Flying Colors CD

Grant Geissman

1991 Blue Moon

What surely sets Grant Geissman apart from other acoustic guitar soloists in contemporary jazzdom is his impeccably mellifluous composing skills and his desire to stretch himself into more challenging sub genres. While never straying too far from his trademark David Benoit like peppiness, Flying Colors—which represents the guitarist's commercial peak on early smooth jazz radio-displays mouth-watering flamenco and brassy Latin tinges. A musically logical follow up to the similarly vibrant Take Another Look, Geissman's playing is enhanced by the positive support of keyboardists Gordon Goodwin and Emil Palame and saxophonist Sam Riney. Of special note (and the best cut) is Geissman's ode to his youth, "Places I've Been," which features Byrd-like riffs, Beatle-esque sitar and orchestrated, "Eleanor Rigby" touches.

Brazilian Romance -- CD

1987 Columbia Records

Sassy's Farewell
January 30, 2000
By Edward L. Hicks
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase

This Sergio Mendes-produced release from 1987 was the last complete studio effort from the greatest female jazz/pop singer of the 20th Century (apologies to Ella). It is also a beautifully sung and orchestrated compilation of latin-influenced jazz, in the vein of Jobim, Getz, Gilberto, etc. A must for any fan of the genre, or anyone who wishes to get acquainted with the incredible vocal range of the magnificant Miss V. All ten cuts are special, but listen to "Wanting More" and the closer, "Your Smile" to get chills up your spine. Sassy, you are sorely missed, and there is no one who will ever match your talent, range, and heart.

"Make This City Ours Tonight" (Tracy Mann, Milton Nascimento) - 2:57
"Romance" (Danilo Caymmi, Mann, Paulo César Pinheiro) - 3:30
"Love and Passion" (Mann, Nascimento) - 3:58
"So Many Stars" (Marilyn Bergman, Alan Bergman, Sérgio Mendes) - 4:07
"Photograph" (Caymmi, Mann, Pinheiro) - 2:31

Embraceable You - Live -- CD

Sarah Vaughan

1996 LaserLight Digital

Great value

This review is from: Embraceable You (Audio CD)

This is a great cd. Laserlight has a knack for bringing otherwise obscure live recordings to light. The sound is very good. Highlights include What Now My Love, and Lover Man , a very endearing encore during which Sassy croons "Turn the lights down low....." and, not being able to get them to turn the house lights down, begins to put in a few little 'sassy' quips about the situation all in a very lighthearted and endearing manner of course! Bob James supports her on piano along with Herb Mickman on bass, and Omar Clay on drums....A very enjoyable live recording by one of the greatest vocalists of all time.

1. Embraceable You
2. Scat Blues
3. Lover Come Back To Me
4. Round Midnight
5. Sassy's Blues
6. Misty
7. Just One Of Those Things
8. Alfie

Q's Jook Joint-- CD

Quincy Jones' best album.

This is one of the great "concept" discs, based on the juke joints that served as makeshift nightclubs dotted across the landscape in the south in decades long gone by.
With a stellar cast of musicians as his instruments, Quincy literally creates the atmosphere of his own juke joint in track 1 and then runs with a gorgeous, beat filled hour non-stop after that.
The sound quality is fabulous - let it roll over you with the lights low and it will transport you to another time and with its energy and rhythms I've purchased two copies of this CD for myself, given two as gifts and, of course, have it on my iPod. Everyone I've turned on to this album has thanked me.

Highest recommendation. Its just great.

Peace To The Neighborhood -- CD

Pops Staples

1992 Pointblank/Charisma Records

The septuagenarian Pop Staples puts a lot of younger performers to shame with his integrity-laden solo release Peace to the Neighbourhood. The founder of The Staples Singers combines joyous soul and gospel with swampy funk and blues. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have the rest of The Staples, and admirers Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, and Ry Cooder along for the ride. Hot Hard Groove, May 20, 2003
By A. Leiber "margret_l" - See all my reviews

This review is from: Hard Groove (Audio CD)

