be nice.

"I Can See Your House From Here" (Scofield) – 7:43
"The Red One" (Metheny) – 4:17
"No Matter What" (Scofield) – 7:14
"Everybody's Party" (Scofield) – 6:15
"Message To My Friend" (Metheny) – 6:09
"No Way Jose" (Scofield) – 7:18
"Say The Brother's Name" (Metheny) – 7:18
"S.C.O." (Metheny) – 4:41
"Quiet Rising" (Metheny) – 5:26
"One Way To Be" (Scofield) – 5:45
"You Speak My Language" (Scofield) – 6:57

This review is from: Telepathy (Audio CD)

Bill Stewart is one of the best drummers around--working with Joe Lovano, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, etc. This CD received accolades when it came out and top marks in every Jazz Guide I've ever seen and yet it's out-of-print! Do what you can to put your hands on this one. The quintet is terrific. Stewart receives particularly strong accompaniment from pianist Bill Carrothers on this CD. Bill Stewart has played on several Bill Carrothers projects and they've played to rave reviews in Europe. You can check out the CDs "Ghost Ships," "A Band in All Hope," and "Duets" (available on Amazon--the rest you can search for on the net under Bill Carrothers)

Like Minds -- CD

Burton, Corea, Metheny, Haynes, Holland

1998 Concord Jazz

Amazon.com

Vibist Gary Burton has been collaborating with pianist Chick Corea and guitarist Pat Metheny since the mid-'70s, and it shows. The three have a strong intuitive sense of each other's lines and sound and can enhance the music in myriad, subtle ways. Having a great rhythm section doesn't hurt either, and bassist Dave Holland and drummer Roy Haynes are two of the very best. On Like Minds they have created an excellent CD: a no-frills, straight-ahead jazz album, crisply recorded, full of energy and imagination. With the exception of the George Gershwin piece, "Soon," the disc features all original compositions, with considerable thought given to distinguishing each soloist despite the surface similarity of their nimble, bouncy styles. Like minds, perhaps, but each possesses a singular voice and the ability to merge it creatively with others. --Wally Shoup

"Question and Answer" (Metheny) – 6:24
"Elucidation" (Metheny) – 5:21
"Windows" (Corea) – 6:17
"Futures" (Corea) – 10:41
"Like Minds" (Burton) – 5:50
"Country Roads" (Burton) – 6:26
"Tears of Rain" (Metheny) – 6:33
"Soon" (Gershwin) – 6:24
"For a Thousand Years" (Metheny) – 5:23
"Straight Up and Down" (Corea) – 9:02

Reunion -- CD

Gary Burton - Pat Metheny - Mitch Forman - Will Lee - Peter Erskine

1989 GRP Records

Reunion is a 1989 album by Gary Burton, reuniting him with guitarist Pat Metheny for their first recordings in almost 13 years. Both have been called prodigies; Burton when he joined George Shearing's group in 1963 at age 19. Burton met the 18-year old Metheny at the Wichita Jazz Festival in 1973, when Metheny was 18 years old. After welcoming him as a teaching colleague at the Berklee College of music, he hired the guitarist into the newly-expanded Gary Burton Quintet in 1974.

Metheny left Burton's group in 1977 to form his own quartet with Lyle Mays. The two had virtually no contact with each other until, in early 1988, the organizers of the Montreal Jazz Festival contacted Burton. They told him that Metheny was the festival host, and invited Burton to join him onstage. "My apprehension was immediately erased when I saw how easy it was for us to play together, even after 12 years," said Burton. This led to their collaboration on Reunion.

Cry Like A Rainstorm Howl Like The Wind -- CD

Linda Ronstadt Featuring Aaron Neville

1989 Elektra Records

Amazon.com essential recording

An album that defines virtually everything that is right about adult contemporary pop--and yes, there are a few things--Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind contains lush, orchestrated arrangements of songs by first-rate tunesmiths such as Jimmy Webb, Eric Kaz, Paul Carrack, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill, Isaac Hayes, and Karla Bonoff. Four cuts, including the Grammy-winning "Don't Know Much," feature duets between Ronstadt (still singing with power and assurance even at the top of her range) and angel-voiced Aaron Neville. Other highlights include "Adios," with multitracked background vocals by Brian Wilson, and the title song, which is driven to new heights by the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra and the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir. Beautiful stuff. --Daniel Durchholz

Straight Shooter -- CD

Bad Company

(No Date) Swan Song

Supergroup hits its stride, November 7, 2001
By Mons "Mons" (Norrpan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Straight Shooter (Audio CD)

Released in 1974, Straightshooter is regarded by many as being Bad Company's strongest album. It has the bluesy feel of its predecessor (Bad Co) but has the band turning their amps up 11 and rocking out the strongest set of songs of the band's career. Do not forget that Bad Co was a supergroup with 2 guys out of Free (Rodgers and Kirke), the bass player from King Crimson (Boz Burrell) and Mott the Hoople's guitarist (Mick Ralphs). They should have been huge, of course, but suffered from having to play second fiddle to Swan Song stablemates Led Zeppelin. The songs were great, their sound: a sort of supercharged, sexy blues-rock without the pretention of Led Zep. What let them down perhaps was their lyrics, some of which make Spinal Tap look like Leonard Cohen, but if you can take that - and I can - this album is a great listen from beginning to end. Bad Company were also one of the few hard rock bands that wrote great ballads (Anna), though it was Straightshooter's high-octane rockers like Good Lovin' Gone Bad, Feel Like Making Love and Shooting Star that helped secure them a place in rock history. Bad Company were a good, tight band, but I would recommend anyone to listen to them purely to hear Paul Rodgers' masterful rock vocals. New to Bad Company? Get this one first, and then Bad Co.

Side one

1. "Good Lovin' Gone Bad" (Mick Ralphs) – 3:35
2. "Feel Like Makin' Love" (Paul Rodgers/Mick Ralphs) – 5:12
3. "Weep No More" (Simon Kirke) – 3:59
4. "Shooting Star" (Paul Rodgers) – 6:16

Side two

1. "Deal With the Preacher" (Paul Rodgers/Mick Ralphs) – 5:01
2. "Wild Fire Woman" (Paul Rodgers/Mick Ralphs) – 4:32
3. "Anna" (Simon Kirke) – 3:41 [1]
4. "Call on Me" (Paul Rodgers) – 6:03

Luck Of The Draw -- CD

Bonnie Raitt

1991 Capitol Records

Amazon.com

As its title makes clear, the 1991 sequel to Bonnie Raitt's platinum breakthrough on Nick Of Time takes nothing for granted. Raitt had achieved sobriety, renewed commercial focus, and then the payday that the prior album yielded, but Luck Of The Draw mirrors an even fiercer determination to make music as if her life depended on it. Again teamed with producer Don Was, Raitt surpasses herself with her best album to date: her wonderfully lush, blues-rimmed voice and sinuous slide guitar wrap themselves around a dozen potent songs culled from a typically shrewd mix of writers including Paul Brady, John Hiatt, Bonnie Hayes, Shirley Eikhard, and Billy Vera, and Raitt herself turns in her most generous batch of originals yet. Sympathetic guests include Brady and Delbert McClinton on harmony vocals, Richard Thompson on guitar, and Heartbreaker Benmont Tench on organ, in a program including the sassy "Something to Talk About," the sultry "Slow Ride," a soaring "Not the Only One," and the heartbreaking "I Can't Make You Love Me." This isn't luck, it's artistry. --Sam Sutherland