Yes, I fell in love with "Hard Groove". It is the best attempt of a Jazz musician ever to fuse Jazz with Hip-Hop, Soul & R&B - and time for it to appear after years of disappointing efforts (sorry, Branford Marsalis, Don Byron). "Hard Groove" lightfootedly manages to bridge the gap in a firework display of Hardbop and Funk elements, with reference to the soundtracks of Blaxploitation films and to Hip-Hop, with wonderful Soul and R&B ballads, perfectly timed and elegantly arranged.
The rappers Common and Q-Tip, Erykah Badu and D'Angelo as well as internationally acclaimed Jazz musicians Meshell Ndegeocello, Pino Palladino, Cornell Dupree and Steve Coleman make the CD a strong statement of cooperation. In addition, "Hard Groove" gives room to Hargrove as a brilliant, extremely versatile soloist and as a remarkable composer. Roy, that CD is almost perfect and a gift. Love to you!

New York Stories - Volume One -- CD

Danny Gatton - Roy Hargrove - Joshua Redman and more...

1992 Blue Note Records

Danny Gatton shows his jazz side, September 15, 2005
By Scott Hedegard "Scott" (Fayetteville, AR USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: New York Stories (Audio CD)

Already legendary for his country and rock and roll guitar mastery, the late Danny Gatton also released a pure jazz CD on Blue Note, "New York Stories." If there was any doubt that this incredible musician was capable of any style, any time, any place, this CD will put those doubts to rest and we will continue to mourn and lament the passing of one of the greatest guitarists in history. His suicide was provoked according to some theories by his poor record sales, and what a shame.
"New York Stories" is actually a jazz combo effort with Gatton writing all or part of the tunes and sharing his time with a stellar piano and horn section. This is a jam session, and according to the liner notes, a limited amount of rehearsal was allowed to keep the tunes fresh and to allow the improvisational juices to flow.
It's smooth - so much so you almost want to take up smoking and don a fedora while you listen. It harkens back to the smoky dangerous days of the '40's and '50's, where down and dirty jazz emanated from grimy clubs in the bad parts of town. Yet at times the music is ethereal, such as the guitar tour de force "One For Lenny" that closes the CD.
The style here is reminiscent of Miles Davis' early years, ala "Walking" and "Someday My Prince Will Come" and perhaps a little Brubeck piano and sax tradeoffs.
Even rockers will appreciate the mastery on this session. "New York Stories" goes down like a cool drink on a hot summer afternoon, welcome as a surprise snowfall in July would be.

Possibilities -- CD

2005 Hear Music

Snobbery seems to be the only reason not to love this disc, September 24, 2005
By M. Emrich "embo55" (Denver, Co.) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Possibilities (Audio CD)

The reviewers that do not like for the most part are true jazz purists. They have an indignance about this that reminds me of Bob Dylan being booed the first time he pulled out his electric guitar at a folk festival in the mid 60's. Come on this is great stuff. One of the best songs John Mayer has ever recorded is the discs opener "Stitched Up". The keyboards are killer. This song is a turn it up real loud and drive down the coast highway on a sunny day kinda song. At least it was until gas started climbing to 5 bucks a gallon. Don't turn that cd player down yet. The next song has Carlos Santana and Angelique Kidjo joining Herbie. If you don't move to this song, you're dead. the disc's biggest surprise is the third cut with Christina Aguilera singing Leon Russel's classic "Song For You". OK, here's my snobbery showing but who would have thought she had those pipes. Been a long time since I'd heard a "Song For You" and I love Herbie's arrangement. Paul Simon's colloboration is surprisingly the discs weakest collaboration. The disc has two other standout tracks. Annie Lennox is the only artist that I know of where everything she's done for the last quarter century has been a constent improvement over her earlier work. "Hush, Hush, Hush" is a great little Annie Lennox fix until her follow up to "Bare". "When Love Comes to Town" teams up Jonny Lang and Joss Stone for a bluesy rendition of the U2 song. It is my second favorite song to John Mayer's. They could do the entire grammy show with this cast of performers. Hell, maybe they will.

"Stitched Up" (featuring John Mayer) (Herbie Hancock, John Mayer) – 5:27
"Safiatou" (featuring Santana and Angélique Kidjo) (Harold Alexander) – 5:25
"A Song for You" (featuring Christina Aguilera) (Leon Russell) – 7:05
"I Do It for Your Love" (featuring Paul Simon) (Paul Simon) – 5:58
"Hush, Hush, Hush" (featuring Annie Lennox) (Paula Cole) – 4:46
"Sister Moon" (featuring Sting) (Sting) – 6:54
"When Love Comes to Town" (featuring Jonny Lang and Joss Stone) (Adam Clayton, David Evans, Larry Mullen, Jr., Paul Hewson) – 8:41
"Don't Explain" (featuring Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan) (Arthur Herzog Jr., Billie Holiday) – 4:53
"I Just Called to Say I Love You" (featuring Raul Midón) (Stevie Wonder) – 5:27
"Gelo na Montanha"* 1 (featuring Trey Anastasio) (Cyro Baptista, Herbie Hancock, Trey Anastasio) – 3:48

Feels So Good -- CD

By Glenn "Glenn98" (Bergenfield, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Feels So Good (Audio CD)

The Grammy winning title cut "Feels so Good" is what turned me on to Chuck Mangione's music. But this CD goes much further than that. ALL of the recordings here are excellent. And they are arranged alternating the fast and slow pieces in a pleasing way. "Maui Waui" and "Last Dance" are nice and relaxing. "Theme from Side Street" is short but meaningful. "Hide and Seek" is a catchy piece that will have you tapping to it. And "The XIth Commandment" is a brilliant end to this great CD.

This is by far Chuck's best recording. If you're in a qundary about which Chuck Mangione CD to buy, THIS IS THE ONE!

Feels So Good - 9:42
Maui-Waui - 10:13
Theme From 'Side Street' - 2:05
Hide & Seek (Ready Or Not Here I Come) - 6:25
Last Dance - 10:54
The XIth Commandment - 6:36

Chris Vadala: soprano, alto, and baritone saxes; piccolo, flute, and alto flute

Amazing Grace -- 2 CD Box Set

Aretha Franklin

1972/1990 Atlantic Records

Amazon.com essential recording

Originally released as a double LP in 1972, Amazing Grace cracked the Billboard Top Ten upon its release, making it one of the bestselling gospel records of all time. Grace was recorded in a large Baptist church with an ultraenthusiastic, loving audience in the pews and a full, funky, band as well as the Southern California Community Choir under the direction of her mentor Rev. James Cleveland. Her voice is melismatic and intensely emotional, yet pure and controlled--as if she were directly channeling the Holy Ghost. Aretha's father, the brilliant preacher Rev. C.L. Franklin, makes a brief, proud appearance, remarking how "she has never left the church!" Highlights include the beautiful "Wholy Holy," an 11-minute, heart-stopping "Amazing Grace," and Inez Andrews's stirring song "Mary, Don't You Weep." Way more than a return-to-the-roots record, the set is an inspired gospel-soul workout that arguably showcases Aretha's strongest singing ever. --Mike McGonigal

Stars & Guitars - Live -- CD

Willie Nelson & Friends

2002 Lost Highway Records

Amazon.com

An A-list of musically diverse acolytes surrounds the venerable country icon on this concert recording, which pays richer dividends than its studio-album predecessor, The Great Divide. Artists from Sheryl Crow to Norah Jones and Vince Gill to Keith Richards help celebrate one of the richest legacies in American music. Though some hit-and-miss is inevitable, the teaming with Richards, Ryan Adams, and Hank Williams III on "Dead Flowers" romps all over the Rolling Stones' original, while the duet with mentor Ray Price, who enjoyed an early hit with Nelson's "Night Life," shows a sense of history too often missing from such demographic-driven projects. Other highlights include the sweet-voiced balladry of Jones on "Lonestar" and a luminous rendition of "Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain" by Gill. As for the misfires: Adams and Nelson sound like they're in different keys on Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come"; Toby Keith isn't even a poor man's Waylon Jennings on "Good Hearted Woman"; and the very idea of Matchbox Twenty singing "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" is ludicrous. Even when the material and guest vocalists don't mesh, Nelson's guitar punctuation remains an understated (and underrated) delight. --Don McLeese
